... a fan speed controller that uses variable voltage instead of variable pulse width?

The 3.5" rheobus I got from Kustom is good, its just it doesn't agree with my fans. All emit a buzzing sound from the motor when not run at full speed, something I don't find with the Zalman controller I use on my CPU fan. I've tried Papst, YS-Tech, Sunon, Adda and Panaflo and all show the same problem, albeit it is better with the Panaflo's than the others.

Therefore, I am after a black fan speed controller which basically uses 4 potentiometers to vary the voltage supplied to the fan, rather than one that supplies a constant 12v and varies the speeds by sending pulses to the motor (which causes the buzzing).

Please help! My sleep is suffering!

I'm begging now.

Cheers,
Stephen

If you want something custom made, try emailing Nige...

me@baybus.co.uk
nigel@baybus.co.uk
(they both work i think!)

If it can be made i'm sure he can do it...

Unfortunately, that website shows they aren't taking any business at the moment.

Basically, I am after a fan speed controller that works by varying voltage, will fit in with and match a black Lian Li PC71 case and is truly silent. I'm not too bothered about fancy glowing blue led's surrounding the pots - the power LED on my case is quite bright enough thanks!

The Vantec controllers look to be the closest to my needs, but seemingly there is an irritating buzz from the capacitors on the board. Not sure what the caps are needed for - my degree is in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and I can't think what use a cap is in what should be a purely resistive circuit, and a DC one at that. Mind you, that was 5 years ago now and I'm getting a bit rusty :o

Cheers,
Stephen

I'm gonna see if Kustom can turn up anything for me first. Thomas is on the case :D (I hope ;) )

Failing that, I'll give them a try. Sharky, what was your experience of them like? Would they be able to build to spec, and did you need to provide anything, like blanking plates for your case? What was the quality of the finished product like?

So many questions. Input, need input ;)

Cheers,
Stephen

Nigel builds exactly to your own spec. I sent him a blanking plate to make sure I got an exact match for my case, but they do sell Lian Li plates aswell.

Just going to find the link to give you a piccy :)

Here's the baybus

You can see it in my case here

Hmm, looks good. I think I'll give them a try when their website is back up, assuming I can't get anything from Kustom.

What was the cost like, if you don't mind my asking?

Cheers,
Stephen

Thomas built, well customised, me one.

I had the Black vantec nexus, which had the same buzzing problem as yours. I sent it back to Kustom and Thomas swapped the face-plates over with one of the silver ones, which strangely don't make the buzzing noise, and sent it back. It's completely silent and fits my black igloo case perfectly.

Couldn't be happier with it :D
