Why have NTL been so poor lately? Grrrr I hate thier service, thank good I'm moving home and onto to Zen next week :).

They have been having terrible email problems these past few weeks and before that gaming that was the problem. I don't use my NTL mail account so it doesn't bother me, but some people I need to email might use NTL and wont be getting them!!

I play a lot of counter-strike (at least I did) but it was unplayable due to my 2000+ ping

And now the Nochex problem, where will it all end

Is anybody else having NTL problems?

We've got NTL and never have any problems. My ping in DOD is 100ish on Austrailian and American servers, and 40 on English ones. :D

No problems with the email but my service slowed down when they "ugraded" me from 128 to 150kbs. Iwas averaging around 180kbs when I had the 128 service but after they changed the speed (and price), I slowe down to around 160kbs. Can't complain really as it is still better than the advertised rate but for an extra £7/month I've gone up to the 600kbs service.

I've been using Nochex at work this week because of the problems with NTL but it seems to be OK now.

All in all, it's not the best service in the world, but with my phone and cable TV it's still cheaper than any competitors as a package. So I'll stick with it.

The only problem i have with NTL atm is one of my email accounts cant be checked all the time, it just times out when using OE, my first account works fine as this is on a seperate server.
NTL have got some major server problems atm, they cant keep up with the number of email accounts that are in use so during peak times for email access etc the servers throw a wobbly.
(This is what you have to expect from people an ISP that gives each broadband customer 15 free email accounts, but doesnt have the server infrastructure to handle them all)

My max dl speeds have increased since i got the 512k service in febuary 2002, even though my line was always at 600k anyway.
Pings in games can get below 40 quiet often and dont go far from 100 on very busy foreign servers.

I'm in the same boat as Conan, upgraded to 600k when the price hike came on the slower speed.

Their e-mail service seems to be regularly going down, and it has become more regular in recent months. As for internet service, I have only ever experienced one failure for a few hours. And as Conan says, their package price is the most convenient available to me.

The reason they have hiked the prices of the lower speed package up is to get everyone onto the 600k service or above, there were also roumers that they will be stopping their dial up service to try and get everyone onto their broadband service, i cant see this been true just yet as the coverage of NTL cable does not match the coverage of NTL tv and phone service.

I use NTL dialup and I seriously doubt they will stop that service - they have spent too much on setting up these services - dumping it would mean loosing hundreds of thousands of pounds before the customers got involved.

(Im in a non BB area btw)

Not only that, NTL provides the dialup infrastructure for other ISP's such as Tesco.net.

Just recieved this:
Dear customer,

Improvements to your email service

As you may have noticed, ntlworld's email service has recently suffered some intermittent technical problems and some of our customers have been temporarily unable to retrieve their email. If you have suffered from any of these problems we'd like to offer you our sincere apologies and to explain a little more about our plan to fix this.

Over the next few days we will be increasing the capacity of our email service and removing more of the large volume of unread emails that slows down the system.

In particular, we will be changing the number of days we store unread email for to 90 days, in line with other leading ISPs. We will be making this change with effect from Monday 16th June.

By making these changes and reducing the volume of unread emails stored on the service, we will significantly improve the quality of your email service.

Please note that this will only affect you if you are NOT using an email client (like Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express) to access your email account. If you pick up your email using an email service like this it's downloaded to your computer and will be saved until YOU decide that you no longer want to keep it there!

If you normally access your email using webmail, or you check your inbox less frequently than every 90 days, any email that is older than 90 days will be deleted, so you should move anything you want to keep that is older than 90 days to your PC. This is easily done by collecting your email using an email client (such as Outlook Express which was supplied with your ntlworld account).

For more information about this improvement to your email service, please visit www.ntlworld.com/email

Once again, our apologies for any inconvenience that you may have encountered in recent weeks,

ntl:home Internet Services
