View Full Version : Severe Heat Problems
I'm not trawling for sympathy but before I swapped my motherboard, CPU and video card for faster, hotter kit, I had a quiet PC.
I still have a relatively quiet PC but the temperatures have soared!!!!!!!!!
Idle is 50°C for the CPU (ambient temperature is a bit higher than normal) and 59°C if I play a couple of races in MotoGP.
The North Bridge hovers between 39 and 42°C although it no longer has a Zalman ZM80-HP right beneath it, giving off high heat.
It is now impossible to overclock at all and although I am not a demon overclocker, I like to see what it can do.
What really, really cheeses me off is that James77 has the same kit as me except for an Asus Springdale motherboard and he gets 40°C maximum - and that's when he's overclocked to 3.6GHz !!!!!!!!!!!! Grrrrrrr.
He's using the stock Intel cooler and it's in a steel case?!?!
Mind you, it's a YY Cube and he has 4 x 92mm and 1 x 120mm fans cooling and extracting. Did I mention that it sounds like a hovercraft taking off!
The moral of this tale - you can have speed or you can have silence, don't expect both at the same time.
(unless you've got a VapoChill) :p
Not enough airflow in the case. Usually, if you leave the side off a badly cooled and planned case, it often won't improve things because air movement is static.
My setup must be heat trapping 'cos removing the side just dropped the CPU temperature by 10°C !!

If the PC isn't crashing, then don't worry about temps.
People who don't plan on overclocking, and have a machine that doesn't crash, don't need to worry about extra cooling.
Hi
My CPU is always below 40c! Even when i play intensive games like Medal Of Honor!
The CPU fan is a bit loud but i am more than happy with the cooling.
:D
time for more drastic cooling alan

Watercooling and effecient air cooling is the best combination I think, I have a watercooling cm201b modded with 2 exhaust fans, all 4 fans in the pc are cm neon LEDs.
At full speed I have temps under 30c load and with all fans on silent 7v I get around 35 load.
I had a pretty similar setup to you, but it actually got so hot it used to crash
CPU 58-60C, NB 50Cish, even the System temp was 50C
decided to make the push to watercooling now

it looks like you can have performance and silence - this A64 thread shows the performance of a single channel A64 3200+ - as can be seen, it outperforms a P4 C 3.2GHz quite handily.
the interesting part is, the poster confirmed that the system doesnt reach over 39 degrees C when overclocked, using a standard AMD HSF...

also, try a google search for "eliminator k8" passive K8 HSF.
that could be a good upgrade for a silentish system, when its released.
A confession. I had to re-install Windows last week so all software was refreshed. The daily ambient temperature is now down a bit, the front two fans are back on, running between 6 and 10 volts thanks to my Musketeer, the rear fan is now a Titan slowed down by a Zalman fanmate, and the topblowhole Papst is back on.
The new install of MBM5 shows an idle of 39°C (down from 51) and the Northbridge is in the twenties. After 2 hours of MotoGP 2 the CPU is back up to 58°C (instead of 61) but it's temperature drops like a stone the minute it's back to no gaming apps.
Sadly the PC is sitting on the floor but it does mean that the noise isn't at ear level anymore - so I've got a reasonably quiet PC again :)
... I'm even thinking about a little overcl****ing soon, now that I've updated the BIOS....

get rid of the case and do this :

much cooler system, get a temp in the low thirties (eg 32), and if i open my window i get even lower :)... it has a fat copper heatsink which doesnt appear to even get mildly warm, coupled with one of the liquid bearing 21db fans i got for a fiver. the loudest thing is the harddrive, but i've just purchased a sata150 maxtor9 to take over :)

In theory if your case fans are set up well and you have tidy cables, it shouldn't make a difference weather the case is there or not.

i think the idea is that without a case, all the heat is lost by convection and doesnt need airflow to extract it - even alu cases can get very hot with some reasonably rapid components, and little airflow..

without a case, there is a room full of ambient-temperature air to blow over the heatsink, as there is so much of the air it doesnt get as warm, and so the system stays cooler.. if i open the window then there is a cool breeze which blows over it aswell... anyhow thats my 'adsl server' computer, the one i'm on now is watercooled :)

edit, i'm sure ambient temperature makes no sense :) prolly just 'room temperature air' instead.. lol
