View Full Version : Is 3 really necessary?

Ok, just checking out http://www.three.co.uk for details for the new video messaging mobile service. And what can I say? Who needs such s*ite?

£60 or £99 a month? Pay as you go with video messaging at 50p per minute? This is just stupid! If you want to see someone, get off your lazy ass and go see them. Video calls and messaging is the biggest load of boo-boo that the mobile market has come up with so far. Did they not get the idea when picture messaging was such a failure? Who is *realistically* going to use this? I think they are doomed to failure.

Also, the phones that you need for this service are enormous, very heavy and damn ugly too.

Get real 3.

Michael.

would you rather they just didn't bother developing mobile phones then?

it's too expensive an not very viable at the mo i admit, but give it 2 years and every phone will be 3G.

the technology is very impressive and i'm sure it will become one of those "how did i live without" things in the future.
i can think of hundreds of advantages from having video calls and this sort of thing has been around in Japan for a good year or so now and is very popular. there is no doubting it will take off as soon as prices become more sensible.

you'll be eating your words i'm sure mrochester when you can get one of these things free and video calls cost what voice calls cost today.

I was quite happy with Super Mario Bros. on the NES!!

My maths teacher has one and she says she'd sell it to me. and wanted to get rid of it. It can record, jumpy I might add, video which s kinda impressive...

I'll get one when the right one comes about, and the price of the service drops...

Yeah, I'm one of those peeps who would say that older games that don't look as great on screen are generally more enjoyable to play.

3G may be impressive but I can't imagine any situation where someone needs to make a video call where a standard voice call or text message would do... I should imagine that when prices come down it's gonne be very popular with teenies who will call people for no reason and waste their money just for the novelty of being able to see the other person. Some kids aren't even over the novelty of mobile phones themselves; many a time I have witnessed one child call another on the same bus and have about a 1 minute conversation! It's stoopid!

3G looks great, and I think it's amazing it actually works. Will make a lot of people lives a lot easier with data calls etc but I think for the average user it doesn't currenty offer any benifit for the price.

When the prices drop then i'm sure they'll be great and i'll probably get one eventually. But only if call charges decrease, and they can rival o2's 300 free txts/wap - oh and the phones are built like bricks :s

Yes, I'm one for slim, light weight phones and was shocked when I popped into my local Link and saw the beasts required for 3G sitting there!

if you can see the person your talking to its more difficult for them to lie and get away with it

Hey, don't knock it! Those kiddies are paying my wages at the moment!

For those who don't know, I work for Orange as a Systems Engineer supporting the platforms which charge for prepay calls in real time (amongst other platforms - I have about 50 to worry about, all carrying subscriber traffic).

Cheers,
Stephen

Happy meal? I'd probably own MacDonalds by now! :p

That question and "How can I get free calls?" (you can't - I pay for mine same as you guys do) have to be the most commonly asked questions I get.

Cheers,
Stephen

They're now developing 4G in Japan I believe. You know what'll happen, 3G will set off become popular, then 4G will be introduced and make 3G obsolete! Such is the way of progress!

What does 4G do then that 3G doesn't?

Now, what does it really do?

danielctull

I haven't heard of 4G, but I can't imagine it'll come around any time soon. The major changes (ie 1G-2G and 2G-3G) have always had more than about 5 years between them. Of course there have been upgrades in the systems, but not a whole jump within 2 years, surely?

Developing it means that its still far down the line yet, so no need to worry about it replacing 3G as soon as its fully phased into Europe.

Tbh i also think 4G won't be here for a while since so much money has been invested in the development of 3G it would be a huge waste of money to simply replace it with new technology!

Its the same with everything.

THe technology we`ll be using in about 5 years time is probably all already made but its not good business sense to release it now when you can milk the punters for more

/me wonders what the fastest CPU Intel have have actually produced atm but won't release in order to milk the market

Probably the Itanium 2

It is released, but costs a fortune & isnt available widespread.

Werent intel supposed to have ahd a 3ghz chip running early last year in the r and d department,

Certain markets are really fast moving cpu`s being one of them.

I have a friend who is working at M$ and he said that they were beta testing office 2006

it's a bit off the subject but, i think it was xbitlabs.com that went on a tour of one of intels labs. there was a picture of some test rig that had a 10ghz processor running with normal air cooling. they showed it's frequency on one of those oscilloscopes. it would have only been a test setup and i doubt it would have run doom3, but never the less it shows you what sort of stuff they have. that was a good year or so ago as well.

picture messaging

Picture messaging has been a success so far and its only a new technology. Most phones on the market soon will have a camera in built or certainl ya camera option.

The only problem comes when my friend takes a picture with his sharp vodafone live phone and sends it to my T68i. Of course my T68i screen is smaller and lower res and has to squash the picture on the screen making it blurry... d'oh!
