View Full Version : Noise Isolator 3.5" VR Fan Speed Controller
Hi Guys,
Dunno if any of you have bought one of these, but are they supposed to make a noise?
The ones I have make a sort of whining noise, which I thought was a hard drive at first with the bearings going!
If they are supposed to make a noise, how the 'eck do they help quiten a PC if they themselves make noise?
Cheers,
Stephen
OK, so I was talking out of my proverbial rear. These rheobuses aren't making any noise.
However, my fans are. For some reason, the motors on the fans are buzzing when I have them hooked up to the rheobus, presumably because they do not get a steady 12v - proven when I turn the fan speed up to full. I have tried YS-Yech fans, Papst fans and Adda fans and all do it.
Therefore, does anybody know of a black fan controller, either 3.5" or 5.25", that works using only a potentiometer to vary voltage, rather than one that sends pulses of voltage to the drives?
Cheers,
Stephen

I have one and I think it does make a whining noise, only way to tell is to manually stop the fans with your fingers.
I use 4X 80mm YS-Tech's, 2 front, 1 rear and 1 on cpu.
The noise comes from the front of the case. If the fans were making the noise the rear and cpu fans would also make noise.
Actually, I tried it with all the fans I own currently. With the YS-Tech, Papst and Adda, you can definitely hear a buzzing/whining sound from the fan motor, even with the fan stopped with my finger. This goes away with the fan at full blast. However, my Panaflo fans are fine and only make a slight whining noise when plugged into the rheobus. The rheobus plugged in on its own is silent - I took it out the case and held it up to my ear - not a sound, even with a fan attached.
I have ordered some more Panaflo's to replace one ailing Panaflo and also the 2 Adda's at the front of my Lian-Li case which will all be plugged into the rheobus.
I just need to find a 92mm fan for my CPU which I can also use without it making a particularly loud noise. Or I suppose I could use another spare Panaflo 80mm fan on it which should work, but might not cool as effectively.
I'll see how I get on.
The good news, is that my machine now makes only a quiet hum switched on. I am running the Zalman 400W PSU, 4 Panaflo fans that are 7volted, 2 Adda fans at the front of the case that are 5volted and a Papst 92mm fan for my CPU running from a Zalman fan mate. It's this last one I really want to be able to control from the rheobus so that I don't have to open my case to tweak it.
Cheers,
Stephen
