Just got round to rehousing my pooter in its nice new CM 201. Tried it out first using my Akasa 2Qu silvermountain 2, all running fine with an idle temperature of around 50-52, seems fine for an Athlon 2700.

So then I decided to break out my spanking new Zalman (thanks Graeme), installed it with a dot of arctic silver (using their instructions). Then installed the fan and placed it over the heatsink, all fine so far. Turned the machine on and let it idle for a few minutes in the BIOS screen, and noticed the temperature was at 78C - ouch. I turned the machine off for a few minutes and put the sides on the case, and then turned it on again - beep beep beep and the polite Asus lady told me I had a memory error and it would only start if I set the FSB to 133, again the temperatures were at 70+C.

Hmm, I put the Akasa back on, and the temperature dropped to 46C and all worked fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Is your fan blowing or sucking? It's supposed to blow air over the heatsink?

Sorry, this is probably a stupid one, but is the fan working?

If it is pointigh the right way and operating, it can only be the positioning and/or compound, 'cos it does work quite well.
