OK, am currently trying to assemble a shopping list so I can build a silent Linux router/firewall for my home network. So far have only decided on the new Via Epia CL6000 motherboard:
http://www.viavpsd.com/product/epia_cl_spec.jsp?motherboardId=181 with 128MB of RAM, and that's about it so far.

In order to maintain the silence I'm looking for I'm considering using a compact flash IDE adaptor in order to bypass the need for a hard drive, and hence remove all moving parts from the design. I'll probably be running Smoothwall; http://www.smoothwall.org/ which doesn't need more than about 30MB to run.

So large amounts of storage won't be required. However I would prefer to have some extra storage. How easy would it be to slience a hard drive within a system this small (am going to create a custom case, and it won't be larger than the 17cm x 17cm footprint of the motherboard)?

Any suggestions? Especially welcome if they'll reduce the cost.

Don't know how much cash you have, but for something like this, a 1Gig IBM MicroDrive would be ideal - same size as a compact flash card and makes newxt to no noise - easy to dampen in the case

Is a possibility, but would ideally like to use a standard laptop hard drive if it could be made totally silent.

If KustomPCs don't sell it then I'm sure that they won't mind me mentioning www.ultim8pc.co.uk as a possible source

Why not get a barracuda 4 and put it in the silent drive?

Have decided a custom built case is going to take too long, and there isn't space for a hard drive enclosure in the one I'm planing on.

Although bear in mind a compact flash card was not designed to be written to as often as as a hard drive so you may wear it out very quickly.
