Vista booting slow

Hi all,

slight problem with my vista 64 bit. Since Monday the boot up from switching the computer on has gone from about 40 secs or so to about 3-4 minutes. Then it takes another 5 mins or so for the system to be stable i.e. taking ages for programmes to open etc. If i leave it for 15 mins then the computer is working fine.

Yesterday I googled the problem and ran chkdsk, memtest86, ran vista repair, checked for viruses and spyware, defrag etc. All fine. And all that appears to have sorted out the slow running of the computer once vista has loaded but it's the actual boot time thats still the same.

I even tried to run system restore to the point that vista was booting fine but all i keep getting an error message of
"(cyclic redundancy check) 0x80070017"
I've googled that error but that appears to come about when in installing an OS.

So, i haven't got alot on the computer only World of Warcraft and vista was a fresh install about 2 months ago. Only change i made was adding a new graphics card and monitor 2 weeks ago. Uninstalled the previous graphic drivers and installed the new one etc and things seem to be going ok up till now.

After work i'm going to uninstall the graphic driver and reinstall and see if that works. Anything else i've missed? apart from the suggestion my m8 said "Unistall vista and run xp". I like vista . Many thanks for your time in reading this.

I say this a lot around here, but whatever: Run the manufacturer's diagnostics for your hard drive.

CRC basically means windows was having trouble reading from the media (typically the hard drive or optical drive), and that error coupled with slower HDD performance (which proceeds hard drive failure) might be indications of a dodgy drive.

Better safe than sorry!

Also, check the drivers for your controllers. I was getting very long boot times with an external drive attached to my Jmicron controller until I realised that the drivers Windows had installed were not suitable. Installing the correct ones fixed the problem.

Thanks Latency...you was right and halfway through the repair the HD died...lol. Oh well....nothing major lost and got a new drive in now and it's running great. I'll know next time if the boot up becomes slow.
Thanks for your suggestion too Fat Jez but never got around to checking that but again i'll make a note of that too

You're welcome, but I'd have been inclined to go with Latency's suggestion first
