Does anyone know a good insurance company that would insure my (will be 20 with 1yr no claims) on either a Saxo VTS or a Peugeot 106 GTi?

Try Elephant.co.uk.
Did me and my pals good deals - saved me £300 from my renewal quote....

Bare with them - the web site is a bit slow to say the least but they are well worth it!

You might also wanna try C.I.S (http://www.cis.co.uk/) (Coop Insurance Services). Now don't laugh :D I've been with them for quite a few years now, and they were the only ones (of those I tried) who would touch my imported (by Mitsubishi themselves) Mitsubishi Legnum (Galant) VR4.
It's always advisable to shop around a bit before making a final decision, and CIS as worthy of a look-see as any other car insurance company ;)
Another you might like t' try a quote from is the company for which Quentin Wilson does the TV commercial which goes something like... "Stay claim-free for 5 years, and you'll get your first years' premium back... in full" - namely Insure.co.uk (http://www.insure.co.uk/) :)
Ive been quoted no less than £1596 for a 1.4 Golf.
Decided to say sod insurance and buy the car I want and take it off the road for a few months while I work on it as a project - hopefully saving money up for insurance later in the year.

shop about , yes - but stick to a name you know.
I bought insurance through a small broker when I started driving - had to pay up front 800 quid (when you're 17 they wont let you pay in instalments) and then the firm went bust a month later.
I *eventually* got a chunk of the money back through some insurance pool that is there to protect consumers, but the fright of being told that you have 7 days to 'make new arrangements' and the money that I lost means that I would be wary of going through a smaller insurance company again. Doesn't mean they're all bad - far from it - but just something to watch out for.
I'm with directline now - maybe a few quid more expensive , but I know they'll be about tomorrow, and I've heard they're reasonable to deal with in a claim situation.
I heard Adrian Flux are quite good too, might be worth looking at.

Norwich Union Direct were pretty good with my old car but put the price up so i changed. now with Tesco and they have been by far the cheapest for me for the last 2 years.
i know a number of friends also with Tesco because they are the cheapest around.
Tescos have been great for me so far, ive been driving a clio for 4 years, so have a good ncb, but still, ive been quoted £700 for a year on my new bmw 318i convertible, which sounds pretty reasonable to me!

Yeah...Tesco's are great.....They insure me in my new BMW 320Ci Convertible for under £500. And that includes me having 9 points!!!!!!!
They were £100 cheaper than next best quote.
Make sure you are comparing like-for-like when shopping around (ie hire car/business usage/excess etc).
IB.
I also agree Tesco are good although when I shopped around for insurance last month I found AXA to be £50 cheaper so try them aswell.
people i kow have only had good experiences with www.liverpool-victoria.co.uk and it only takes 30 seconds to get an online quote, no arsing around. £1500 for me (19 y/o, no NCB) on a focus 1.8... that's half what most people would charge, including tesco, cis, etc.
the quick quotes thing wouldnt give me quotes on any of the cars I'm likly to get.

I'm with Tesco now, they are not too bad. I just don't know how much they will insure the 106 GTi I so want! I will keep looking, I heard Adrian Flux are quite good?

Adrian Flux give very competitive quotes for high risk drivers but are very unhelpful when you need to make a claim.
A friend of mine got a quote off em for his 106 GiT aged 21 with 1 years no claims around £2200 fully comp. Not the most insurance friendly car.
Footnote:
He sold it 6 months later after things kept on breaking. under 30000 miles with FSH and needed a new clutch and engine rebuilt. Just to warn ya.

Damn... thats the car I'm looking to buy now! Why are they so costly to insure, the Saxo VTS is cheaper and quicker...

Well a lot of em do get crashed as there's quite severe back off oversteer and it catches a lot of people out. That and the fact that it actively encourages you to drive like a hooligan.
Best thing to do is give Adrian Flux a ring for a quote 08700 777888 and see what they quote you.
