Could everybody please offer their condolences for the recent death of my 1986 Renault 5 GTL 1.4. The head gasket blew on Friday and the man at the gargage says it's not worth fixing for the wear the extra compression would put on the engine block
:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
Anybody want it for parts?

suzuki jimny 03 , black no girl bits just raw.
a good dealer can get you one for 7k cash NEW , 3yr warranty and a 2nd hand one 3 yrs old retails 4.5 - 6k dep on spec.
only 4 seats though and like driving a shed on a skateboard at 80 plus.let down the seats and its a mini load lugger , best in the wet with 4x4 engaged.
If you dont like thrills , playing with the steering wheel constant or bumpy rides then stay clear.
Previous car escort 16v saloon black , drove like a barge , rolled more than the jeep.
Favourite car I ever owned was the rover 214 k series , man when new those cars really shifted , it was like a go kart. However they dented in the rain , specially on the door panels when parked next to people carriers.

I also own an Escort which is older than me:D (1972) but thats in so many pieces at the moment i don't think it really counts...then theres my...
Mk1 Escort Mexico (pile of parts and a logbook...no shell at the moment)
Mk2 Escort Harrier (pile of parts and a logbook...no shell after the previous owners 'restoration' attempts:rolleyes:, freebie for doing some work on a Mini)
Capri 2.8i (in need of a headgasket or two and a little resto)
Mk2 Fiesta XR2 spec van (needs an engine and two new wings)
And...
1980-summat Honda MTX125 with an MTX200 engine (want to get this fixed for next summer, needs an engine rebiuld)
...i think i should spend less time fixing other peoples cars and concentrate on my own a bit more...
:D
Mk1 Escort Mexico (pile of parts and a logbook...no shell at the moment)
Had one of those years ago (about 20 actually). Yellow with Black stripe. Spent a fortune in time and money on it, BDA cam, bilstiens, wolfy alloys, recaros then totalled it playing at rallying:(

Looks like a lot of effort going into that Jon:) After writing mine off I went into 4x4, landrovers are made of strong stuff (and easier to repair and mod). Not as fast but still hellish good fun. Spent a fortune again in time and money, spent 4 years competing with local club, Pennine, and also NORC and AWDC. Had to pack it in when the second jnr came along, no more money or time (not if I wanted to stay married):)

Automatic 5 speed 'INVECS-II' Transmission (it's the Mitubishi version of a 'Tiptronic'-style gearbox... which includes a handy semi-automatic mode)
Performance: 0-62mph = 6.4secs, and a (theoretical) top speed of 152mph. I ain't tellin' ye's what I've had it up to (just in case Forthy reads this :D), but it's still seriously quick... even when fully loaded wi' all my fishin' gear :p
BTW: The rear windows of my estate are quite heavily tinted... which can also prove very useful... :p

Sorry mate I don't, I've been out of the scene for a while now. It's worth trying a google for some of the regional Land Rover Clubs though, there's usually a webbie and maybe even a forum. Where abouts are you? I'll dig my ARC list out and have a look in your area. Forward Control stuff mught be a bit hard to come by though:(
I emailed the guys at the forward controll register they said they'd let me know if anything turned up.
Here's a list of ARC clubs as well as the FC register, might be worth a few more emails?

no claims bonusiesss  is for that driver only, not the car. your dad has the bonus on the car not you and you can not swap his bonus on to your insurance. also you will not get any bonus because you are not the main driver on the insurance. when you come to have your own insurance when it becomes cheaper for you, you will have no no claims even if you had no accidents because you have not had any insurance in your name before.
the easiest way to get a no claims bonus is just to have an "off the road" policy on a restoration project.

Everyday (company) car is an astra 1.7 dti which looks ok, handles ok, goes ok, but at night....
VW Golf V6 4motion. 2800cc's, six cylinders and four drive wheels worth of tarmac chomping goodness, shoehorned into a (relatively) small frame - makes for some dropped jaws away from the lights (and other places! like motorways!!)
Only had it 6 months but it still blows me away when I drive it. Good thing about it is that unless you know what to look for, to the untrained eye it's easy to mistake it for a standard Golf.
It's also got the now standard factory bloo dash!! (musta known it was for a modder!!)
I'll get some pics posted later.

If your secure in your sexuality you shouldnt give a txxs (no pun) , and those that respond with childish smirks are the ones that should be getting out and getting a life(9.99 and free delivery)
Should of forked out the extra for the Type R pal...
Why? and lose my license after 3 months? :)
I test drove one, yes it's fast, too fast for me i think.
Speed isn't everythin thats enjoyable at motoring, the jeep was great fun to drive, i just finally got fed up guessing which way i would be facing after braking hard in the wet.
Agreed the civic doesn't exactly set the world on fire, but i guess the reliability and safety factors are a plus. The Missus loves it and it does have enough power to get you outta trouble if required.
The gay car icon thing was a feeble attempt on my part at humour, it was just coincidence i changed my car at the same time as that episode aired, although that makes no difference to me m8's :D Appologies if upset any one.

those k series engines are great , but they do need some attention other than some handyman or non rover garage.
I still weep fro the first gen ones that were in me old motor the 90 rover 214 si (originally a 2 door only engine variant), now that was like a go kart.I was un/lucky enough to have one of the first ones where the just manually did the panels different from the 4dr version.
The zr's are more like the race day cars so they ultimately need the race car mechanics in tow , not the idiots that dont get them serviced.
Mate of mine's got a 114 GTi Rover Metro. God it flew with that K-Series engine. Nut-case is driving a 1.6 205 GTi now. Eek...
Anyway, I drive a slightly tatty, yet very reliable G-Reg (Mk3) Ford Fiesta 1.4 Ghia!

Ingram's the local VW d(st)ealer. It's in Ayr but they have a branch in Paisley as well, if thats closer to you.
No car dealer is any use really, you just have to dig in and get the best that you can from them. At the end of the day they are out to make money and you (or your mum) are fair game, unfortunately!
If money is no object however, get an R32 limited edition. Production run has now ended, but there are still a few brand spanking models in the 'system'. Get your now before it's too late!

I've had the car nearly 2 years none, and I'm looking to replace her early next year. I've done loads of mods to her. Far too many to list..............here's a pic of what she looked like when I brought her.

...an Audi A4 Turbo on 18" split rims, lowered sports suspension, sports exhaust, full body kit and M3 style mirrors plus the engine's been chipped from 150bhp to 210bhp. The crack in the front spoiler has since been repaired
Inside it's all nice leather and aluminium with lovelly climate control.
Have owned it from new about 6 years ago and it's still done under 20k.

Thanx. Love your mk4 V6 4motions :D , with the exception of the R32, that's the nicest mk4 they do.
Well I'm kind of looking for something a little more sporty and a bit more modern.
If I can stomach the massive insurance bill I'd really like either a Mazda RX-7 (3rd gen, 280bhp, twin turbos, Type R) or a Toyota Supra (mk2, EZ, 326bhp, twin turbo). I'm looking to repalce the Golf early next year, so I'll know soon enough if I can afford either car.

Very nice. You can't tempt us with the thought of that car running 18" rims and not showing use. More pics please.

Grrrrrr
Want one
I could import one for about 10 grand all in but it's only the 24 valve 3 litre without turbo.
Anything else is mucho expensive.
Well I don't own a car as such (or at all as it happens) but i get to drive my brother's Escort 1.8 GTI and used to drive my mums BMW 325i til she sold it. Both are (were) company cars.
I wont be driving my brother's car for long now since he is about to be banned for 6 months for speeding. And my mum has now got a Volvo C70 which the insurance company told her to p**s off when she asked if i could be insured on it.

Now that's what I call a nice car :D :D

Heh heh .... I guessed that you might be a fan, given your sig :D
It is great fun ... but it's a handful in this weather. Any sign of moisture/ice on the road and you have to be a bit careful with that much power and rear wheel drive. I've gone fishtailing off down the road on a number of occasions ... calling for a rapid change of pants :p :p
I just turned 25 a week ago, so the insurance was for me aged 24. I pay about £780 fully comp with 5 years NCB. But it seems that alot of that is based on postcode (Ascot area). I used to own a 315bhp Nissan Pulsar GTIR before the Supe which was about £950 to insure. I got a quote on a R33 VSPEC Skyline and that was £1500 ontop of the GTIR to insure = nearly £2500   . Given that the Skyline is 2.6 Twin Turbo and 4WD, I thought the Supra would be a killer at 3.0 Twin Turbo and RWD .... but it seems not
Cheers, THM
p.s. More pics on my website here Bouncing Bullet (http://www.bouncingbullet.com/) - Just go to the 'Galleries' section
U bet I'm a fan.
Must say your Supra is looking rather sweet.
I'm about to turn 24 in March and I'm thinking either RX-7 (280bhp version) or a Supra, as I have the money in my bank to get either. However I've only got 2 years NCB. So they will sting my ar$e 4 insurance, TBH it's probably won't happen, but I can dream.
TBH, even my fwd Golf can b a pain when it's icey. I still remember the time when I was driving up a hill @ about 5mph cos it was icey and the local postman walked out in front of me. Never thought my Golf would ever go sideways :D
TheHoodedMan
17-12-2003, 23:02
Ahhhhh! The RX7 was also on my list ... I was just put off a bit by the fact that there are very few places that specialise in rotary engine maintenance and tuning. Plus the Toyota's have legendary build quality!
Well worth getting a quote for insurance if you are 24 though! There are plenty of members on the owners club (www.mkivsupra.net) that are around 21!
Cheers, THM :D
Noooo. Don't point me at a Supra Owners club website. Now I'll be sat here all evening looking at the lovely fast cars :D :D
I'm still at the "not sure which" stage so I could go either way. I live in Reading in Berkshire and we have Rotechnics (sp) just down the road who are a rotary engine specalist, so they would make life very easy if I did get a RX-7, just not sure about having to import one
TheHoodedMan

Check out some of Bens' cars here www.linney.org. That's where my Supe came from, but he always has some great RX7's around. Do you ever go to any of the Jap car meets? Your best bet would be to turn up to one of those (althogh the season is pretty much over) and there will be plenty of people who will take you for a spin down the road in each car.
There is a meet in Reading quite often, but that is mainly for the GTI-R guys (another great car ;) ). Check out JapUKMeets here http://www.japmobiles.com/japukmeets/default.asp for details of any upcoming meets! NOT to be confused with a bunch of idiot kids in Novas and Saxos being stupid. The JapUKMeets are sensible 'get togethers' with the odd trip down a nearby dual carriageway every now and again. But mainly it's just a load of people getting together with a mutual appreciation for fast Jap cars :D :D
Cheers, THM
Cheers for the link to the importers site. I'm pretty sure I'd seen it before, but thanks anyway.
I do know that in Reading about once a month there is a large(ish) Jap meet near Reading FC's stadium just off the M4. A friend of mine went in his mk2 MR2, and said it was really nice. The police turned up and just walked around chatting to people and asking them about their cars. Nice to c the police turn up and spend time talking to people and not just raising funds by fining people 4 having tiny no. plates, or nosiy zorts.
However my m8 did say the Nova boys pitched up and started making themselves unwanted, but they did kept to another car park @ least.
Cheers

Ahhhh - Let us not forget the mighty Nissan Pulsar GTI-R (what I had before the Supra :D ) which wipes the floor with most cars to 60. 4WD, 2.0, Turbo, Rally-bred hatch! Blisteringly quick. I was running 315bhp and 4.7 0-60, but there are some out there pushing the 500bhp barrier. For around £5k, you can't get a better power car for the money IMO. They're certainley amazing little things, Pulsar GTI-Rs. Ben, who writes for Redline has got from, which he had imported. Totally immaculate.
There's a chap who lives up the road from me that imports Jap cars - wouldn't take much for me to get hold of one ... I think I'd need to find 5k first though!
They are nice. Still, I'd rather have the Uno with what I've got planned for the one I'll be getting. Muhahahahaha.
Cosworth-powered cars rule over all though.

It doesn't let go easily, there's a fantastic level of grip even in wet weather. I had a good shot of them at Knockhill racing circuit and there's no doubt that they handle well. Gonna take a little bit of getting used to compared to FWD though !
Clearly the marketing speil hasn't worked in some areas - my dear Craig, if I wanted a hairdresser car, I would buy a Ford StreetKa ;) The TF doesn't look at all 'hairdresser' to me.

the typical hairdressers car was the triumph spitfire or the mg midget.. these days i would say renault clio or citroen saxo's....
the biggest problem i have with mg these days is the rover connection...... british cars are crap compared to the japanese equivalents. now what would have been cooler is one of the rare xr fords, either the xr6 or xr8.... (google them if you think i am talking balls)

Haha, very good ;) My hair is naturally curled though, so don't need tongs ! And I , for the record, have absolutely no interest in styling hair for other people.
Anyway...
Last night was so much fun, drove about for ages, and that car is such a buzz on back roads. The engine sound when you take it past 4000rpm is fantastic and the amount of grip is just incredible. I'm well pleased with my toy, although I've already had someone shout 'Posers' when me and my mate were taking a run around in Ayr town centre ;) Tsk, sounds like words of jealousy IMO.

Do you mean the TF is a poorly designed/built car or do you object to 25s, 45s and 75s being badged as MGs? Shared resources is an absolute must these days, and badging is little more than identifying with a certain sector of the market. Without Rover, MG would no longer exist or it would succumb to the fate of brands like the Mini and be snapped up by an overseas manufacturer. I like the Mini (inpractical for my job) but struggle with the idea that a brand so British is now German.
Do you mean the TF is a poorly designed/built car or do you object to 25s, 45s and 75s being badged as MGs?
Did you know that the TF chassis is 2 rover metro chassis bolted back to back? If you look under the rear sub-frame, there is still the metro engine mounts in place
Without Rover, MG would no longer exist
Well ... initally, this is correct, but the MG badge saved Rover. Rover brought in some hi-class designer / engineer (I cant remember who now, somebody like a Lotus developer or something) to re-face their Rover brand as the new MG brand. MG sales did so well, that it just about kept Rover a-float, and investors happy enough to let them keep making cars ;)
Also, FYI, I believe that Rover are still not making any profit, but are just about breaking even

I didn't know that, but the handling of the car does not suggest much spirit of 'Metro' is retained (unless you count those amazing 6R4s, those were COOL Metros). No kidding, this car really does corner like it's on rails and is no squidgy shopping trolley ;)

I think it might have been Peter Stevens that was responsible for MG's 'latest' revival. As far as I can tell, breaking even is pretty good terms for them considering Rover used to be kept going mostly through government grants ! One way or another, it's progress and long may it continue - it keeps a lot of people in our own country in work if nothing else :)

So whats your point? The Golf, Beetle, Audi A3 (or is it A4? I forget), Skoda Fabia, VW Bora and I believe, Audi TT all share the same chassis.
Skoda? Audi TT??
OK, well as you pointed out, the Golf, Beetle, Audi A3/4, Fabia, Bora and TT all share the same chassis and are all fairly good (and damn good) cars, for both handling and drivability (althought the Beetle was far too 'power assisted' for my liking), and were all produced around the same time.
The MGF / MGTF chassis is TWO metro chassis bolted back to back. The Metros was renowned for nothing (other than low fuel consumption, and high rust-ability) and was made a good ten years before the MGF. IMHO, MG did well with the TF...
The point was made out of interest, over anything else.
What's your issue with Skoda? I take it you have never driven one then?
HTH :P
Metros.. fantastic cars if you're called Diedre and are off out shopping for fish. I had one.. two in fact when I was a young un. Had plans to mod them to look like a 6R4. Didn't happen. Would still love one though!
Fair point about the metro though.. not sure how the more recent Metros (alright, Rover 100s!) compare with the old ones but I dare say they've brought them up to date a little.. still, seems a little bizarre..two chassis welded together? Whats that about?
No, never driven a Skoda. I suppose since they've joined VAG, they're probably a similar drive to a Golf or something, considering they share plenty of parts.

Just to clarify (I built a kit car that was basically MGF in layout, but years before the mGF hit the scene)
The MGF uses two Metro front subframes, but modified to accept anti-roll bars and the like. It's not strictly speaking fair to say Metro "chassis" - for starters, neither has a chassis as such, as they are monocoque designs - the body shell is the "bit in the middle", and the subframes are just metal frames to hang the suspension off and the engine in.
The TF has dropped the hydragas suspension of the Metro in favour of conventional springs/shocks and this is undoubtedly what has improved the handling - I know, a member of my rally team is responsible for some of the design and construction of various parts of the TF suspension and braking system.

i first started to hate the british car manufacturers when there was the bl/triumph/rover/honda partnership. the triumph acclaim was a standard car, but the same model badged honda prelude came with all the triumph options as standard.
Mini's stopped being minis when the new shape one was announced. The older ones were a much better car imo. before you all scream about not driving the new one... i have, my bro has a british racing green cooper s. sure it is quick, but it lacks character and style. issigonis design was the best one ever. I have owned loads of minis, in fact, still own one, a 1972 998cc clubman. all modern cars these days just dont have any real individuality, my toyota avensis included. I also like to be able to fix it if it breaks, but with all the electronics on a modern car you need the right software, leads and a lappy to find out whats wrong.
the old mg midget, the mini, the hilman imp, the tr6, rover p series were great cars, and simple... even tuning my old aston martin db5 was easy, right down to syncing the carbs by ear.... sometimes, progress isnt really progress is it.....all them sensors to go wrong, and still the same sort of output power from the engine... I also remember dremeling mini heads to get more gasflow... cant really play that game either on new cars... (as a sideline, to improve gasflow on a ford 1600 pinto head, you add metal, not grind it out!)
never mind eh....
I'll stick to my old grunty real steel cars, the waynes can have the tinfoil cars of today....
I didn't know that, but the handling of the car does not suggest much spirit of 'Metro' is retained (unless you count those amazing 6R4s, those were COOL Metros).

Now THAT is the sound of a REAL car :D  :)
I drive a mk4 Golf GTi 1.8T. The only thing I have done to it is to add 17inch Wolfrace five spoke alloys which imo make the whole car look much better than standard.
I have a couple of things planned for it...
Lower the suspension, probably just by springs at the mo as cheaper and the shocks seem ok standard.
Get a Forge Recirculating valve - similar to dump valve but no swooshy sounds and keeps the turbo spinning for better power delivery when changing gears - may get sturt brace for the front as a friend has just done to his Seat Ibiza Cupra and has made noticeabl difference and last but not least - a REVO engine remapp - I had the free 5 hour trial and turned the car into a beast up from 150bhp to around the 200bhp mark - loved it.
Then I'll probably sell it all and get a nice motorbike

Smudge, if you fancy a golf GTI, you're better off getting the 1.8T GTI rather than the 2.0.
Lots of reasons, but first and foremost the 1.8 turbo is highly tuneable (to more than the 204bhp my V6 4motion kicks out) and is a 16 valve engine, whereas the 2.0 is an older 8 valve lump. And it's quite slow - not really an appropriate car to be badged 'GTI'.
So there you have it - 1.8 good, 2.0 bad.
:)

I, sir, resent that comment on the grounds that my Golf V6 4motion would quite easily whip the a$$ off a clio 180 sport. (see page 5)

Till it met a tree, then it stopped working. Insurance is surprisingly cheap (well it was for us) on puntos too. Especially on the 55 as that iirc is the smallest engine.

For my brother and myself at 17 to be insured fully comp it was peanuts. I can't remember the exact amount but i think it came to under a grand.

ROFL
I stand corrected; clearly I was talking lobblocks as usual ;)
To be honest I completely forgot about the 4Motion - find a twisty, greasy, wet and bumpy road and yes, the Clio would make hard work of it - I'm sure the 4Motion would take it in it's stride. I have to disagree with the statement "1.8T GTi's are very quick" though :) - maybe drop the "very" and I'd believe you - unfortunately as modern cars get slower and slower, the accuracy of such statements starts to fade into obscurity...!
They don't make 'em like they used to and all that ;) :D

"I have to disagree with the statement "1.8T GTi's are very quick" though "
Actually you're probably right there. What I should have said was that the 1.8T GTI's can be made to be very quick, ie with chip upgrades etc. being that they have turbochargers in them.
So I kinda stand corrected also. :)
You're right about your last statement though - they definately don't make them like they used to!

It replaces a 16 year old Nissan Micra 1.0 litre so I suppose anything would seem amazing in comparison!
The Punto is great value, you get 6 speakers + sub in the boot just as standard (with Blaupunkt head unit).
I share the car with the missus so I would like to get myself a really decent car sometime - I'll wait until the novelty of having a car that is so much better than my old one wears out.

Just bought myself a Ford Focus Edge. I pick it up on Tuesday. Not the worlds most exciting car but my job means that from the 15th Oct I will be doing 200+ miles a day plus and my 1.2 Punto wasnt up to motorway traffic it could reach 70 maybe 75 at a push but if you wanted to overtake you had to wait till you were going downhill and hoped the other bloke didnt have the same idea.
I was probably silly to buy new as there is a new model coming out in Jan but there are some very good deals on the new cars, £2000 off , 3 years servicing / breakdown cover. I basically needed a car that would start first time everytime and be under warranty while I pound close to 50,000 miles a year on the beggar.

Was it an 8v Punto? I know my new one isn't a sports car, but it goes well over 70 (if you know what I mean) without a fight. Mind you the 16v model does have an extra 20bhp I suppose.
Whoever owned my car before only got 32 mpg on the trip computer, it's gone up to 42 mpg in 4 weeks so I dread to think how it was driven before!

Well Apache, if you want isurance to be low, but performance high, you'll have to compromise. I've only driven 5 or 6 different cars, but most of them have been cheaper cars.
I would highly recommend a Nissan Micra 1.0 Litre 16v (not the brand new one - the bubble car shaped one), but make sure it's a 16v. Some people say they're a bit girly but most people who have driven one (myself included) say they really fly.
The insurance is as cheap as you'll find and you'll be hard pushed to find the performance and insurance combo.
You might also want to look at Seats, which are well known for being decent performers with cheap insurance.
Good luck mate! :D

Well, its dry and sunny here this afternoon, although its still cold, I'm off out for a quick blat up to Tyndrum. Might as well take advantage of the break in the weather whilst you can.
Plus, she's been standing for a week and a half now, dont want the battery to drop off in charge, I haven't got an optimiser sorted out yet.

Was looking around this forum, thought I'd join in.
Currently in this, but probably going up for sale soon. Had it for about 2 months now:

I see that you have used Murkett's Blow Dog. I will agree Simon Murkett & the rest of his staff do now a thing or 2 about customer service, and have been in the trade for as long as I can remember (when they ran the Vauxhall dealership & petrol station in the town centre before Sainsbury's bought the land). down to earth people and very genuine.

Yup, good dealers are always easy to remember - there are so few of them.
Graypaul Ferrari are probably up there as the best I've ever experienced.

44 tonne artic at work, Multipla to the shops, MTB for fun. Used to have a Honda until I got my leg broken. No born-again biking for me, too many other idiots out there
Favourite piece of kit: Volvo FH12 460 Globetrotter with the iShift box. Two pedal fun at 44 ton!

I never liked the iShift. much prefer the y box with the splitter. the 460 is a lovely engine though, pulls like a train. even more fun if you chip it up to 530 in the top 3 gears. turns it into a nice cruiser even fully loaded.
Cheers Raelrigs,
So What Do You Think Of It Then ?

Not much done to it: Pipercross filter and lowered 40mm, but other than that: just some very nice BFGoodrich rubber and off we go :D
