Would be good to bash out more ideas for theme nights just now.

I'd have loved to do one for Portal 2 on launch night since there's a co-op mode but I'll be at a Multiplay event that weekend. Meh, indeed.

But speaking of co-op, I wondered if a co-op night would be good fun? Taking votes on the best games for this - I know it was pretty good on the COD night doing the Zombie scenarios in groups of 4, so could be good for two or three games over an evening.

Sajuuk Khar asked about an EVE night - certainly could be done if enough people wanted it (really needs to be at least 6 I'd say) but I was just concerned that style of game being an MMO type rather than instanced would maybe mean people would already have their own groups to play with anyway.

A retro night was the only other idea I had just now but trying to run 10 year old games on new hardware isn't always smooth.

We may repeat the circle and be back to another RTS night soon..

The eve night was more of a joke than anything, one of the issues that would arrise is alliances. Naniki informed me that if we ever met in the game he'd be obligated to kill me which means a lot more on eve than it does in say cod.

The idea of a portal theme night would be awesome and i'd be more than happy to wait for a coop night whenever it's available.

eve does not make a good theme night atall you cant acheve any sort of point for it to be worth while and in eve there is no private servers or anything suited to the type of theme night you want to do.

i like a portal theme night start to finish first for a race the chalange levels of portal one then you still have whatever portal two adds.

just a note no mmos make a good theme night.

Alien Swarm as a possible co-op game to play? Free, 4-player campaign action by the glorious valve themselves :>

    Also L4D / L4D2 ?

    No?

You could always tap someone who still has ten year old tech to go with the ten year old games. I've got one machine from that era and should be able to knock up a second. :)

Only thing is, Windows 98 networking performance is almost non-existant

Coop - Killing floor? (There seems to be a zombie theme running through the co-ops, how about leaving it for halloween)

We could always split FPS into seperate vanilla, cartoon and mod nights.

Yeh, some of us (myself included) have access to some older hardware and spare disks, so it wouldn't be impossible to get a bunch of 98 / XP machines together.

At a previous LAN I actually cobbled / re-used 4 systems to run XP just so that we could have a Bomberman tournament on the central tables - it was quite a lot of work just to get one game to work though !

I'm not ruling out the retro game idea yet, but it will take a bit of prep to see what can work and what doesn't.

A lot of co-op games do have a monster / zombie theme but there's no reason why they can't be played at another point in the year. Like puppies at Christmas, zombie games are not just for Halloween :)

Killing Floor and Alien Swarm look good.

    Theme Night suggestions.

    1. Movie Night (Games based on Movies or TV series)
    2. Publisher Nights ( Games from only one publisher)
    3. Sports Night/Day( 2012 round the corner)
    4. 18+ Night (18 rated games ONLY!!!)
    5. Chart Night 2007 (Games from the top ten chart of any given year)
    6. Lucky Dip Night ( Games in a hat, we all get one dip)
    7. Sequal Night ( One game only, but play all the games in its series)
    8. Board game Night ( Turn based games eg.Monopoly)

I will try and think of some more ideas as well:)

    +1 for Killing Floor.
And, for a co-op night, perhaps the 4-player Magicka :D

    Some ideas...

    WoW- do instances together maybe

css night- many mods so lots of modes

minecraft night- get a server going and try and survive against the evils ?

retro- as mentioned before, pacman, space invaders( falldown isnt really retro but worth a go) although would be single player games mostly so probably not.

total war night- Napoleon, Rome, medieval etc.

Probably gonna get some hate for this but a xbox 360 night with just some random games ?

    Few good ideas,

What about old school FPS night. Would need to see if they worked on Windows 7 but COD, MOHAA, and UT2k4 would be my shout.

I'd like to add my two cents.
Starcraft 2 is a good game, but I think it'll be a bit too serious to play at a LAN and the price is a bit steep. Anybody who gets it for the LAN and hasn't really played it much will probably get hopelessy outclassed by anyone who has any real experience with it.
As it happens, our previous two posters are in Silver League.

    Agreement with Wulf.

Starcrafts a fun game to play if you play it with someone at your own level as the multiplayer takes care of. Lan play would be rape.

I see what your talking about in terms of the price and that's why I asked how many people already owned it. I was just a suggestion anyway but tbh I can't see the skill range being beyond the extent it was with Dawn of war in previous LAN's

    Anyone into R.U.S.E. ?

I've got 5 copies of this loaded up on the Kustom systems now so we could do a partly 'turn up and play' event and have a few people over for BYOC if that was of interest.

An FPS night is probably the other obvious one just now - Killing Floor I'd looked at already and has been said a couple of times below, so that would go in. I've got a COD4 Paintball mod bookmarked that I've been meaning to try out, that could be potentially fun. Maybe bring back a round of Tremulous for the 3rd FPS game?
