128mb or 256mb graphics

Hi guys

i got talking to a guy in a shop this weekend about graphics cards. I wanted to know how much benefit I would get by spending more cash to get a 256mb card. I was looking at the 6800 and the 6800gt.
He suggested that you dont get a massive benefit by getting a 256mb card over a 128mb one, and that i would get more benefit by looking at the cards processor itself. i.e. ignore the memory capacity and focus on the cards with the better processor.
Is this the case? I've been hunting for a decent card for gaming and was coming to the conclusion that I would have to buy a £300 ish card with 256mb (i.e. 6800gt or ati x800xt). Of course i'm always interested in saving a little money if this isnt necessary!!

Any advice would be great!
I'm a big UT2004 player and would like to 'up-the-anty'

Cheers

The 6800gt 256mb is much better than the 6800 128mb.

Although it kinda depends what resolution and detail you want to play at.

6800gt vs x800xt I would go with the xt, xt is more 6800ultra comparison card, x800pro would be about same as 6800gt.

With 6800 level cards, the extra ram will make an apreciable difference. 256Mb 9200's and such like, are a waste of memory. The core is never going to need that much ram.
But when the core is as good as the 6800 ones are, then the extra ram can be utilised

I would have thought that the 256MB cards more for 'future proofing' (I hate that phrase) at the moment. As more games begin to take advantage of the extra memory the difference will become more pronounced (sp?).

But as I say, just a thought...
