I think it needs a big shake up, the law is way too lenient on criminals.
And prisons are way too easy.
If you have money for a good lawyer, you can get away with anything, and you get much more preferential treatment from the courts.
The policy should be a minimum 1 yr jail term for any offence, regardless of 1st offence or circumstances etc
drugs should be re criminilised, and prisons should go back to how they were in the 50s or 60s, with criminals being treated as the scum that they are.
none of this giving the 17 yr old junkies holidays to make them pay for mugging an old granny.
none of this getting 6 months for murder and being out in 3, with a few weekends at home in between.
The laws a joke at the moment, and needs a govt who is willing to do what the majority of the population want, and toughen it up.
The problem with the CJ system is that people like you or I are not in charge of it! There's too many liberals out there who think that heroin addicts who commit burglary need TLC. They don't seem to understand that a surefire way to stop people re-offending is to lock them inb a room so they physically can't.
Oh and stop giving them sky-tv and stuff, if you treat them better in prison than they get at home it's no wonder they don't mind re-offending. Come on Mr Blair, see the light :D

the thing people forget, is that just being away from home isnt a deterrant for a lot of people.
in jails they get access to tv, better food than they get at home, drugs etc, and a lot of people they know in the same prison.
so its just a few months of holiday, and then back home up to the same things.
I suppose there is a vicious circle, cos once they've been inside its difficult to get a job and get out of the circle, but a lot of them don't really want to, is too much like hard work..

Stick the minor criminals in the Army for a few years. Let them fight the wars for us, & also leqrn some discipline at the same time.

Bring back national service...
Easy living in prison. I don't buy that. No matter how cosy it might be (and it often isn't) they can't walk out the door.
I thought the main point of prison was removal of freedom. Sure some people may have such poor living conditions that any prison seems preferable, but for the rest?
Besides, if you want a REAL rant, look at the things that can land you a prison sentence nowadays!!!!!!!!!!!
When am I going to hear anyone compain about the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (The RIP Act) - or more accurately R.I.P. your freedoms.
Have you seen the jail sentences built into that Act just for telling someone that your files are being read by the State?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't get me startted on RIPA dude. That's the finest way of keeping real criminals out of prison, and putting hard working police officers in seriou financial difficulty.
Don't get me started, this post would be full of *************** marks. Orwell was right it's just that 1984 was a bit early.
A Political Advisor to President Clinton, when he heard about the RIP Act said only two words. "Police State".
Look at the Acts that have been passed over the last five years. One simple thing you do. Ask yourself, "what part of society will these laws be most effective against?"
Answer:- Law Abiding Joe Public. Not the crooks, not the conmen, not the rapists, muggers, and despoilers of children, not the burglars, the drug dealers, the pimps, not the arsonist, the fraudster, the car thief, but little Joe with his mortgage and 2.4 children, the man , or woman, who is static, can't run' can't hide, has something to lose. That's who the Government shafts!
Why? Because the only internal enemy any State has, is the general population. There's only two things that bring down a state, overwhelming outside force, or the general public.
I'm not going to go on - I could write all night.
You know what's worse? If this thread were to continue long enough and become virulent enough AND used certain words repeatedly, - it would get watched! It would be noted.
And some dozo Civil Servant (semantically equivalent to "Civil Master") would access these files and maybe, routinely, access e-mails and such of any "interesting" posters then, if Kustom's Hosts were to tell anyone - bang - you're in jail. If Graeme was required to know and he spoke - bang - he's in jail.
And while we're at it, the rest of the site would be looked at for anything else of interest.

Yes! At the end of the day we had more powers to watch people in their own homes before RIPA, now we struggle to use any form of observations on a known criminal as evidence to put them behind bars without it being thrown out at court as inadmissable.
I'd rather live in a "police state" than a world where laws are introduced that actually keep scum out on the streets.

Alan, you been to any prisons recently?
If you get locked up for something and are considered a low risk for self harming, violence or escape, you end up in cat d or poss cat c, sfter a few days at a dispersal center.
The difference being cat c has fences to protect the inmate, as they usually house the kiddy fiddlers etc.
And while you are there, the only difference for a lot of the scum who are there is that they dont have to get up once a fortnight to sign on.
They have easy access to drugs, a lot of mates around and no hard work to do or anything.
food is served hot, and usually edible
everywhere is nice and dry, and if it isnt they complain to the european courts and get compensation.
Case in point, a solicitor friend of mine was visiting a client in ford, and when he got there he was told the visit was canceled.
After a lot of shouting and phone calls, he found out why
his client had been out for a stroll in the gardens near the fence, and been hit on the head by a 4 pack of lager someone had thrown over the fence, knocking him out.
He got compo for that....

......and you don't need to run away from the security officer at teco's to ensure you can eat it!

or walk, and then when they do catch you sue them for ripping your designer jacket in the struggle, even though you nicked it the week b4....
You still can't walk out the door and have a free life.
Otherwise, you make good points.
Pimp, of course I don't mean you!! After all those 'phone numbers you gave me.:D

that assumes that the people inside want to walk outside?
Most of them are happy to be warm, dry, with sky tv, food and drugs, drink if they want etc
well, maybe not happy, but not deterred from doing what got them there in the first place
This thread really hit home. Especially because I've currently got a complaint going through the CPS about how they handled the prosecution of the two lads who put my 15 year old stepson in hospital.
Both lads were guilty as sin and always will be. One a little 14 year old started on my lad on his way home from a friends offering him out for a fight, they ended up having a scuffle but then his 18 year old mate decided to deck my lad knocking his front tooth out and breaking his jaw, they then took about kicking him on the ground. This was last september.
In court 2 weeks ago the younger lad got a 6 month supervision order and was ordered to pay £65 damages, the older man walked away thanks to his no comment statements even though he admitted he was there at the time. He lied through his back teeth in court.
There is no justice in this country. Like I told the CPS, I don't care whether some liberal magistrates say hes not guilty, he`ll always be as guilty as sin to me and my family. Neither of the animals have a clue what damage its done to my family and I doubt they ever will.
I told the CPS if any other member of my family ends up being attacked again I won't be phoning the police, I`ll deal with it myself because then I'll know justice will be served.
