View Full Version : How noisy should it be?

I have just had a PC built to my specification and my first thought is that the computer is a bit noisy in operation compared to my previous PC. It has a Coolermaster 210 case with rear and top fans. There appears to be 2 noises - a continuous whine (for want of a better word) and a pulsing noise. Owing to my inexperience I would like any advise on what noises are perfectly normal and what noises might indicate a problem.

Many thanks

Pete

.....and so it begins. :D

Right, the noises you hear are from the fans you mentioned, the PSU fan(s), possibly the fan on your grahics card (if you have one), and the fan on your motherboard (if there is one)

The whining will either be one of the fans or perhaps a slight resonance in the case sides. Place your hands firmly each side of the case and see if the pitch changes.

There are too many ways to begin silencing your new case to list in one post. Search this forum and look at Kustom's website for inspiration.

Most mods are easy, with the exception of watercooling which requires a steady hand and a modicum of patience.

Any questions, ask away, but do a little research first.

Take the sides of your PC off, then using a rolled up magazine / kitchen roll tube etc, listen to each fan in turn to find out which is making the most noise.

It is likely that the 'pulsing' you hear is resulting in two (or more) fans spinning at very slightly different speeds leading them to synchronise at regular intervals. Better quality fans will resolve this.

Can't remember where I picked up that tip.....but it works.

The alternative is to stop each of your fans in turn but there are obvious reasons why you may not want to or be able to do this easily.

My mum always used to say "Never stick anything smaller than your elbow in your case fans." May save your fingers :) Although i do require a lot of patches for the sleeves of my shirts :p

Thanks very much for your response. I am relieved that the noises don't appear anything to worry about. Embarking on a project to reduce the noise is appealing but my confidence level is not that high at the moment :-)

My Coolermaster tower is sitting on my desk at the moment I guess sticking it under the desk on a carpetted surface might help the noise a little.

Cheers

Pete
