I just started a 4year computing degree - I have no current plans to upgrade my athlon 3200, 2GB ram, nvidia 6600GT, 3.5" 7200 sata drives machine: It runs really fast if software is up to scratch. i.e not vista ;-) However the sound of the thing - in a rumbling old sonata mk1 - is going to drive me crazy if I'm sitting at it 4 horus a night. Prime concerns: CPU - heatsink is junk, panaflo fan could be alright if I could run it at 7v, currently no chance as the thermal resistance of the heatsink is woeful. GPU heatisnk/fan combo is total trash, really whiny fan, loads of air moving. silentpcreview.com doesn't have much to recommend for Socket-A heatsinks and the market for them has probably vanished. I need suggestions for this, happy with second hand options, or diy ideas, it just has to work. I would also consider undervolting underclocking the geforce if it would make a fair bit of difference along with a new heatisnk/fan combo, wowever I wouldn't want to lose more than 15% processing power - I'll be working with OpenGL and DirectX, and I also have a penchat for compiz on gnome desktops. I will gladly pursue any worthy suggestions, budget isn't too small and I'm willing to mod till high heaven. I just don't have the time to do the hours and hours of research that i've done before, homework is calling.
