View Full Version : Where should I go?
OK not owned my own domain in ages... were should i go for buying and hosting a domain, anyone know of somewhere with a decent price/uptime ratio ;)
I'd like to get the hosting at the same place as the domain as it saves me effort, and possibly money.
Also what are peoples thoughts on php over standard html, yay or nay ?
this is an area where i can definately offer some help as i am a part-time domain buyer/seller.
for domains i 100% recommend namecheap.com.
they are cheap($8.88), have good support and you get lots of control over the name. for people who only buy a couple of domains they are perfect (i have about 1/3rd of my 40 odd domain portfolio there.)
do not bother buying the domain from your web-host as you lose your control over it (have to ask them) and it becomes a pain if you move hosts as you have to transfer the name to the new host and also renewals are complicated this way as well.
if you want more info then i am happy to talk on msn just im me @ ciqala@hotmail.com (not for email use)
as for hosting that depends on what features you need and what kind of space/bandwidth you are after

I definately vouch for them, and I know for a fact many other people on this forum will too! Can't go wrong with them. Cheap, reliable, good customer service/support. Forums are friendly and theres always someone on there that can answer your questions. Servers do go down occasionally, but I doubt any hosting stays up 100% of the time. When your server does go down, they will post updates about it in their forums, letting you know the status of it, etc.
Oh, you can buy both domain and hosting from them too. :)
Cheers guys, i'll look into it futher when i get home, i'll add you to msn too, Ciqala, although i may forget so add me if you want :)
phil_d_tbp@hotmail.com (also not for email)
Always up for some banter over msn so feel free to add me people :)
PHP is not the same thing as HTML.
PHP is server script that produces a HTML output. If your site(s) are just static pages of HTML then you dont need PHP. If you wish to include features like forums, online stores or use databases etc. then you need something like PHP.
Most hosting companies offer PHP for free nowadays.

Plus you'll need some sort of database support, MySQL is the favourite on Linux based systems and MS SQL on Windows ones ;)

Yep - Its my job :)
Im mainly ASP tho. (VBScript and JScript) and generally use access - not the fastest or largest database in the world i admit, but you can knock things up in it pretty quickly and all M$ servers support it.
I switch to PHP for private projects - servers are cheaper, its open source so it gets updated regularly and has lots of extras like image manipulation and server interrogation stuff that asp doesnt

Do you write W3 compliant markup? I normally have questions regarding that (although I've almost sussed it all - www.zyon.org)
No fellow coldfusion users?
As for buying domains I usually use a-q.co.uk, not the cheapest but good support and can use a solo card.....

ouch! thats about 3x the going rate for a .com there. if you have a paypal account you could use your solo card through that to buy domains from namecheap.com for $8.88 which is about £5 and i'm not kidding when i say they are one of the best places around for domains. they offer dns, you can create your own nameservers on your domains, its easy to renew the names and they allow you to lock the domain to prevent any unauthorised transfers being made. in short anything you might need to set up on your domain is available to you so you dont need to rely on a support desk to add your dns changes as is the case with some places.
tip: steer clear of any companys that use verisign/netsol (network solutions) for the registrations as their name is mud with the whole industry and if you ever decide to transfer the name to somewhere cheaper or maybe even sell it then you will have to jump through hoop after hoop to do so... plus their support can be more than lacking on technical issues beyond the scope of the place you bought it from.

It depends how picky im feeling :) There have been so many standards for HTML now its getting stupid. Especially when you consider that these new rules dont do away with the old ways as the browsers still need to run older markup.
When someone actually decides that there is a new base standard and that we MUST follow it then i'll stick to it. I've been doing this for years now, i started at HTML 3. New people just pickup the new standards as they learn but us old school boys are stuck in our ways...

Are you a web designer/programmer sort of thing? :D
Yep :)
Also dabble in Dephi and Assembler. I've got a few programs up on the net that seem to be popular. Unfortunately the websites are terrible so i wont post links to them ;)

As said before PHP is not the same as HTML. Not all PHP pages send info to a web browser.
Domains from: www.firevision.net - very good fast reliable, cheap.
Hosting from www.bithost.co.uk
