New processer instability

Hi everyone, up until now I was running a Athlon 2000 with no problems. I got hold of a second hand XP3000+ and decided to whack it straight in as it uses the same socket and my cooler (Zalman 7000) is supposed to be fine for it.

Now, however, the system is unstable and resets itself if I do anything intensive with it. Motherboard Monitor and Speedfan report temperatures of either about 33 or 77! When its on 77 it doesn't move about at all so I don't know if there's a glitch on my (cheap) motherboard, and there's no in between those temps - weird I know!

I'm guessing my system's running too hot, but I tried turning up the speed of the Zalman cooler, and installing an intake fan, and the system still reset itself. I'm stuck and frustrated, can anyone help me out please?

You checked if the system is picking up the CPU properly. I remember a friend of mine done an upgrade VERY similar to what you have done. Try resetting the BIOS and a BIOS update

I've already reset the bios settings and fiddled with the fsb settings - it tried to pick it up as a 2200+ until i changed it to 166mhz. I can't find a bios update for my board either. Is it probable that its a motherboard problem then? Thanks for quick reply.

Is your heatsink seated properly? That could cause instability and high temps. If I were you I would try re-seating the HSF and putting a new helping of thermal paste on there too.

OK cheers for the suggestions. I've now tried taking off the heatsink and reapplying the thermal paste. I've also looked for a new bios - I found one hacked bios for overclocking (called cheepobios) and a slight fix for my bios. However the flashing program doesn't seem to work with either of the new bioses and I've tried 3 different versions of the program. The minor fix is nothing to do with processors anyway.

I'm pretty sure that the processor's absolutely fine, because I used the PC it was in for a day to do video editing and there were no problems. At the moment I'm just running it as a 2200 and it goes fine.

I think I've sorted MBM to a degree - when its running as 2200 it gets up to about 35 under load, and when its a 3000 it gets up to about 38 before crashing. Both hover about 30 when its idle.

What should I be looking into now? This is getting frustrating, having a faster cheap basically going at the same speed as my old one!

Does your RAM support the FSB that you are trying to run? It sounds like the processor isn't too hot so maybe it isn't the CPU?

I think it does - I've got DDR333 2700 ram. This is a link to what the Crucial System Scanner says (I think it will work on anyone's machine):

http://www.crucial.com/uk/systemscan...926C3&tabid=CR

Note I've got the FSB running at 133 here because its stable, but when I turn it up to 166 this is where it gets unstable. Cheers.

if its a fake 3000 then that would be why it can't do 166, there have been alot of them although mostly 3200.
google for fake 3200 u are looking for info re what bridges are cut I think the fsb is determined by the L12 bridge but don't quote me on that
Fake ones have been modded so u would need a magnifying glass to check if the bridges are really cut or just made to look that way

Well like I said it was in a PC before mine running as a 3000, so I doubt it is a fake! Said PC was in a industrial environment, so it was originally bought from a reputable source.

At the moment from what suggestions I've had I'm tending towards getting a new motherboard. I also want to be able to change the IRQ of devices, which mine won't let me do. Does anyone think this is a good/bad idea, or have any suggestions as to what motherboard to replace mine with?
