View Full Version : I thought it was slow, but..
Seriously, my 1MB connection supplied by NTL appears to have slowed down to a crawl. So I used the Broadband Benchmark thingy (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp) and look what I got..
Direction
Downstream
Actual Speed
336 Kbps (42.0 KB/sec)
True Speed
362 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Direction
Upstream
Actual Speed
56 Kbps (7.0 KB/sec)
True Speed
60 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Is it just me, or is that way too slow for a 1MB connection.
Not only that, but I'm also a victim of the 'Random Disconnect and take at least 5 minutes to reconnect about 5-10 times a day' Problem.
And what an annoying problem this is. I'm running along in CS or NS, then suddenly 'BAM' I lose connection, just like that, for absolutely no reason at all. What do I do? I go and turn the box off, inconveniencing whoever happens to be watching cable at the time. Then I wait at least 5 minutes (often much more) until I regain my connection. Then, I often find, that it took so long I need to restart my computer in order to get my Internet back. Sigh. Oh, and this also happens when I'm either downloading or just surfing, normally the former (it seems to like disconnecting right before my 500+ mb download is completed).
What did the tech support say? 'We're working on it'. Are they really? Well it seems to me getting worse :(.
my 512k line from BY :
Direction : Downstream
Actual Speed : 476 Kbps (59.5 KB/sec)
True Speed (estimated) : 514 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Im getting faster rates than usual with my NTL 600k line (73.2KB/s), havent been having any problems what so ever recently, apart from a few weeks ago when they blamed a storm for bringing the net down for 14hrs??

if anything its deinately the worms that are slowing it down , on tw i get constant backdoor attemtpts from other tw users , its that bad that the tw email is allowing big@boss viri through the door.
I have complained constantly with logs and they dont seem to be doing a thing. Its proabably the same at nthell.

I have a router netween my PC and the NTL modem but speed test on my 600k connection shows:
Downstream - 532 kps
Upstream - 132 kps
My typical download speed is 71Kb/s
OMG your upstream is slower than my downstream splatty
I'm so proud
<Gives his dial-up a friendly slap>

Thought id do the test myself. 600K NTL line.
Downstream 563 Kbps (70.4 KB/sec) 608 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 118 Kbps (14.8 KB/sec) 127 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Nothing wrong there.

492 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream
112 Kbps (14.0 KB/sec)

It's been slower lately but I think theres a problem with the box. Engineers coming to look at it tomorrow.

Change your proxy server :- Try inktomi3-bre.server.ntl.com Port 8080 for example... your probably hacked onto a crappy one. My locals are inktomi1-gui.server.ntl.com (1/2/3 Guildford) but they are normally crappy :)
Net seems to be running slightly faster now, so I thought I'd do the test again..

Not too good. :(
Not only that, but when playing an online game such as Natural Selection or Counter Strike, my ping repeatedly goes up and down from 40 - 200! It's terrible.
Anyone know whats going on?

Which proxy server are you using? http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/ has everything you need to know!
How do I find out what proxy server I'm using? To my knowledge I'm not using one?

Internet Explorer : Tools | Options Connections tab, "Lan Settings" button then in the bottom section it should say proxy server - if it's not setup then you use a local default one. But as I said use Grahams site above and try a different proxy server.
Okay, using the proxy server you suggested, my download speed has increase slightly, and my upload speed has decreased.

Worth testing a few... what speed test site are you using?
The one in the first post (http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp).
Okay, switched to another proxy server, getting..
Direction
Downstream
Actual Speed
960 Kbps (120.0 KB/sec)
True Speed
1036 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Direction
Upstream
Actual Speed
152 Kbps (19.0 KB/sec)
True Speed
164 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Seems better, the upload speed isn't as good as it could be thought :/

I have the 600kb connection and here is what I get :-
Direction Actual Speed True Speed (estimated)
Downstream 560 Kbps (70.0 KB/sec) 604 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Upstream 120 Kbps (15.0 KB/sec) 129 Kbps (inc. overheads)
Not bad really, however I always take those tests with a inch of salt. Just try downloading a big file and see what throughput you get s the best - my server is pretty nippy, try http://forums.lcdc.cc/LCDC_Install1-05-26.exe just to see what speed you get.
It was up to about 110kb/s when the download finished. I'll play some CS and see how it goes.

Ok, I level out at the end at 70kb on a 600kbs service. Your on a 1024kbs service... so my speed should be 59% the speed of yours.. and I got 65% not that far off. In terms of games you will notice very little difference as then the issue is to do with latency and not bandwidth. It don't matter what service your on 128/600/1024/2048 the amount of time it takes to connect to a server are all pretty much identical. EG If you pint the www.lcdc.cc website it will most likely not by any faster than my connection.

Woah woah, I connect to the server okay, I'm talking about my in-game ping.
For example, a 1mb connection should give me a solid -50 ping throughout the whole game. My ping continuously goes up to 100+ levels. Why is this happening?

Do a tracert to the server you play on... at the moment the Blast virus is still causing some hassle which could be why at the moment... or you have one hope that is crappy and needs reporting.

It's a jolt.co.uk server, they are decent. No one else I've seen has odd ping, they are all pretty steady. What did you mean by 'one hope' ?

If you do "tracert www.jolt.co.uk" you will see how many servers you actually connect through. One of those may be having problems, and each one is a hop (not hope!) :)
NTL are having routing problems atm, i know a few people in manchester who are routed via new york to get onto servers in London. And about 27 hops in the process atleast.
So do tracert's to the server IPs that you play on and see where you are routing through.
Okay, did the tracert. Doesn't really mean anything to me, heres a piccy..

Good? Bad?
I'd guess it's bad from the number of timeouts you have?

Thought as much.
