Why o why must we suffer scripted mayhem with our web browsers? OK, advertising I have no problem with, I remember back when banner ads were it. Obviously someone wasnt getting enough click thoughs, so pop up ads were born.

Pop-ups invade your desktop, hide "secret" controller windows away from sight, god forbid you should close an ad, another 3 will appear! Full screen ads just take the micheal! I've abandoned one "free forum" provider recently due to excessive popups. Could they not have just got a little more inventive with their advertising banners, try some better artwork, or a better product? ;)

Get an ad-blocker I here you say. *Scurries off installs ad-blocker*. Omg look another site refuses to work correctly "You have a pop-up ad blocker installed, please try again". Arrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhh.

Ah well, I see we shall be rid of pop-up ads soon, a new kid is in town - the DHTML "I look and behave like a pop-up ad, but am not really, I'm part of the page".

If I want to buy your product I will, don't try to force it down my throat!!!!

that and spam ... I've just deleted my personal email address as it was just over-run with stupid rubbish that I'll never have any interest in.

Opened it the other day and had 595 mails, (form a week) and only two of them were actually personal, relevant mails !

I hate pop up's too! but the usual site's i'm on usualy hav ethe pop-up's scripted to open in the background behind the main window, it's still annoying but at least you don't need to read them when you close them!

But i hate the new "Admin alert" pop-up's that have started!! with the old html windows you could at least know who sent it so you can complain, but the admin alerts don't hold any originating IP addresses in them so they are as anonymouse as things can get on the interent.

I know i can just stop the messanger service but i got a few progs that need it for alerts!!

I'm on the 500 - 600 e-mails per week too! but since this in on my main Freeserve account i ain't go the option of just closing it down :(

I used to only get 200 -300 a week but i did a stupid thing...
I tried to unsubscribe from the e-mails!! that's a "red rag to a bull" to spammers!! my inbox suddenly doubled the next day!!

I've given up trying to unsubscribe! i now forward most of my incoming mail direct to the deleted folder!!

But I only get 3 or 4 interesting e-mails a week!!

why not set up a hotmail account to use when you sign up for things, that way you never need check it.
Then keep your personal e-mail address for people you want to hear from.
Or, if you have a domain registered where you receive all the emails, anytime you sign up for anything, use a different address, so for this forum use kustompcs@domainname.com
that way, if you get any spam addressed to kustompcs@domainname.com, or whatever your domain is, firstly you can block it b4 you get it if your isp suppors this, or in your mail client, and secondly you know who has sold your details on, so you know who to complain to.

The in built ad`s are the worse.

The register has been running ads for 3 and its annoying that it blocks half the page out and the close button is hard to find

i remember that,

My account went from having no spam to the point were I`m average about 50 emails a day 5 of which are things I`ve subscribed to.

I`m now in the process of moving all my important stuff over to my domain email.

I surf so many sites it's hard to keep track :p There are however some ppl building pop-up ad blocker "protection" into their products, ProBoards (http://www.proboards.com/) spring to mind. I've given up trying to find a "free" forum host with a sensible level of advertising now - I've built my own forum system

Email spam - I've pretty much sussed this now:-

Never unsubscribe to spam - it only adds you onto a "live" list for further spam
Never publish your email address on a web page, robots will find it
Check for your ISPs privacy policy, opt out of everything
Add *nospam* to your email addy when replying in NGs (eg walrus*nospam*@TheDomainIuse.com)
If you are required to use a email addy temporarily to get a download or similar, setup up a specific addy eg spam@TheDomainIuse.com, which is easily filtered later
Don't use hotmail, or any pure web based free email ;)

I've successfully reduced my spam mails to less than 10 per day combined across my 7-8 email addresses (don't ask, I *need* this many addys, honest :p ).

Ah - dead_one !

I always wondered why so many people had their email address saying Kustompcs@xyz... when they order from us !

Makes sense now :)

Proxomitron - stops popups and banners in IE. Works like a little proxy server on your PC. Works very well in my opinion. Just replaces the ads with a little red "Ad" link. If you want to view the ad, you click the little link on the page.

leeched from another forum but i dont thing the user will mind. The bloke who posted this is a thouroughly nice chap.

You know the webforms that require you to provide a valid e-mail address before downloading a file or accessing a page? The ones that *don't* require e-mail confirmation, and simply add you to an opt-out spam list?

Well, here's a couple of addresses for peeps to use in these forms:

tim_holman@hotmail.com
timh@cobwebsolutions.com

Timmy is an unrepentant spammer who refuses SpamCop reports and ignores all complaints (For gawds sake - who has a Hotmail address as their abuse contact!?!?!). Let's give the SoB a taste of his own medicine.

-Blacklaw

SOunds like the above addresses are as good as any for saving us from spamming ;)

ahem.. why has no one mentioned Mozilla? Hello! You get an awesome browser, AND a built in pop-up blocker (which works great) and you can block advert images (since often they come from a remote server). And on top of that you get Mozilla mail, which i've been using with my ntl account for a few weeks now with no regrets. :D

I use a hotmail address (I used to use a different one, but I had to abandon that one ages ago 'cos it was getting overloaded by spammers!)

The thing is, I never use it when signing up for downloads, I usually use something fake like "Don'tEmailMe@GetStuffed.com" or something like that, I don't put it on web pages, I check the hotmail options every so often to make sure MSN hasn't been sneakily turning those "share my e-mail address" options back on...

Basically, I use every trick in the book (and a few I made up on the spot) to avoid spam... And they STILL find me!!!!

How the heck can they do that?! Are they psychic or something?!

I've already had to block any e-mail address with aol.com, or netscape.com or excite.com at the end of it, as the spammers are rerouting their messages through them to make it look like it's coming from an innocent user's e-mail address...

Does anyone know how to track it back to the spammer's e-mail address? 'cos I've got a little program that can send up to 1000 copies of the message straight back at them! ;)

the whole spam thing with hotmail is a nightmare - everyone is having to use filtering with their hotmail account, and for some reason our emails are going straight into junk folders ... it's a real nuisance when we're trying to send order status messages or queries to people !

I think we gotta sort a disclaimer on the site about this...

I notice some US sites now don't allow contact through hotmail addresses , possibly for this reason? Seems drastic, but I see where they're coming from :)

Well, the spammer who was rerouting his messages to me through aol, netscape and excite has realised that I'm blocking them and has moved on to lycos.com addresses!

I'm now setting it to block everything except people I know (Don't worry, Graeme, that includes Kustom PCs addresses! :D )

This guy seems determined to get to me... Does anyone know how I can trace the messages back to him? 'cos when I find him, he's in for a nasty surprise!!
