I've sen this done a few times and also looked at Gordy's article on Hexus. What I want to know before I start is will I gain anything by swapping the 80mm fan in my PSU for a papst silent?

I've sorted everything else out in the case now and the loudest thing is my PSU fan. Given that it's a Zalman 300W quiet I'm pretty chuffed but of course I'd like to lose that as well if possible.

So, 1st, has anybody done this mod with this PSU? If not, any thoughts as to whether the 20CFM from the PAPST will be enough to keep the PSU cool?

I currently have case temps of around 27/28 degrees and a CPU temp of 45 degrees with my water kit and fairly big O/C. I'm not concerned about the CPU and case temps rising by 5/6 degrees, this shouldn't be a problem.

Conan, I didn't notice this thread so sorry for the late answer!

I don't think you'll get any benefit from swapping the Zalman PSU fan for the Papst.

The main reason the Papst is so quiet is that it's so slow. The speed of the Zalman PSU fan when cool is probably very similar to the Papst so no difference.

There is a risk in changing fans. When the Zalman starts up, it is slowing it's fan down but if you change it for the Papst it will apply less voltage to the Papst which means it may not even start! It will certainly be even quieter but I don't notice my Zalman as it is.

I think you'll have to wait until the fanless PSU is available to solve your problem completely:D

Thanks Alan, I hadn't considered the fan startup problem. I'll hang fire for now and maybe look at one of those fanless PSU's as you say:)
