Why is it that certain people seem to think that linux is the worlds best os, regardless of the function which needs to be performed?
I mean, i know it has merits for a lot of aplications, but then so do many many other os s.
The usual argument is that its free, and windows isnt
but when your it budget is 100% deductable, as it is in most companies, what difference does that make?
also, I'm sure the linux gurus here can name 100's of apps where linux is better than windows, easier etc, but surley a lot of that is down to familiraty (or something, its late)
If you are used to a system, the set up is easy, if not, then it isnt so good.

what do people think?

well, everyone to their own - you know exactly the kind of answers you're going to get in reply to this :)

I still think Apple's OSX is a great OS , although that's probably just me being biased because it looks pretty...

I had a quick look at linux, because I wanted to run a web server off it, but in the end thought no, with how much tweaking you have to do it.

Not worth the hassle. I like to lead a stress free life where possible.

I agree 100% DeadOne. Why *nix users have to pour why we should use it down our throats at nearly every oppurtunity goes beyond me. If you want to use *nix, use it, if you want to use MS, use it. Use what YOU are happy with and not what someone says you should use.

bsd looks far more fun, somehow theyve managed to incorporate geek, and sexy chicks in rubber

id be using linux right now if i could get my modem to work tbh, first i had a software modem that had no linux drivers, so i bought a hardware modem that connects via serial. then my mobo borked and i bought a abit at7, sans serial ports. i just cant win :(

Well, I use Windows on my desktops for gaming etc.

*all* of my servers are *nix and thats what I like so thats what I use. There are so many arguments I could use, but I don't think i'll bother now.

As for Mac OS, I have a few OS 8.6 boxes, a 9.1 box and soon to have an OS X box (10.2).

will someone please give me one real world exapmle where linux is more use than windows or the freebie unix os s that you can get now?

And the reasons why?

stormuk

Im a multi user - both XP, ME and Linux

One of the reasons for me that Linux is more fun is because its so bloody complex

But the main thing is its free - it has an office application that can easily use microsofts files and do near enough the same again for free and its fine for webstuff if not better....

The only downer on it is the games and new hardware can be a pig with drivers....

But Im now playing with wine/winex which makes it possible for some windows apps/games to work in linux, and so far they seem better in linux for some bizarre reason - agent hasnt disconnected in 32 hours!!!

stormuk

Star office isnt free anymore! unless you know someone with a beta copy :)

KDE on mandrake 9.2 just feels more well built - open office always looks amiga ish to me!

I use Open Office to do all my office work (word processing and spreadsheet). I'm just finishing work on a web based database to take over the spreadsheet work.

But never had any issues with Open Office, and it does more things better than MS Office imo.

Some real world uses of Linux

Academic research
Military computer networks
Computer Servers

Reasons.

Open standards allows them to regulate be sure of security and integrity of the systems. Being open source allows the people who maintain the systems to evolve them, i.e. fix bugs that effect them and not have to wait for MS releases, add new file compatibility types, add features they need. Technical documentation for Linux tends to be more complete because of its open nature, this facilitates the above. All MS code/standards are propriety/closed, so u can do none of the above. Others than that, it don’t crash like windows, its not bloated like windows, its not full of bugs like windows, its not slow like windows etc etc etc. :D

1 of my reasons:

I am a software developer by trade. I moved to Linux recently, after nearly 15 years using windows, I still code for windows at work, but I use Linux on all my PCs at home. I like to have a full development environment at home, Compare prices:

M$ Visual Studio .NET (Enterprise Architect 2002) = £1600 and I have to buy Office and Windows on top also.

Linux = £50 and I get thousands of app, full dev environment, plus all the source code!!!

I still keep a WinME partition for games tho ;)

I agree with Mr Pimp earlier, use what your happy with :)

but surley, if you code for windows you get the msdn stuff free?
I know i do and i only support it.

Also, doesn't it concern you that the security patch you apply might have been written by a spotty teenager and tested on his version of linux on his set up?

As for crashing in windows, i personally havent seen this happen often in a well set up install, well not to the extent people seem to think.
the pc i am writing this on has been running for 16 days so far, 24/7, doing a variety of tasks, with no problems.

i feel that the reason people claim linux is more stable, a lot of the time, is that a linux install seems to take more effort, most customisation, so it tends to be set up better, whereas usually windows works out the box, therefore it might not be optomised for the system/ apps that it is being used for.

Similar deal with security
a lot of windows admins accept the defaults, cos it seems to be working, whereas in linux you need to fiddle with it a lot more b4 it works
just my opinion, based on a godd few years of installing and supporting both on networks ranging into the 10 of thousands of users.

Interesting points :)

MSDN subscriptions cost money, we get a subscription at work each, but its all locked away in some room. Heres some prices i found:

MSDN Universal Subscriptions 7.0 - £2000
MSDN Enterprise Subscriptions 7.0 - £1500
MSDN Professional Subscriptions 7.0 - £860

Not something i would buy at home, rather spend that cash on a flash new PC :D There are lower grades of the MSDN, but these become very limited for a developer looking to learn new skills.

On the secruity patch... that spotty teenager may work for Microsoft just as he may work at home on Linux patches. But back to what i said before in the last post, if you willing, you can patch Linux yourself (i.e. fix the bugs yourself), and this is a great advantage to some places that require high secruity/integrity/secrets .

Crashes, My Win2k machine at work stands up well given the hammering it gets, and i like to see how long it'll stay up before a reboot, it managed a month or so previously :) You'll get different respones about crashes depending on what type of PC user you talk to, as a developer, my screwing with the system tends to cause more than my fair share of crashes. I noticed Linux will handle an application crash very well, while windows tends to want to reboot. This handling of application faults may be partly the reason people see Linux as more stable.

But your right, Linux is fiddly, more so when your on the learning curve with it!! Actual installation was easy, but getting the net connection fixed up took me 3 days!!!!!! Thats the downside.

I am no fanatic of Linix, but i am a fan of it, and of open source/open standards. In terms of skills, i prefer to know both systems, just in case...
