View Full Version : Silencing a Coolermaster ATC500

Hi guys, I'm new on the forum, please be gentle :)
I have an ATC500 case from Coolermaster, a Athlon 2700, Radeon 9700Pro, 1Gb RAM DDR400mhz and an IBM 120Gb 7200 180GXP. I want to make it silent (this week's project). The MB is a new Asus Nforce II
Its currently using a Powerman 'Quiet' PSU (yeah right), stock fans on the heatsink, blowhole and front sucker. I'm want to change everything that makes a noise... what do you suggest? Unfortunately I can't put the disk in a quiet disk thingy as the two 5" bays are full (DVD and CDRW)
I therefore (unless you disagree) need cooling for:
Radeon 9700Pro
Northbridge
CPU (Heatsink & Fan)
Top blowhole
Sucky Hole at front
Quiet PSU
The CPU cooling cannot be too tall, because there is limited clearance underneath the PSU.
Oh, and the stuff must come from Kustom . There's no price limit, but I don't want to be getting out my dremel or soldering iron!
Cheers
7 volt all your fans an see if its bearable :)

Radeon 9700Pro

This will fit the Redeon Pro but ask Graeme if he can get hold of the "A" version which has greater clearance and means you won't have to prise more than one heatsink from your card.
Northbridge

CPU (Heatsink & Fan)

Will just require careful positioning of fan due to lack of clearance.
Top blowhole
Sucky Hole at front
http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/images/casecool/smart2b.jpg or Kustom Quiet LED fans for blooooness
Quiet PSU

All Antecs are quiet and great value. QuietPC and Zalman units are spot on too.

Thanks for your replies guys... hand on wallet, gulp.
Will I need to put a fan over the flower, because of the proximity of the blowhole? (Its directly over it)
What fans do you recommend? Panaflo's seem to be well regarding, In fact, I've just ordered one for my shuttle.
What the hell is that on the Radeon?

Take a look on the Kustom website under "Silent stuff". It a passive heatpipe heatsink and it's bloomin' great.
You will probably still need the fan for the flower, unless you have very good case flow. That's a hot CPU you got there.
I'd definitely install it and just leave it on lowest setting.

The flower wont fit the cm500 unfortunatly :(

Even with the fan mounted beside the flower so it blows across the fins?
Blimey, must be REALLY low clearance cos the flowers on their own aren't much taller than a standard Intel HSF.

Gordy would this fit in a CM500?

The clearance underneath the PSU is about 50mm, I believe the Flower is near 70mm high? I may need to mount it on the CPU after sliding the MB tray in, which will be awkward.
I may need to think about a taller and easier Coolermaster case.
Clearance on the cm500 is about the taisol hsf level , we are talking very limited , its the major drawback about the case. They should have made it matx instead of full atx.
Dont know the dimensions of that water cooling kit to be sure soz :(

the flower cooler wont fit.. you could try an Akasa 2Qu silvermountain 2 cooler, they DO fit OK (i had one) and are fairly quiet, and cool quite well :D

whoah sorry Goonerman, didnt respond - yep, thats a good low profile cooler :)
the prosilence power supplies are great at Kustom - could go for a totally fanless one, or the papst fan cooled one, both look great (im getting a PCS350 as soon as they are in stock).
for fans, just get papst.
-------------
for a P4, i would think *most likely* a Zalman 7000CU would fit.

watercooling ANY CM case is an achivement, an cm 500- not a chance unless it's external.

Well I've done it, bought an Akasa 2Qu silvermountain 2 cooler, an Antec 430, and a vantec fan, oh and some artic gloop. Already have a couple of papsts, so didn't need to buy those.
Now to find what's left that's loud, probably the 9700Pro, I'll see if it bothers me first before further spending.
Thanks for all your advice guys, I'll let you know how I get on.

have you got a 60mm papst? you could fit it to the CPU heatsink - i would think that would work well.
nice cases arent they :D

Unfortunately the Akasa 2Qu silvermountain didn't fit in the case, I needed another 10mm to get it to fit. I left off the fan, and relied on the fan on the PSU and the case (just above the CPU), but the CPU hit 90C- bit hot!
It may fit on other motherboards though, just depends on the placement of the CPU socket, mine just banged on the bottom of the PSU. I've gone back to the coolermaster heatsink, and may put a different fan on it.

How high (inc. the fan) is your Asaka as the case will only take a 50mm HSK&F max.

what motherboard are you using? a 2Qu is what is running at the moment, in my ATCs500 on a KR7a - but it also works on an NF7s

I'm using an Asus NForceII board - A7N8X Deluxe. Nice board. I've solved my problems now, I've just received a CM 201 and a Zalman 6000Cu from the guys at Kustom.
Now to move all of my stuff into it this evening and then I will have a CM500 going spare... ;)
Thanks for your help.
