Lo people,

I've been looking around the web for the utility or firmware update which would allow me to put the seagate barracudas into silent mode, but can't find it. What I can find is loads of sites telling me about the seek times, and the differences between performance seek and silent seek, ugh!

I've got to go and send the e-mails to all the lovely people that had orders shipped with us today, but if any of you know where I can get this, I'd really appreciate it.

cheers

Thomas

Which drives Thomas? The Barracuda III's were not over noisy but audible, but the Barra IV's I use myself and they are silent.

I haven't come across a Seagate utility to do this (obviously because they are so quiet normally) but I know that Maxtor have an Acoustics program which would take the drive out of low noise mode & put it into standard more for faster access times.

I am also a Seagate Partner Program Member and not seen anything like this on the software supplied by them.

As far as I know there isnt such a utility , I've had a quick look on their site and can't find any references to it either.

To be honest I can even hear mine anyway . I do remember some1 mentioning the maxtor utility did work on seagates over on the sudhian forums but I could be wrong

Sorry couldnt be any more help :(

Pimp, It seems to be in all the documentation, Xdba in standard mode X Dba in silent mode, or silent seek as they say.

It's maybe urban legend 8) but I thought that there was a firmware upgrade to do this.

Im working on a project for a computer with no fans etc, so its gonna have a seagate hd in it, hopefully it will be 100% inaudible.

if ti comes to it, I'll put it in a silent bay, but If it can be done by software, it would be preferable.

The BarracudaIV's are 99.9% inaudible bar when they are really thrashing where you may hear a very low volume 'ticking'. Other than that I had to keep checking the first time I used them to make sure the system hadn't crashed due to the lack of noise.

I have the same thoughts compared to my old maxtor this drive is amazingly quiet

Good good, that means that will be the only thing making a noise, and a very quiet one at that :D

Gordy! You're a life saver! But on running the utility, I found it's already in silent mode, I think this one's a duffer! Just sounds so loud.

Thanks all the same

No probs, wot kind of noise is the drive making , as some of the early models had a problem with a high pitched whining noise , I know the later models dont have this fault :)

firmware 3.0.5 I think have this issue

no it's just a loud seek noise, not clunky, but almost old drive sound, i think it's had shock, when the customers computer first arrived, it hadn't had a nice time in the couriers van!

Too bad the IBM software doesn't work with its own SCSI drives. Grrrr.!

Intel Application Accelerator can also change the acoustic mode and power saving modes on any IDE drive.

Caveat is, you need a i8xx chipset motherboard to run the app.

well this particular one is an SIS, but build plenty of the intel chipsets too, so will keep it in mind cheers 8)

Yeah, I usually take my drives into work - my machine there is running a i815EPB chipset (all I need now is a decent CPU in it).

Heh, 733EB@825 - such a waste on a board like that...if only I had a 1.4 P3-S... :)
