Im currently with tescos insurance under my mums name w00p :) , on a fiesta mk3 1.3
U reckon its wise to keep sucking money from my parents to pay for most of the insurance, or u hink i shud start looking to pay on my own to save for no claims etc.
Been driving for like 4 - 5 months now fun. ;]
also ill tell you whats funny , i get my petrol payed for sometimes as long as i carry out 3 - 4 taxi runs forthe family ! \o/
I have been considering the same thing (I am 19) but by researching various prices I have discovered that until 21 it is so expensive on any car to insure a new driver that you would be best to stick on your parents policy.
Just out of interest are there any people who are under 21 insured under your own name and if so what are your costs for insurance and cars?
All of this assumes you are not going to have an accident and lose your parents their no claims bonus which could be very expensive!

20 , Citroen Xsara VTR Coupe, 1700 quid fully comp on my own name with two years no claims.
Up for renewal next month, hope it drops a bit - wee bit steep just now ;)
Should have seen the quote on the VTS model when I was 19 - was gonna cost over 3 grand to insure !

18, Fiat Punto 55SX (thats 1.1 with leccy windows and some nice other features).
I have 3rd party fire and theft for £101.66 a month. I was quoted about £1100 for the year, but couldn't afford it in one lump sum...
Love my little punto, which is really big inside :D Got my test booked for start of next month, so that insurance will come down (hopefully) next year as its for a provisional atm.
Ive been first driver on my various cars since i got my license.
Started out on a clio 1.2, that cost £1800 fully comp.
Then i got another brand new clio at 19, that was about £1400 fully comp.
Just got a bmw 325ci sport convertible, thats cost me £600 fully comp from now till september.
I do live in london though, so premiums are always going to be slightly higher

It's well worth getting no claims bonus ASAP (assuming you don't drive like a tit and you're not very likely to crash).
My history on my Renault 5 1.4 all TPFT
Age 18, 0 years no claims £850
Age 20, 1 year no claims £400
Age 21, 2 years no claims £250 inc home start breakdown cover (£40)
Now ages 22 with 3 years no claims I've been quoted £1500 fully comp on this little beauty. All I need to do now is pass me final Uni exams so I can start me job and start the repayments
:D.
I've got a friend who's been on his mums insurance since he passed and now he's really struggling to get insured on anything even vaguely powerful.
Aren't a lot of the drops you saw in your insurance due to age since supposedly you are much much safer when over 21?
I personally think that I should stay on my parents insurance until 21 and then start building up my own no claims although your example makes me think twice about this plan.
Very nice car you have.

No claims makes a massive difference. Also if you passed ur test less than a year ago do the Pass Plus course. It costs around £100 to do but knocked £200 off my 1st insurance quote. Oh and it makes you a better driver (not like we care about that sorta thing). A 21 yr old m8 is still struggling to get quotes below £700 on 1.2 cars.
Haven't bought the Alfa yet. Alas stuck with me R5 for a few more weeks though an old biddy crashed into me so I've got a brand new 1.2 Corsa coutesy car until my claims cheque comes through the post. That should cover 1st year insurance nicely.

Ive got a little Ford Fiesta 1.1 C reg which i have im my mums insurance (im 18) which costs about £200 - I did a quote with tesco for my self which came to £1250  Which i just can not afford at the mo (at college).
When i finish college and get a full time job i will be going on my own insurance - i think IIRC the price droped to about £950 after 1 years no claims

I'm paying £770 a year for my '00 1.6 Astra Club (aircon, leccy stuffs). I'll be 27 in July.
Next year will be fun what with recent little bumps. 8 years driving, not a claim. Now two in the space of 6 months.

Age: 20
Car: Renault Clio 1.2
Fully Comp Insurance: £1250
Company: Swinton
obviously does make a diff :D
I got a new clio 1.4s on an X plate with a years free ins (me 21yo at the time). I then got quote and cos I stayed with renault insurance they gave me a 5 NCD equivalent and so the following year was £776 when I was 22, then I hit 23 and I got a massive drop, £440!!! Am 24 this coming week, insurance is due in Nov. and I hope it drops again, I may get a new car anyway as its up for MOT then and its not gonna pass on a few things I think as its done 33,000 miles already (damn communiting!)

my last car passed its mot before if got the new one , n plate scort 76 thousand miles and fully serviced , 33k aint even broke in yet , but for the frenchies i would say replace all rubber and plastics when the car is 3 and its like new all over again.
any one whom doesnt get a car serviced is daft , even with a banger , remember theres no replay or cheat to get your life back in the real life of motoring and being skint is better than being burned alive.

I used to do 60,000 a year. Drove a diesel Clio, was 2 years old with 104,000 on the clock. I didn't have the car from new.
Only problems I had with it were clutch at 60,000 and the gearbox died at 99,500. Other that that, I had zero problems.
Serviced every 6,000 miles, which was every 5 or 6 weeks.
