well I did it and now it's deffiently quieter. some what too quiet. I swapped over the standard 40mm fan for another Sunon 40mm fan I had lying around on my desk and now when you start the PC the fan spins with a nice bit of air coming out, but then stops. After several hours of generals the fan still isn't spinning and there's no bad smells or large heat buildup on the side of the case. Just wondering if this is at all safe or should I solder the fan up to the 7volts?

cheers

Are you sure its not moving , there is a temperature sensor which slows it down when the air flow isnt required .

yeah. i cut that poxy grill off too. so you can see the fan isn't spinning.
but just after posting the above I started a game of generals and almost at the end of it the PC crashed/locked up. So I've wired the original one back in.

Looks like either you have an iffy fan or it was wired incorrectly

There is a thread on sudhian forums by ultim8pc with an excellent guide with great pics :)

since I didnt have any spare 40mm fans around, I removed the one from the northbridge and did a quick swap.

I then cut a small hole in the top of the PSU so I could take the 3pin wire to one of the 3 pin headers on the mobo, allowing the mobo to control the speed depending on the CPU temp.

seems to be working fine and fairly quiet ;)

I was thinking of doing that for my GPU fan. it's not warm when in windows. but will cook if I game. so I'll rig up somethign like that
