Now I'm trusting you lot with this (not that anybody would do anything malicious :D )

Just in the interests of safety, please save anything important just in case.

brace yourself (http://computerbytesman.com/security/notepadpopups.htm)

For those of you with browsers other than IE, the page that the link leads to opens up a copy of notepad on your system, the contents of which can either be the source of a URL OR a local file on your PC

Combined with a little javascript, you can really **** people off with this, it even works in outlook, although you have to open the message in its own window for the script to run on my version

/pats firebird and walks off feeling smug

cheers

yep view-source along with http:// ftp:// etc. is a valid protocol in IE.

I'll stick with Opera thanks. It's worth using just for the no-popups option.

From a programming point of view...

IE - I can make this browser dance for me. :D

Mozilla / Netscape - Cross platform compatability :D

Cripes man, that's ages old :^) Been around for at least 8 months. I used it to scare people by opening calculator when they visited my web page in IE.

It was a vuln that MS flagged as "not serious". Hohoho.

Just for the record, I can't see why the hell anyone should use IE when there are so many better alternatives.

use IE when there are so many better alternatives.

Well for the PC (Windows) there is better alternative. Believe me, I've tried them all on many platforms.

I think it's either..

1) They just don't know about them.
2) They know about them, but see no reason to switch (they don't know there is anything wrong with IE).
3) They simply can't bothered to switch.
4) They pledged their alleigance to Microsoft.

Well I think the main reason people don't switch from I.E is that the net has been designed pretty much around it now days and Mozilla is looking alot weaker than it used to in comparison. Its certainly not ignorance, I've used them all, they simply arn't as good.

You forgot "don't care, mozilla's for hippies" :D

I'm with Peej, if you want to see a website how it was intended to be viewed use IE. If you want to spend your life thinking Dabs only sells one model of CRT, that's up to you....

I just don't see how you can say that IE is better than Mozilla or Opera?

Forth : It only said that it only sold one model because you gave me a link parsed in IE, when I later searched using Mozilla, it gave me the whole lot :D

And some websites (like mine) are designed for Mozilla, then later tweaked to work efficently with IE and others.

Mozilla is great. The 'narrow box' thing is not a limitation of Mozilla, it's simply the way Mozilla parses HTML. Most vB forums have this problem, I guess it's the way it was made. Text boxes on other forums work fine.

I've never experienced a single annoying pop-up since I installed Mozilla, and it's very easy to add 'allowed' sites, it's also very stable, but does munch more memory than IE (which is to be expected).

Opera?

Well Opera is good but not quite there yet.

There are so many funky things you can do with IE, from a web application point of view.

I'm all for competition, freedom of choice etc... but you wouldn't believe the things you can do with IE, that the other browers can't handle.

My job would certainly be easier if they didn't exsit!

I tend to use Opera quite a bit, simply because of it's use of MDI, which IE doesn't support, yet. (that's a hopeful yet). However as far as compatibility, and the functionality of the browser, IE, in my personal opinion, is far superior to Opera. Mozilla I have a great problem with.. it's incredibly slow. As a web developer, IE is a great browser to work with, as the latest version of the browser has finally taken web standards seriously. There's still far too many developers designing for this browser, or that browser rather than publicised standards. If they did that, there simply wouldn't be a problem visiting a site on any browser. Ah well, it'll happen in time.

I hope that one day all the browsers combine to make one big super browser called 'Mozilla Advanced'.

I reckon there should be one standard browser engine built by the W3C and every browser developer must use this one engine but can build onto it however they wish, as long as it doesn't break compatibility. Then there would be no possible way to have compatibility issues. If they wanted to offer or increase functionality to the browser engine itself, they'd have to submit a proposal to the W3C and it would be voted on whether to allow it. But other than that, they can do to the engine what they want as far as the user interface goes.

it'll never happen but would be great!

Well it's Mozilla Firebird for me. Firebird is a great browser. It's totally standards-compliant (isn't that the point of standards?), lean, stable (even though it's a beta) and it's "just a"(tm) browser... it doesn't try to impress us with added "features" that slow it down and introduce bugs and vulnerabilities.

What's more, Firebird renders pages faster than any other browser bar none (oh what a master of the sweeping statement am I). It has a built in pop-up suppressor, great cookie management, and no activex!

Best of all - it's skinnable!!! Yeah!

I love the default skin :D

The best thing I like is that the toolbars are fully customisable so you can go super minimalist!
