http://freelayouts.com/templates/display/templates
If you wanted to get a head start and if your new to web design, it is advisable to make your own or have one made professionally though (i hate template sites..)
You after a commercial or personal site and want to make it yourself or get someone to do it for you?
If you want to learn yourself then do you have hosting, a domain and the basic know how?
I'll happily give you a poke in the right direction whichever way your looking at!

I've been thinking of getting me own website - just to host pics and the odd file or two, but I ain't got the first clue about design, +/or adding various bits 'n' pieces (folders/buttons/links etc)
So how much would it cost to have someone design a (very basic) front page for a new website then?

how much you got :D  ;)
Seriously, as long as its not for commercial use I (or anybody else here for that matter) could probably knock something together for a small fee/gift/pint.
If you can download and instal the dreamweaver MX trial and have a play, you'll probably find its not all that different from using a word procesor (at the basic level, I'd better not put myself out of a job :))
Post up what sort of things you'd be looking for to give us a better idea.
cheers

Good show Alistair :D
But tbh.. I don't know where to start? I haven't really given it much thought as of yet... it was only this thread got me thinkin' on it
My site won't be used for/based on anything in particular - you know... have a common theme or anything like that. I just want a nice lookin' page - nothing too flash, with somewhere to store any pics I might have/take in the future, maybe the odd folder (or six!) where I can upload the odd file or two (games demos/mods/patches, up-to-date drivers etc) so my sons can grab em (and save me having to buy CDR's to burn for em :p), etc etc.
So basically... it's mainly gonna be used as somewhere to store files and pics. Any ideas to get me started? If I could get somebody to design just a very basic page for a start, I even might get ideas of my own (and completely ruin it :p) ;)
PM me if you wanna do anything further... :)
It'll cost you bugger all if its nice and simple. I can knock up something basic in an evening...
All I'll need is your content (word doc or something) and an idea of what kinda colour scheme you'd want etc...
I'd probably knock up an image in photoshop to give you an idea before actually coding anything :) (or if you're good with gfx then you can do the same :))
lemme know :)
As for hosting, not really my area, though I know Active on ochw is offering reasonably priced webhosting at the moment :)
if you are looking for an image gallery the free script i'm using is pretty cool and is as easy to install as uploading the files and follow the install instructions....
you can see it over @ http://photos.ciqala.com
you can download it from...
http://www.4homepages.de/4images/download.php
(requires a web host account with php/mysql)
