Is it cool these days not to be able to spell or don't they teach spelling and grammar at school any more ?
Every forum I go on is full of people who seem incapable of putting together even a basic sentence correctly.

I know, it's disgusting really. What really bugs me is when you try and correct them, in a friendly way to help them out, other people jump in and start with the "it doesn't really matter, it's just a forum"
I know what you mean about typos, but tbh if you understand them then whats the point in complaining, i just dont like it when people start typing every word in short hand on purpose as though their typing a text message.
But you have to allow for some mistakes, as you have possibly read, people of all ages come onto these forums, and post after they have been the the pub or after a BBQ where they have been drinking and they make mistakes because they cant type properly due to lack of co-ordination, i for one am guilty on this part from time to time, so i dont see why this is a major problem.
As long as you can understand what there saying its ok with me.
People get lazy over spelling because they know that spell check will correct it for them then they come onto forums and seem to forget they don't have spell check to help them out!

Technology has a lot to answer for. Whilst it is great that kids don't have to share one computer between 15 in your average school anymore, ease of accessibility has bred reliance, which in turn is killing off basic Maths and English capabilities in this country.
I am so thankful that I went to an infants school where we were taught to tell the time using an analogue clock and a junior school where calculators were kept locked in a cupboard and only brought out for 'special' maths lessons.
I loved TV when I were a lad, but TV didn't start until 9:30 in the morning, and apart from Saturday morning shows or Rainbow at lunchtime, there was no kids TV until late afternoon. Now kids have to be prised away from the constant drivvle.
Johnny Ball should be knighted for the services he has given to promoting maths and science. His 'Think of a number' and 'Think again' TV programmes should be compulsory viewing for all kids.
Have you seen Blue Peter recently? I realise that I'm a touch older than I used to be but I'm not wearing rose-tinted spectacles when I say that I remember that it actually used to be educational in places. It's presented by idiots, for idiots now.
BTW, the fact that at least two people in this thread have used the words 'there' or 'their' when they should have used 'they're' is very telling isn't it?
BA
Winds me up a treat! 'nuff said :D
/me enters pedants corner and scrawls "enough" 200 times on the black-board ;)
I get it a lot on IRC.
I hate having to answer serious questions sensibly when people cannot even be bothered to string the question together in at least a partially correct format.
I feel like just telling them to ask the question in a correct manner, then i'll reply :)
another thing is people using "lol" as many times as possible in the one sentence, which isnt even a funny one :(
i.e.
"lol i gota gameboy sp lol"
sigh, that drives me mad

schools are well done in , even though iq is rising with each generation , intelligence in the real world isnt and seems in hand with the balme culture.
When i was a lad there was no allowing calculators even for special mathematics , the general americanistaion of the globe and the english language has a lot to answer for.
I type fast so every so oftern i mistype or do a speliing mistake , I dont bother to check or to proofread so I just hit submit.
MY PERSONAL HATE RIGHT NOW IS "MY BAD" , arrrrgh.
Pet hate people who say, or even worse write Train Station, its a Railway Station you morons!!!

All that 'leet' talk - like using numbers instead of syllables as often as possible and ending every verb with 'xxored' really just winds me up !
I also hate it text messages that are so deliberately composed that way - ok some things like 'b4' when used occasionally are useful time savers, but when everyword is shortened with a number and the only way to decipher it is to read it aloud... surely that's just a bit far?!
Rant over ;)

Agreed. I keep wanting to say "Your bad what?"
My other pet hate is people who deliberately write the as "teh"
The Rage3d forums are really bad for people doing that.
I dunno whether it is because I consider myself to have a good grasp of the English language. More likely, it is because I worked my butt off to get the grades for English I did at school and it annoys me to see people who are too lazy to spell/write properly.
Rant over

I hate text speak. Pure and simple. Once I got a text message from a mate, it read something like this:
I'm @my house, come round ......
Now this guy has a girlfriend called Amy, so I read it quickly and head to Amy's house. Well I stand there andI say "Where is he?" and she says "What?"
A few seconds and it clicked, I re-read it and grrrrrrr. Me and Amy laughed and I went to Rob's house.
Bad grammar is always annoying. TBH though, I can handle mistakes in spelling, as long as it was a mistake. :)
did you all have cream tea and scones after it? and laugh merrily as tim got eaten by a shark?

I wonder if the "lol" people actually say "lol" in conversation ;)
I've never said it (I hope!) but I've thought it a couple of times. I'm concious of it though, and I'm gonna start trying to avoid it's use altogether so I don't end up using it in general conversation.
l33t anonymous meeting, 7pm Friday at the church hall, all welcome :D

Quite ironic really - to type 'at' in text, on my phone you press the '2' key once and the '8' key once. To put in an @ symbol, I have to press the right menu key, scroll to insert, scroll to symbol, find the @ sign, press the confirm key and there it is. voila, almost enough to make you feel proud , but you then realise you've made about 10 keypresses for something that could be conveyed far more sensibly with 2.

I must admit, the I don't like the way that people shorten their words as if they're texting on their phones.
Words like, "M8, L8, D8, IC," and then shortening words like, "Tho".
"LOL" has been out there a hell of a long time.... before the net came about and there were only bulletin boards and MUDS, so I suppose I've grown up with ones like that, so LOL doesn't bother me too much. Sometimes they can get too complicated, like, "ROFL, IIRC, LMAO". If a person came into that conversation, they just wouldn't have a clue what was going on!

Dave,
I don't think anyone here has a problem with people who have problems with spelling.
The general direction of the rant is aimed at those who deliberately mis-spell or abbreviate words because they think it looks "cool."
Cheers,
Stephen
Sorry Big A, I can't resist it:D
don't have to share one computer between 15 in your that would be among then?
I loved TV when I were a lad
that would be was
To be fair, even those among us who write what they consider to be good grammatical English, and I am one of them, do not have as complete a grasp of English comprehension as we think we do, and I am one of them. :o

You are impossible to understand sober! never mind drunk!
LOL @ all j00 l33t spel0rs.
Couldn't resist, sorry :)
Poor spelling does annoy me sometimes, but it has to be quite substantial, up to the point where it is difficult to understand without reading twice. Sometimes I get the urge to correct people, but don't want to appear rude or condescending. Basically, I can live with it.
Disclaimer **This post has be thoroughly proof read**
This drives me up the wall also; a combination of elite speak, text message shorthand and crazy text make it almost impossible to communicate anymore, . Additionally if you can't spell read a dictionary ;)

The T9 on the T68i is very good indeed. Much better than the Nokia 3210 I had beforehand, as it is very quick to insert unknown names and places. :)

You are in front of a computer, you have the ability to correct typing errors, you arent timed on how fast you take to type a reply to a thread.
Slow down & correct the mistakes :)

I think Graeme is right, this could go on for a while.
I think the initial point was valid about so-called elite spelling/abreviations, but it's getting a bit picky about spelling and grammatical errors now.

I've always thought that "disk" was used for Floppy Disks and "disc" was used for CD's as in Compact Disc.
Or am I wrong? Someone want to correct me or back me up on this?

I'm of the same opinion. "Disc" for CD's because they physically are discs. "Disk" for floppies because it's short for "diskette".
PS - When I initially typed this reply I used the abreviation IIRC, and then got paranoid and changed it to "I'm of the same opinion". Damn this thread! :D
