Lo Programmers,

I need a spot of help with this one, Xvid (http://www.xvid.org) <-- these guys make the xvid codec, and the problem I have is that I can't find an installer on the site, and from what I see, I think it's because it needs compiled? Now I'm not really a programmer, so i was wondering if any of you lot would know how to do this, in order to make the codec installable.

I did find a slightly older version as an exe which installed, but would like the latest one if possible, any able to help?

Thomas

Thomas

Do a search on Google for the Nimo codec pack & install it. This contains the Xvid codec (amongst many others) and it works fine.

here's 2 links to exe installation files for it if you like

http://www.moviecodec.com/download/xvid112502.exe

http://dvd.box.sk/newsarchN.php3?id=6196

or finaly theres this one which is dated 23/12/02
http://nic.dnsalias.com/XviD_Install.exe

as for compiling it instead of jsut downlaoding the exe files
well it looks to me like c files
so you would need a C compiler to do it

[edit]
i was goign to say the nimopack but some folk seem to have issues with it
F**ks up other codecs and stuff

it is handy though

Abe, the only time I have seen if mess up other codecs is if the G400 filter is installed (which isn't needed unless you do have a Matrox G400) & the bicubic resizer (which also isn't needed unless your MPG streams are playing upside down). Other than that I haven;t personally seen any problems with it on either my own systems or other peoples.

ok guys, thanks for the help, please don't fall out over it 8) :D

I think I'll just go with the individual installer.

Thanks for the help you two.

I had problems with the Nimo Codec pack recently, although they had been fine for ages. It was after a reinstall.

Anyway found an alternative ffdshow.

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=53761

Works very well in my experience.

Firstly, XviD is pretty darned good.

Secondly, if they don't provide precompiled installers (and believe me if you want bleeding edge stuff you can forget having an installer) it's a simple matter to compile it for Windows under Cygwin.

Thirdly, bicubic resizing is to do with the image loss you get from resizing a w*x image to an x*y image. Bicubic resampling is just the highest quality way of resizing; unless I'm missing something, it has nothing to do with your movies being upside-down.

Hi Mr Nemesis,

I agree, I compaired the same movie, one in divx and one is xvid, and xvid definatly seems to have something going for it that divx doesn't, for a start, it seems to handle black scenes pretty well, where divx will still leave a small lighter imprint of what was on screen e.g if there is a fade out.

I think pimp was just making an funny example, nothing more 8)

So is Cygwin free and or easy to use? Will have a look for it later thanks.

Mr Nemesis.

Taken from this page (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/nimo/) where the Nimo Codec Pack is hosted.

WARNING !!!
Do not chose the G400 Filter if you do not have G400 graphic cards
Do not install the Bicubic Resizer Filter id you do not have any problem about video upside-down.

Thats it what it tells you on their site and if you do install the BiCubic Resizer Filter (as I have done in a clicking frenzy in the past) it does put the images upside down if it is not needed.

Cygwin (http://www.cygwin.com/) is a GPL prog made by RedHat which is basically a full UNIX environment running under windows. Hence with it you can run many Linux commands, and also compile things with GCC (The GNU C Compiler) so that they can work on Windows. It's been a godsend at work, at least until we persuade our boss to get us some decent Linux boxen.

I've only ever used it for a small app for my phone (Gnokii), but with a bit of fiddling and luck you should be able to get most stuff to compile under Windows, although it might help to have GTK and QT libraries installed too.

why dont you just compile it in windows?

instead of runnign a full unix environment in windows

Hi Ling,

Care to share how to do it?

Mr Nemesis, What kind of linux boxes you running right now? If windows based, what spec?

Completley off topic but the divx 5.03 codec is out now.

Some guy did a 10 pass encode of a film....overkill!

My main PC you can see in my sig.

I'm also running a file server based on my old OEM box running Debian, on a 1GHz P3 w 384 MB's of RAM, with a 30 GB sys drive and a 120 GB file drive (another Western Digital Caviar). Eventually I'm going to biuld a proper server (namely one with PCI-X slots) so that I can chuck a 3ware RAID card and have bucketloads of safe storage.

xvid is an open source version of divx 5 more or less (although coded completely differently) and it works very well.

check out doom9.org for guides and other info.

everything you need to know should be there ;)
