outputting file/folder list to a file

HEy ppl.

I have a hard drive that has my complete music collection on in digital format.

PRoblem now though is That I want to create a database of it all so I know what albums I have and what songs are on them.

Now to my question. Can you let me know how to output the file structure to a text file?

windows: dir > list.txt

unix: ls > list.txt

ls -r for recursive.

Powerdesk will let you copy the names of all the files in a directory and let you paste them into Notepad.

A lot of PC mags have the freeware version as well.

Yeah but that will only do the top level.

I want the subfolders and the files in the subfolders.

someone on another forum suggested dir /s

Problem is I want the output so I can then import it to a database.

FOrmat I want is

Artist , album , track

which is the way the drive is laid out.

I`ll check out cygwin

Why not check out something like collectorz.com (CD Collector) or one of the free ones out there.

Thing is I`ve already got all the cds on my pc and it took over 3 days so i`m loathe to go through it all again.

Once I can get the file list pulled from the drive I can manipulate it just how I want

The scan the HDD for .mp3 files and produce a list of them. You dont have to import them all again from CD.

I`ve tried tree and whilst it does output the whole structure I was hoping it to be in the format

Folder > Sub-folder > File
Folder > Sub-folder > File
Folder > Sub-folder > File

With tree I get

Folder
sub folder
file
file

I`ll keep playing about with it and see how I go
