View Full Version : Slow Drivers, Fast Cars

What is it with people who spend 100k or more on a really fast car and then drive it like an old lady?
Tonight, my friend and I were out cruisin' when we see this sweet lookin' Porshe 911 Carrera 4. Now by this time we had decided to head out towards the airport for some unknown reason, which just so happened to be the same direction the Porka was going. As we got to the dual-carriageway after the 10 minute drive through town, I decided to try to overtake up the inside just to see how the driver would react (most drivers floor it and leave me in the dust). In my little car, I managed to easily fly past this amazing piece of German technology. I pulled back in front of him and went through the next roundabout. As I expected, I saw him race out of the roundabout and soar past me and cut back in front. I don't really know what possessed me but as he pulled back into the left in front of me, I found myself dropping the car into 3rd and flooring it again, once more zooming past this 911. What kind of car was I driving, I hear you ask.
A standard (apart from a set of alloys) 1.2 litre Renault Clio Oasis. My car has trouble staying at 60mph on the slightest of hills when there are 4 people in the car.
This other guy's car could have ripped me to shreds if he had wanted. But yet he drove like an old woman. The worst part is that I realised, during the whole time I was overtaking him (twice) I did not go over the speed limit once. And from what I saw, the driver did not have grey hair, false teeth or a zimmer frame. I really do not see the point in spending so much money on a car like that and then letting people in a car that cost £850 and has a pathetic 1200cc engine humiliate you on the roads.

I'm not trying to say he has to prove himself at every turn, I just don't see why people who spend so much money on a car like that drive like they're going to collect their pension.
From what I have gathered, the majority of people buy a Porsche because of the performance. Let's face it, they are not the most refined or practical cars ever, but they do go very very fast. If he isn't bothered about the speed, why not save himself a load of money and go for a Merc/Jag/Beemer or whatever? He'd get much more for much less money, simply because the Porka's performance is the major factor in its pricing.
I know that jealousy is probably playing a slight part in this rant, but I hate seeing cars that have been designed with performance in mind, and that performance not being put to use.

Hehehe points for originality, but you can keep Gillian Taylforth, and the bird in the passenger seat had greyish hair and looked about 60, so you can have her as well.
Also, if I was Neil Lennon, I'd be too worried that someone might try and run me off the road to be driving that slow.
He did look like a rich git, but apparently no sign of anything he'd be able to log on to Kustom with.

For all you know the guy might already have 9 points and doesn't want to risk getting caught putting the foot down.
Or maybe he just didn't see the point in challenging you - I mean in honesty, a Porsche wouldn't even break a sweat outrunning 1.2 Renault...

He wouldn't have to risk his license as I said the fastest I went the whole time was well within the speed limit.

yeh but if you were in a 911 and you *really* wanted to show off, would you stop accelerating? :)

If I had 9 points on my license and was paranoid about being pulled over, yes.
There's a time and place for driving fast. I don't know the road your talking about but maybe it's not that much fun. The guy has nothing to prove in town. But maybe on a decent road up through the countryside he lets rip a bit. I usually drive at normal speeds through town and built up areas and then let rip when I get on a twisty country raod that's a bit more of a challenge. Anybody can drive fast in a straight line.
ps, not a porshe owner, just a 2.0 Honda Accord.

Take your point totally, though it works the other way as well. I don't have a 911 mind you but my wee motor can fairly shift.
The other day I was driving in the Fairlie to West Kilbride direction (for those of you who are local) - it's a 60 limit and I had four cars in front of me barely doing 40 (which is VERY annoying) so as I got onto a staight bit I floored it and passed the lot of them very easily and very quickly only for the a$$hole in the Fiat Uno coming the other way to flash me and produce a w@nker salute! Why?
Before passing judgement, bear in mind that I was well into my own side of the road by a factor of about a quarter of a mile (!!!) before he was close enough to gesticulate! I just laughed at him as he passed by....
Point is that this guy obvioulsy has a major chip on his shoulder concerning people in fast motors, cos he and everybody else on that stretch of road was in absolutely no danger. Let's face it I'm not going to have a head on collision with anybody just to show off that my car can shift!
Not that I'm suggesting that you are of the same persuasion da_rebel, but maybe there was a reason he didn't feel the need to drive fast. As you said "the bird in the passenger seat had greyish hair and looked about 60".
Maybe it was his mother? - I wouldn't want to give my old dear a heart attack while I was driving (my bird is a different kettle of fish though...!)
Just my 2 bob.

Just a rant I've had with everyone as we go down the Bognor to Chichester road (for any that know it), old people travel 40mph down it (60 limit). Then they go and do 40 in the 30mph area.
Also going the other way, people who overtake me as i go 30 up to the 60 sign, because you can't go past 30 till you get past that sign  Just pee's me off that they can't wait, of course about 1/2 mile I catch up with them after travelling 60, and they're travelling at 40/50... ARGH

Just to cheer you up, I reported an old guy for "careless and inconsiderate driving" for doing that to me the other day. I hope they take his licence off him, never argue with a bobby in a bad mood! :D
