I'm sure anyone who lives in Ayr or by the coast can easily relate when I say that these things are the most obnoxious birds in the country.

For the past few summers, some of them decided that our roof, and other roofs on the street, where the perfect place to raise a family. Unfortunately, even though they aren't stupid compared to most animals, they fail to realise that the roofs are inaccessible to your average passer by on the street, and attack everyone who walks past.

However, today the **** was well and truly taken.

While sitting in my room studying for my resits, I heard the gulls screaming bloody murder, followed by my dog barking. I looked out the window to see my spaniel terrorising a baby bird that must have landed in the garden while learning to fly, with the parents and other gulls trying to dive at the dog. I "escorted" the chick out of the garden with a broom, all the while dodging the attacking adults. Now, they have congregated in a large posse outside the house, being even more aggressive than usual, while the stupid chick is just walking about the street in front, giving them no reason to leave.

There is now a zone surrounding my house within which everyone gets followed and attacked. When I am at home, I feel like I am under house arrest.

And I can't do anything about it, because they are a protected species.

    rant over

My Father in Law tried that years ago, a hit resulted in a reaction from the other birds that reminded him of a certain horror film involving our feathered friends.

Yep, cunning beasts, aren't they? Hopefully the chick who's life I saved will remember me, despite its parents and their friends probably wanting me dead.

They are why I hardly wash my car anymore. I spent 2 hours one day getting it washed in the morning, that was interior as well and polishing and stuff last summer.

1 hour later my neighbours decided to feed the ****ing things, I came out later on and found both my dads car and mine utterly caked in bird ****e.

Ended up just taking both the cars to the drive through cleaner that day because of how bad it was.

Well I'm fairly sure your interior was still okay, unless the 'gulls got inside and sat down with a newspaper and took a dump on your seat.

Bear in mind polishing is a good thing because it makes it easier to wash the car later and also protects the paint somewhat, so it's hardly wasted time.

Though you do want to get rid of seagull poop pretty quickly, I understand it damages the lacquer on your paint as the lacquer shape can be distorted by the stuff, so you do want to make a point of trying to clean it the same day.

Cant understand why they are protected as they are a nuisance and their numbers are massive! They are a pest.

humans cause the mess that attracts the gulls in the first place.
the gulls are scavangers, so if us humans didn't give them the food source then they wouldn't be there.

because they've learned that humans are the source of the food, be it the idiots that throw food down for them, or the idiots that leave litter all over the place.

they are intelligent animals, they know where to hang out to get food.

I still think a reduction in numbers is needed of both species! lol
