View Full Version : would this eliminate hd noise?
Been looking at the silent drive bay but came across this and was wondering if anyone know if this would cut down on the noise of the hd?

um.. u got anything else about it.. it looks like a metal / alu case but without any details of whats inside or spex then i suppose if its a sealed unit then its bound to be of some use.. I've used the coolermaster hdd coolers that have more of a cooling effect than soise reduction and that looks simular in some ways.. however the fan supplied just vibrated so much that i had to ditch both units and go for silent drives (available here at kustom)..
pc's on 24/7 with no apparent probs..

See/read the full spec list here (http://www.overclock.co.uk/customer/product.php?productid=16542&cat=256&page=1) Fade - t' see what ye make of it ;)
but did you have drive rails fade as I do and they are said to not be that great due to the rails being plastic so it does not transfer heat away from the drive bay?

And a big OOOOoooooops it was too  Sorry Jack (& Co) :)
Couzo, i cant see how this hard drive rack will prevent noise mate,
a) it has a 40mm fan, which will probably make more noise than the hard drive itself.
b)As far as im aware Hard drive racks arent designed to reduce noise, but to 'protect' data, and make it it more mobile
If you want a silent hard drive, may i recommend any hard drive which has fluid bearings. Seagate Baracuda's ATA IV range encorporates this into their drives, and this technology is very affordable compared to 5 years ago.
I can testify to that. Since getting my Barricuda, hard drive noise is not only not an issue, but non-existent.!
I'm using silent drives on all my hdds 2x 5400's and one 7000 maxtor. the latter is using fluid bearings but its the damn clicks that got to me, now with the enclosures thats gone.. except late at night when music isnt playing.. I've tryed to keep my case as quiet as pos but having a window and a badly stuck bit of perspex sint doing me any favors. That drive at overclock looks simular to the coolermaster ones that i used to have, im sure one may keep ur drive nice and cool but any more may just cause loads of vibrations thru the case and spoil the intended purpose. I dont have rails in my case, cases that do, like chieftech i understand that the heat cannot dissapate from the hdds as well, You could allways mod the enclosure itself and hack open the top and somehow get the excess heat off using ramsinks. tho thats a lot of finger crossing hopefuls..
I've seen others / yrs ago that were 5 1/4 frames that had a elastic center that the hdd would sit in, thus redusing the vibrations from the spinning but still getting the clicks..
I'd try and recomend another way of fitting the hdd but they like to be kept flat, or run risk of the head crashing..
You could try and source some metal rails.. although there will still be a smaller surface area you'll still get some heat transfer. Whats ur case ambient temp? / is it alu? and what gathers heat in ur pc?
My pc is more of a server. 3x hdds, 2x dvd/cdburner gforce3, amd 1Ghz (unclocked) with a taisol bitchin hsf and some other less heat related things.. I use a i-storm in the frount of the case thats although old does the job damn well + extremly quiet. then 1x papsa 80mm (bottom frount) then 1xpapsa 80mm out (top back) and an exaust blower plus whatevers on the quietpc 400w psu. (which isnt as quiet as i would like)
ambient case temps / checking from bios are norm 21 - 25° C with the chip at 35 - 41° C.
wheres ur rig located? try putting some papers under it to try and reduce vibrations.. can be cheaper than case matting.
I'll have a look over the net and see if theres any mods that eliminate hdd noise on rail mounted units.
bak laters..

my maxtor has a fluid barrings in it??? Can you reccomend any other items to make them more quiet?
whats in santas sack?!?
found this article about various sound absorbing material.
frostytech (http://www.frostytech.com/zerosound.cfm)
then i found some metal drive rails.. dunno if they'd fit ur case tho.

ps. still looking but need beer so will post bak laterz
those drive rails look good shame they are in the us
Couzo, might be worth trying some of these, Graeme is getting the fan mounts in, not sure of the hard drive mounts. If he is then they look good from the reviews.

I noticed these on some site mentioned in these forums..
heres a snippet.. / page mentioning those wierd hdd mounts i mentioned earlier.

I assume you hadn't noticed O Chief, that the last post in this thread prior to yours today is dated 21-03-2003
Having said that... you must've had to dig back through a helluva lot of other posts to find this one

Hi there,
I have 2 36gig raptors (10,000rpm) running in raid and the noise was horrid. First of all I had the loud whine sounding like 2 60mm fans at full blast and then the access noise, hideously loud clicking.
However, I have solved that. Got 2 Silentmaxx HDD enclosures. At 35 quid for each one they are far from cheap. I also got some Akasa Paxmate foam stuff to modify the HDD enclosures a bit eg: completely seal off the the HDD inside, pretty much like a vacuum now. And the large SA of the aluminium HDD enclores helps to cool the ultra hot raptors down!
Can't hear the whine anymore, and accessing is about 1/4 as loud as it used to be, even less tbh. Now means the loudest thing in my case is the PSU electrical hummmmm hummm.
