Took my driving test today and, well I thought I did okay, but it seems I failed due to hesitating to move off at junctions and roundabouts :(
I'm a bit peeved, mainly because I had built it up so much to myself that I was going to pass. Got my next one booked within an hour of failing, hopefully next time eh?

it took me 3 go's so don't feel to down.
i didn't deserve to fail the first 2 times though as they were both such stupid things. first time i failed because i went around one of those mini-roundabouts (you know the ones that are just a white bump in the road) in 3rd gear rather than 2nd. this roundabout only had 3 junctions that were clearly visible for a good long way before you reached it. coming along in 4th and i could see that there was nothing for miles around so there was really no need to even slow down, but because it was a test i dropped to about 20mph in 3rd. now the stupid thing was that i could have done 20mph in 2nd and not have failed.
2nd test was just as pathetic. i was failed because i didn't put the hand brake on at a set of traffic lights i was stopped at for all of 10 seconds.
my driving instructor thought i was being given a hard time so the 3rd test was done at a different test centre where i passed without problems :)
i hate bloody driving testers. just typing this out as brought me out in a cold sweat.
Bad luck. Annoying you got failed only on drving too slowly.

Bad luck!
i passed on my second try!!
the first examiner was a bit of a wimp!!
The only reason i failed was because he nearly fell out of the car at the start when we were leaving the test station!! Well it was his fault he didn't check his door was closed!!!! :):) but he also said i didn't turn around to look out the rear window enough!! :(

Better luck next time mate.
I’ve took 6 lessons with my instructor and he's told me to book my test, so I’m booking it some time today hopefully.

How long in advance did you get your test? Around me the waiting list is now up to nearly 3 months! It was shorter when I was taking my tests but I still think this is a very long time.

I haven’t quite got round to booking it yet but I believe its 6 weeks thaw recently someone told me it was 10.

it's all these old, over weight men drinking port and discussing how many "young" people they can fail today.
i have a friend who took her test around 3 years ago, around the same time as me. now i'm not saying she was a bad driver but she was far from competent and took an age to make a decision. in my view (and her families for that matter) she was not safe to be on the road on her own without more practice. anyway.....she went to the test centre wearing a very short skirt and a rather tight top. needless to say, she passed first time:rolleyes:
if you think about it, being a driving tester makes a perfect old mans job. you get to sit down in a car, being driven around by someone, telling them where to go and what to do and criticise there every mistake. plus you get to look at nice ladies legs and upset numerous young people
sorry.....another rant over:p
Took me 4 attempts to pass my test, 2 in Glasgow and 2 in Bristol, where I now live.
The 1st attempt, I was kicking myself as I failed for not using my indicators. Prior to that day I had never not used my indicators, and indeed it is a pet hate of mine when other people don't use them either.
Attempt number 2 was fair enough. I pushed my way out into traffic to turn right a bit too aggressively and the instructor didn't like it. I also hit the kerb on the parallel park.
No 3 I failed for speeding. For those who don't know, there is a hill coming out of Bristol through a village called Westbury-On-Trim heading for the Mall/M5. It is quite a steep hill, and needs a bit of welly to get up. Unfortunately, I carried too much speed over the brow of the hill and down the other side, and hence failed for speeding.
Attempt no 4 was success, and I only picked up a few minors :D
Hang in there mate. Sitting my driving test was one of the most nerve racking things I have ever done, so I can sympathise. You'll get there in the end.
Cheers,
Stephen

Thanks for all the morale boosting guys :)
I got my next test booked for the 24th which was only 3 weeks from my last one, so quite soon.
K Hussain: Have you done your theory? It took me about 4/5 months to even think about doing that...
edit: morale not moral

I took my theory test and passed fist time with full marks. To be honest I kept putting it off until I heard they're going to add those video scenes to it.
About 6 moths after passing it I started taking lessons which I had a little head start with cos I learnt the basics when I was 13 and since then I have had time to almost perfect them.

I think I had a good time slot for it - last test on a Saturday morning. Was expensive, and was booked in very last minute ( I was told either wait 2 months, or step in to this cancellation later this week...) but I think the examiner was keen to get home, and I passed first time :)
It's probably less writing for them to do if people pass...
Only got two minor faults too, which was great ! :D

Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!
I passed!
I managed to put it up on the curb as I pulled in passed a car, but the instructor didn't seem to mind!
8 minors in total. Been driving around to Chichester (nearest big town) a lot in my car. :D

Awww that sucks. I take it that was your first? 2nd time passers are the best drivers ;)
I used to have the trouble that I didn't move my head enough to the mirrors, just flicking my eyes at them. My theory on them is when every you go to touch the pedals, or any control, give the mirrors a good looking at. :)
K Hussain
16-08-2003, 13:08
Yes it was my first, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, just those mirrors and that reversing round a corner I went too wide on.
What really sucks is that the waiting list is about 3 months now.
DaveMark when’s your test m8?

im about to start lessons, took me ages to get my provisional. im well annoyed coz i could of been having lessons for months now.
my mate passed his driving test recently, and he said that although it is really nerve racking the person who was testing him said that he admired his confidence.
soo that kinda means that as long as your confident behind the wheel when taking the test they might forget some of the minors :D
DaveMark
19-09-2003, 17:31
took my mock test today ,, and failed :( .. it was due to speed i was doing 50 in a 40, i did not relise it was a 40 there is only one big sign after the roundabout .... and if u dont see that u dont know what it is and it seems like a 60 road,
oh well i will have to rember that for the real test :)
dave
The trick is NOT to miss the signs :D
Although there are many locations where it is easier said than done, the 3 points on my licence are for this very reason

Well done m8, only 1 minor that’s bloody good.
Got my second one coming up in 3 weeks and my instructors decided to change profession, got a hold of this other instructor and he's on holiday and comes back Monday, that gives me 2 weeks to get used to the new car.

sometimes insurance companies aren't fussed about wheels. When I started driving, I wanted to put new wheels on my car and the insurance company said they wouldn't cover it all. Went to another and they said it didn't bother them, no extra costs !
Interestingly, with my current car (under the same firm) - the insurance company didn't object to me changing the standard 15" wheels on my car to flashier 17" ones, but if I wanted to add little extra lips to the front and rear bumper and change the grill - I had to wait until I was 21 before they would insure me on the car.
No, it doesn't make any sense to me either...
My theory test was a joke, i was in and out in 20 mins, that included doing and practice at the start and filling out a questionaire at the end, and i got 35/35 no problems. There was this other guy there who was on his 6th attempt too. My practical was a piece of **** too, 7 minor faults like but still easy. Took me til 2 1/2 months after my 17th birthday to have passed everything. I think they need to make the testing harder, cause then maybe there wouldnt be so many knobs on the road.
The theory test is actually a serious joke, the practical isn't as much, but it depends more on your examiner/test centre. I don't really think this should be the case, but until they can find an objective way of judging ability we're stuck with these variations. Has anyone out the had the latest theory test, with the video? If so, do you think it actually helps?

No im just saying it was a bit too easy, especially the theory, althohugh my driving proabably isnt the safest. but hey your only young once, i have no offence on my licence.
hi folks,
as everything else the driving tests seem to have been made into a fine business with a lot of useless purile deliberations. are there any book/cd that tell how to do manuevers well enough to pass. my driving instructor seems to be as lost as me!!! :(

the highway code?
Seiously its just mirror, signal, manouver.
Manouvers are something that come with time and practice. When i first learnt to drive a car (and when i learnt to drive the forklift - principles are the same) it took a while to do each manouver. After about 3 weeks on a building site driving a forklift you didnt have to think...it just became natural.
Just give it time and practice.

there are other snippets of useful info in there, like don't try and undertake an artic turning left/ overtake an artic turning right....
shame so many people still want to try and find out what 40+ ton on their car feels like.... almost a daily occurrence to me...

Time and practice is the best option - no substitute.
Ideally you want to find a quiet (or private) area and practice in someone's car (family member) unless you have your own to practice in.
I tried rushing my test before going to uni and failed twice in 2 weeks (tests didn't have such long waiting lists then!).
4 years later (and a 5 figure student debt) I practiced all of the boring manoeuvres in my parents' drive in my brothers' car until I didn't have to think about it anymore.
If only I'd done that in the first place

hi iam new
it's okay i am 17 in feb and really want to staty driving and pass first time if there is anything things e.g books or anything i will be happy yo hear from you
Thanks
Rich
read the highway code and the driving books from the dsa.
trouble with driving is that you cant learn it from books. you have to do it. you also have to have no attitude when learning. just sit, listen, take notice and do what the instructor tells you.
i would never get a family member to teach you unless they are a qualified driving instructor. things change since your mum/dad/nan passed their test...
if you have an instructor like the guy i had for my hgv1 course then you need thick skin and know lots of rude words... if you didn't know the words you learnt a lot of them...
anon1011
10-11-2004, 10:34
i'd have to agree with slamdog that it isnt best learning from a family member - however it does help though , i passed about 7 months ago now and took a lesson every week from my driving instructor & also going out with my dad every 2nd night , this helped a lot as i could practise my manovers , finding the biting point ... generally getting used to 'driving'.
even though your only 16 try getting your dad to show you (in the drive way) how to get the biting point and that sort of stuff.

As your mum / dad / other to show you where they are on the car. Its seriously not hard. You'll do fine.

Just ask your instructor to show you, all the engine ones are basically the same, (identify relevant container then identify level, top up to max mark ) apart from oil, identify dipstick explain how you'd wipe the stick clean before checking level of oil against max min mark, then say where the oil goes to top. You won't have to touch anything under the bonnet, just point and explain.
Have a look on Ebay for under the bonnet pictures :) though all the bits you need to know may be a certain colour ( I know on a Corsa they are yellow )
I was asked about oil and powersteering on my test, was dreading getting the power steering question but managed to blag my way through by wittering on about steering feeling light and responsive when system is working correctly.
Have a look at This (http://www.2pass.co.uk/engine.htm) site :) may be of some use, and don't worry too much about that part of it :)
Lots of luck for your test btw :)
I didn't even go under the bonnet on my test. I was asked about checking the indicators worked without switching the ignition on, and about tyre tread depth.
The questions are the easiest part of the test, apart from the eye exam
*ahem* these are one post wonders in here, not even introduced themselves :S
hi, got my first practical on monday, 17/12/07, and im bricking it, to be honest iv been driving for years without a proper licence, i know it was wrong but thats why im doing it properly now, i took an inactive course of 10hrs and i have another 4hrs left and i have 2days for my test, my driving instructor said if i dont pass he will shag a donkey, (which im holding him too lol). my driving instrutor has giving me a practical test. (which i passed, and he said he was a bit stricter than the proper test). and he is giving me another test on sunday. the day before my test. so im hoping i pass it again and it will give me more confidence for my proper test on monday.
Don't condone driving without a license but well done for taking the test, and good luck, hope you pass... the less unlicensed ( uninsured ) drivers on the road the better.
For me it's not the fact your unlicensed, it's the fact your also uninsured that's my issue :( even if you have insurance on a provisional license it's invalid when you drive alone.
i know what your saying mate, i was insured and know that it was invalid, i just want to tell people not to do what i did as its not big and its not clever, it might cost a little fortune to go all the way but its worth it in the end
well i have my 2hr lesson at 2pm today, and like i said he is giving me another over the top test, to make sure my real test goes without a hitch. anyways ill post back tomorrow to tell u's what happened.

Like I say, lots of luck to ya :)
I never had any mock tests :( not sure why :D hope it all goes well
The test time will fly by :) I was only out for 35 minutes on mine.... didn't seem any time at all
done my mock test on my lesson, but he gave me 2 lol, the first mock i got 4 minors, the second test i got 1 minor but i f****d up on my parallel parking and he said it would of been a fail, but then i learned it without a hitch, tomorrow morning im having another mock test before the main test, ill report back tomorrow to see what happened.

Don't dwell on mistakes you made, just concentrate on geting it right for the test. I had some awful lessons before I went on to pass
Did you have to do all 4 manouvres for the mock or just two like the test?
If you do make a mistake on the test don't dwell, forget and concentrate on the next thing :)
I hit the kerb on my turn in road, thought i'd failed at the end, but no he let me off saying I was in full control of the car and tapped not hit :)
when i had my first mock test on my lesson, i did 2 manouvers, then when i did my 2nd mock test straight after i did the 1st, i did the other 2, so i did all 4 manouvers.
i passed my test :D, i only got 2 minors, there were 4 of us waiting for the test, anyways when i come back my instructor said there was only me that passed, i was a bit sad for them, but over the moon for me,
How did it all go? Did you have to identify things?
Booking mine this week, lookin to be likely mid/late Jan when I get in for. Not looking forward to it!
yeah i had to identify 2 show me tell me, which was basicly show me how you would check the oil and level, and the other was show me how you would check the lights, which i just operated and walked around the car, (which was a piece of p**s lol), but im not going to lie and say it was a walk in the park to pass coz it was'nt, its the worst nervracking thing iv ever done in my life lol, i mean its natural to get nerves on your driving test, 1 of the 3 who failed there test, she did a dangerous and when she got back to the test centre the examiner waved the womans instructor over and gave him a ticking off, so what she done i dont know but it ****ed the examiner off, all i can say about taking your test is just think it as another lesson and dont have them thoughts running in your mind saying you failed as you just might as you lose concentration.

Well - I went for my 3rd test today. I got there, and they told me I couldn't do it cause I hadn't booked that day?!! (I revised the test, from the 5th of feb to the 17th of Dec, but apparantly it never went through) - Anywho, I was pretty annoyed at this...Got home, checked to see if I could get a sooner date - and I got one tomorrow on the 18th!! :D
So - I am pretty chuffed about that, but I am still missing time off work which sucks, but I hope I pass this time!!
i feel for you mate, but im glad you got 1 straight away as i know that you just want to get it out of the way, if you dont mind me asking what did you fail on, on your first 2 for, i hope you pass this time m8

The second one was fine - I thought I passed but he failed me on mirror work - or lack of, specifically when changing speed. But everything else was fine! So, with that in mind, tomorrow, I should hopefully pass!
when you said that you had a booking for today, did you give them the conformation letter, i think i would of went off my head if i went there and they told me it had'nt went through, i dont know how you kept your cool lol
i think you will pass without question, you learn from mistakes, what time is your test, mine was at 10.24am which was a good time as the roads had calmed down, with kids going to school and people going to work ect.
i passed my test :D, i only got 2 minors, there were 4 of us waiting for the test, anyways when i come back my instructor said there was only me that passed, i was a bit sad for them, but over the moon for me,
Absolutely fantastic! well done :D passing that test it's the best feeling ever.
I passed on my 5th go, it would of been 4th test, but the tyre burst 10 minutes to the end, found out that all I had to do was get back and bay park, i'd of passed with 4 minors, 5th test was a free retest and I passed with 6 minors. was so not expecting it... he was a quiet man and softly spoken, I was thinking about when I could get a next test for because I was certain i'd failed for touching the kerb, while he was wittering on and it didn't register, took a good few seconds... not ashamed to say I cried in front of my Instructor and Examiner.. never cried once when I was told i'd failed but couldn't stop when told I passed, was even asked if I wanted to drive home but was in no fit state, as soon as I stepped out the car I started shaking and didn't stop long after i'd got home
The morning didn't start out well, my test was at 9.30 so my Instructor said he'd pick me up at 8.30... managed to oversleep and didn't get out of bed until 8.15, not even time for a cup of tea and to brush my hair ( and having a waist length hair unbrushed isn't a cool look ) lesson before went well until I found out that the pernickity Examiner who failed me on my third test was working, luckily he took the lad that was waiting with me out ( who failed ) :D
Lots of luck to you Movinginthedark, bugger your test got cancelled...lots of it going on apparently.
there was at my test centre last week my instructor said, especially on the mornings with the ice not cleared up, they cancelled three mornings in a row, and im glad you got some sleep shelly as i only had about 2rs lmao, it is the best feeling passing its just getting passed the 2yrs without getting 6 points on your licence lol, iv heard somewhere the have put speeding points up to 6 points instead of 3, or they are doing it very shortly, and its quite easy getting caught going over the speed limit espesially when they catch you going 3 or 4mph over, (very easy), so be carefull new drivers!
I second that Jaymze, I recently regained my license after loosing it to speeding in my probation period. First three points was a red light incident, but that's another story...
I don't think they should change the number of points handed out for speeding, but I do think all drivers new and old should be put onto a 9 point scheme (three strikes and you're out).
I don't think the new drivers act is a good idea, I think all drivers should have the same amount of points, since so far as I've seen in my three and a half years on the road, experienced drivers break just as many laws as new ones. It seems hardly fair to me that we're on seriously short ropes compared to their relatively long ones, many older people (50+ at a guess) didn't have half the test to pass that we did either.
I think all driving crimes should be seen as equal, and more people need to loose their license, or at least risk loosing it over their crimes.
Most people get a speeding ticket and think 'Bugger... another £60 gone', and continue at their pace, but I tell you one thing, nothing nails the DON'T SPEED message home more than loosing your license (or having an accident related to speeding).
If more people actually feared loosing their license, they'd slow the hell down. I certainly have after the headache it caused me to loose my license.
well said mate, did you have to do an extended retest to get it back or just a normal test, its just that i got a m8 and he is doing his test properly, but he had a bad driving career in his youth, but he doesnt know if he has to do an extended test or not, would it be on his counterpart, but he has booked in for his test on a normal test and he has his date, but i told him that i dont know if they would give him his date if they knew, but do the test centre know if you need and extended retest or not, (if you know what i mean lol) he has never held a full licence before
Nope, I did the standard test. The test booking guy was aware that I was retaking, and he had to make adjustments to my details for it (something to do with flagging my license as 'allowed to retest again' or something), but he didn't prevent me from taking a regular test or say I had to do an extended one.
If your mate's managed to book a regular test, I expect that's enough, since he wouldn't have been allowed to book it if he needed an extended I reckon.
The test centre don't officially know any of your background, or if they do, they don't let on, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out why each person is there.
Or at least it wouldn't have when I rolled up on my own, in my car, got out and put L plates on it, then went into the waiting room to take a test.
And then after I passed, I took the L plates off again, and drove off.
And if anyone thinks that's cheeky, take a look around at the amount of other people speeding, using phones, flouting the highway code, etc etc, and not getting caught. That's what sucks if you ask me.
In an evangelic way, if it took loosing my license to get me to slow down, then I'm glad I lost it, because I don't have to envy the people with patients to drive in the slow lane anymore, since I'm with them.

My driving instructor gave me some words of advise on the way home. If it's me or the cat, take the cat. I got 5 minors overall but I don't know how many you are allowed to have before you fail. On the way home it felt so weird sitting in the passager's seat and getting to see what your driving instructor drives like.

Yup, I argued with my Instructor about hitting Animals :D I said it would be worth failing a test if I had to brake to avoid running one over but he reckoned I was mental... "Always always sacrifice the Animal" he said, he knew I'm an Animal lover and always went on about Cats being vermin
Know what you mean about watching your Instructor drive, mine was speeding on the way home, when I pointed it out he said "You've passed now so i'm not in tutor mode" then I got a lecture about the new drivers act.. "don't speed blah blah, 6 points and all that hard work" I was like "Yeah, but your not in tutor mode now" :D

Strike me up numerous pheasants, a rabbit, a squirrel and a baby dear (although the latter got up and ran off after smashing up the front of my motor, fecking thing) ;). Don't swerve, just brake as hard as you can and if you have to hit the fecking thing, just do it. Not worth risking sticking your car in a ditch/hedge and doing injury to yourself or someone else over a non-highway-code-reading mammal :)
