hello all, i need all of your help on this one, i have a maxtor hdd its only a 13 gig (untill my new hdd comes) and im going to have them both in my new case.
The thing is is that u no u get that terrible whine of the hdd all of the time, i woundered which is the easiest way to silence it. Ive heared that you can just simply wrap it in some foam, im worried that because i allways leave my pc running heat issues will come in somewhere.

I need some help on how to silence it, maybee you have a home made method?

Thanks for the help

Butch:)

I'm sure Maxtor (as several other disk companies have done) have released some software that slows the drive down and quietens it a bit.

Might be worth having a look at the Maxtor site and see if the software is suitable for your model of drive.

Failing that, you could always line your case with sound absorbant material and hope that helps.

These are a very good idea, and they work well by all accounts I've heard.

yeh, i like the sounds of that sound proof drive bay box! the thing is that ill need 2 of them:( ill take a look on the mmaxtors site now, do you know if this makes any differance to the performance of the hdd??

Using the software will result in a small performance decrease in the drive, but unless you regularly do huge file transfers then I doubt you'll notice the difference.

Make your new drive a Seagate Barricuda IV or V then you won't have to put it in an enclosure - 'cos it's a very quiet fdrive (24dBA) Put the Maxtor in the enclosure 'cos I assume it's a 5,400rpm and then you won't have heat issues.

For drives that don't run too hot, the Silent Bay is amazing!

Butch, I'd recommend you get the exact model number for your Maxtor HDD and then go to the support part of their site and look for the techincal specs of your drive, before you go putting it in a Silent Enclosure.

I've got a 13.6Gb 7200rpm Maxtor, and I know mine runs too hot to go into one....

The requirements can be found at http://www.quietpc.com

I've got the same hdd, i think its a 80gb maxtor 9+ with the fluid concrete bearings and 8 mb cashe.. cost less than £100 on dabs.
I've slapped it into a silent drive enclosure and it seems fine.. I have allready had 2 silent drives for my other 2 fugitsu hdds and they have no probs..
about the software for the maxtor hdd where can i get it from? I've looked on their site and found nothing and i got no software with my hdd when i bought it.

will only get software with a harddrive if you buy it in retail packaging, most harddrives are supplied as oem.

2 reasons to buy seagate: (1) They're quiet, (2) you can get them from Kustom! :D

I also seem to remember Graeme saying they were the most reliable drives they'd used. I'm sure someone will correct me if not. But, if so, that'd be 3 reasons, so buy one! :D

Don't buy IBM HDDs.

Three reasons:

1) IBM have sold their HDD business to Hitatchi, for good or bad this turns out - It wouldn't be wise to buy one right now.

2) Current IBM drives are shocking. I've heard more stories of IBM drives failing, than any other make.

3) They so bloody noisy! And ain't cool, either!

thanks tom, i had a 30 gig ibm and they are soo loud, so i think that the vote is either a western digital or a seagate?

Kynoch

seagate are the quietest, i got a couple of western digi's and although they are quieter then most you can hear the read and writes easily.

I want to change the hard drive in my laptop, its a bit of an IBM screamer - wonder if seagate do 2.5" quiet drives :)

butch

hmmmm:confused: i dont know abe, sorry

Maybe not quite the same thing Abe, but I used t' buy 2.5" Seagates for me Amigas (A500+/A1200 etc) - mainly coz they had the smallest footprint, and could be squeezed into the interior far more easily than any other drive at the time, but I can't say as I really noticed/heard em either... other than when they first spun up ;)

Based on my past experiences... I'd hazard a guess that their newer versions will also be well up there wi' the best of em... both in terms of speed and noise :)

BTW... I mean "well up there" as in quiet... not well up there as in decibels :D

Theres nothing wrong with it, i'd just prefer it a little quieter, and would be nice to get a quieter one when I need more space.
