View Full Version : Leaving your PSU OUTSIDE the case?

just come across a preowned PSU that is meant to be 'silent' though I know that there is no such thing (and the fanles ones often have buzzing oudns which are said to be 'normal' from the manufacturer), so Im thinking will there be any probelm on making a little box for my PSU, perhaps with some foam around most of it (bar vent holes) and placing it outside my case?

clearly I will need to ensure the cables are long enough to reach - so my first question is, Is it fine to extend PSU cables? (using conventional same gauge wire and solder? (or will it cause electrical noise or something?)

Are there any surfaces that the PSU shouldnt touch? (apart from carpet obviosuly)

My main reasons for this are:

- The PSU should run cooler because it wont take in the heat emitted by CPU, so in automatic fan control mode, fans wont spin so fast.

- I'll have space in the rear top of my case for a couple of 5/7 Volted Papst/Panaflo's

Thoughts / Advice / Comments pls :D

Yup, this is fine as long as you hook everything up ok again :)

One thing though, make sure you make an earth cable from the PSU case to the computer case or you'll risk getting shocked.

You can buy an extension for the main motherboard cable if required, extending the four cable P4 lead is easy, and you can use extenders and splitters for the molex connectors.

Remember the earth!

Aha, Earth! yes thanks for that, shocking that I forgot that

Great, so if I can extend the cables I could leave the PSU in the room next door or ontop of my wardrobe :D

I thought you were talking 2ft but it sounds more like 20ft? Another wire(s) to hide in the room:)

2 Ft was the original plan...but the plans are now expanding :)

will prob try with a couple of foot to see if thats alright - if not then extending it further shouldnt be too much of a problem I guess

Remember that the PSU forms parts of your exhaust system.

You'll still need a fan or two to extract the heat from your case (especially in this weather)

Another thing to be concerned about if you are planning on extending the cables greatly is Voltage drop. You may find that you will require heavier cables to avoid this. Not sure if it will apply but just thought I better mention it.

Not sure you see anything worth considering there... Are these distances enough to effect the voltage lines do we think?
