View Full Version : Whats the best car of all time

And why?
I know this is gonna cause a lot of difference of opinions, but there are a lot of different ways to describe best cars, looks, performance, fun etc
personally, out of the cars i have owned, or driven, i still have a soft spot for my old lanci delta, and a bently turbo r was the most fun for motorway cruising.
what do you all think?

Sierra Cosworth RS500. Stood alone without equal for so long both on the rally track & the public highways.
Dead_One

well, i dunno about without equal.....
seem to remember there was an audi quite good around the same time
and a few other cars, m3 etc

Skyline R34 GT-R V-SpecII, very fast, affordable and highly upgradeable. This car can easily kick-out 1000Bhp after the necessary upgrades.
Dead_One
20-01-2003, 09:07
But does that make it more fun than say, a rally spec mk1 escort?
or more satisfying than having a salesman flash you on a motorway while you pootle along in a car with no exterior mods, but a seriously tweaked engine, and then fly away from him?
K Hussain
20-01-2003, 09:21
Oh there are plenty of aftermarket kits for it but most kit these days cause too much drag so you have to be careful of what you buy
I agree most basic cars offer more grin factor its more of whats in the driver than the car. so what 1000bhp and computer controled this and that dose not count for much when your doing 20 mph in traffic. can many people out there realy say thay can control a car with 400 bhp+
Hmm its easily a Skyline but anything over 500bhp ceases to be affordable!!!
I decided on a GTS because a its cheaper than a GTR and it slides :) I nearly got a R32 GTR but isntead paid a bit more for a R33 GTS coz the running costs are less...
Re grin factor I take your point but its only half of it you have to drive a skyline Ive had mine for nearly a year and I still get out smiling everytime!! and hell if there is a jam I turn the radio off just to listen to her.

Nice
the one and only
audi ur quattro from the eighties
vw corrado vr6 the best handling sports hatchback ever and still is sooooo well handled on the road and circuits great for track day's.
just forget the ricers german cars are the only way to go.
Dead_One
21-01-2003, 10:40
dont agree that the corrado is the best handling car, the lancia has to have that
wizbongre

Have to disagree - my car (http://www.garethryan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/photo.htm) is the best handling!!
Jokes aside, after spending way too much money on it, it now runs:-
Leda Coilovers all round - 325lb springs up front and 225lb back. 24 point adjustable dampers.
Nismo front upper strut brace.
Cusco front lower four point strut brace.
Cusco rear upper strut brace.
Whiteline rear adjustable anti-roll bar.
Whiteline uprate front bushes.
To coin a phrase - "it corners on rails!"
I've been well impressed with the way Lancer Evo's handle - make a brilliant driver out of anyone! And Skyline's put a serious grin on your face.
For normal cars I love the way Ford Focus' handle and believe it or not, Citreon Xantia estates!! For stupid big cars they go round corners!!

The MG X-Power looks like it could be 'interesting'; I mean how many cars allow you to spec nitrous oxide injectors as part of the standard manufacturer's upgrades?
Also, anything that TVR makes, they may be extremely poorly constructed but they are pretty much the cheapest super cars you can buy. Mind you, the lack of ABS/Airbags/Power steering etc would worry me.

If we're talking thrills per pound then give me a Caterham 7 big fat juicy rears a 998cc bike engine redline-ing at 14,000rpm.
Oh, and a set of ear-plugs and a pair of shades.
Serious pleasure.

If you're going that route Adam you want the copy of a caterham, can't remeber the company name but it has two 1litre motorbike engines, driving all four wheels, one awsome beast. Was on 5th gear once, trying to break the 0-60mph record, which it did on it's first run, unfortunatly it had a slight accident on the second run with a piston going through the side of one of the engines. Had two sequential gearboxes which could be changed seperatly or together, with a computer to help control them.

yep thats the one, gotta love the WR version-
twin 1200cc Kawasaki ZX12 engines were used, each producing approximately 190bhp.
In November 2001, the Z100WR posted a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.8 seconds and a 0 to 100 mph time of 6.3 seconds using road legal tyres.

1978 Porsche 911 Turbo. 4.6 0-60 was not the fastest out there, but the 911 was acknowledged as being the fastest on normal roads with its combination of brute power and superior handling. A properly specced turbo was the meanest thing on the roads back in the 80's with its flared rear arches and large spoiler...

Like the baddies drove in Condorman!!! (Not the main one. He drove a 935)
get yerselfs a bike and 600cc's will have you all gasping, never mind an R1, GSXR1000 or whatever! :p Personally, I would love a Skyline, but the cost? Bonkers!
I said I'd stop talking bikes but back in the early 80s on a car ferry with lots of bikes I saw onr of the then new Honda 600cc four cylinders. It was 200Kg heavier than my 1,000cc RS and physically MUCH smaller. I thought at the time, how could anyone want one of those. (Purely the weight, 'cos even then it was a flying machine!)
Hahaha! And your opinion now?

2nd hand R34 about 30-40,000 :)
dead1 ui might have been better off making a survey of maybe 10 cars of ur choice as this could go on forever....but there is possibly 1 car better than the skyline ...and doesn't come with hundreds of electronics to correct ur every FCUK up ..its the TVR CERBERA.... there was a thing on the telly the fastest cars for .25 mile or possibly 1mile ....the list of cars was
Aston martin Vanquish , Porsche 911 turbo , Caterum 7 , Dodge viper , Lotus esprit V8 ...the 911 lead for 1/2 then came the TVR an finished 5 car lengths ahead of the 911 ....the order of finish was TVR , 911 , Lotus ,Aston , viper then the 7 ....take into account the skyline has a turbo ...so did the 911 but the TVR looks and goes better plus the sound of the engine
K Hussain
27-01-2003, 23:26
But can a TVR go around a corner like a Skyline?
Lets face it cars aren’t built to go in a straight line, it's the track times that count.
TRUE but there is better than the skyline
and it also comes from japan ....the lexus IS200 as i have seen the jap version standard engine tuned to 600bhp....i have the pics still ...plus b4 i test drive a skyline id like to try a lexus soarer 1st
Graeme*Kustom*
28-01-2003, 00:20
The IS200 is going to be my next car if things go to plan :)
I heard they handle like crap, but I don't care I just love the design inside and out - they look fantastic !
I occasionally glance at the price of 2nd hand ones and they're getting sensible now.. tempting , but I'm still happy with the Xsara so I'll keep it for a while yet !
K Hussain
28-01-2003, 00:33
The Lexus IS200 is a nice car but the performance cannot compare to a Skyline.
A Lexus engine at 600bhp is good but the 'Nissan RB26DETT' found in the Skyline R32, 33 & 34 has produced 1400bhp and around 600bhp with stock engine components.
Graeme*Kustom*
28-01-2003, 00:40
I would never even suggest it could compare with a Skyline in performance ... it's not really built for the same purpose though (unless some mad Jap tunes got their hands on one...)
And as much as I would love a Nissan Skyline, I doubt I would get the insurance policy arranged :)

ah :)
A Skyline at 1400 bhp come on mate there is about 4 skylines out there that have +1000 bhp and need rebuilds after a few trips out.
The whole reason why a skyline rules is for the simple fact they handle great, plus they can be modded easily and they can handle the power put through them - They can be taken to 4-500bhp and can almost be treated the same as a normal skyline - serviced every 2-3 months though for oil changes etc and thats about it... if you really want to know about gtrs and us gts's goto www.gtr.co.uk and have a read...
But you start to pay for the 6-700 bhp cars as they do need high maintenance - Sorry for the neg msg but think all this 1000bhp+ is just silly, any car can be made to go fast but its just a skyline does it in style without being converted to a track car... or being stupidly dangerous...
Its the first car I have ever had where Im stumped on what to get next! hmm though there is the GTR :)

I didn't just claim these figures, I found them on a few websites after searching with google.
Hears one of them http://www.meggala.com/nissanrb3.html
Thanks for your link, I will have a read but remember Never underestimate the power of a Skyline.

Without a doubt, the best car of all time has to be the TVR Cerbera 4.5 Red Rose.
Awesome power.
Standing mile in a sniff over 30 seconds.
Exhaust and engine note to die for.
ah man, so many to choose from...
McLaren F1 - enought to scare the bejesus out of any man.
Ferrari 288 GTO - its an F40 but better looking really
Porsche 959 - accelerationnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Audi Quattro Sport - Pure Ruffness.
Mercedes 300SLR - proof that the germans can make a good looking car after all.:p 165 mph+ too
If I had to pick ONE then it would be a Ferrari 456GT, 4 seats, 190mph and well, its a ferrari - nuff said.

The build quality can't be that bad for a car of that kinda price can it?
i saw a cerbera where the door was so misaligned you could fit your hand in the gap.
Bloody fast though...:D
Fireblade
29-01-2003, 10:56
There's really no excuse for shoddy workmanship on TVR's, since every car is hand built! Doesn't say much for quality control at the 'Blackpool Rocket' HQ if these tales of misalignment etc are true
more the fact they break down every 1000 miles if your lucky
I remember reading a story in topgear about 4 years back, one of their reports got locked in a Cerber for 4 hours, as the electronic door system decided not to play.
Any ideas how much a reasonable R33 GTS would set me back? Ive got about 5k, and was looking at Coraddo VR6s, until i watched The Fast And The Furious again.
Lamborghini Countach, 30 years since it was first released and it's still stunning and a snip at ~£35,000 these days
ok this thread seems to have narrowed itself to whats the best performance car but anyway my selection:
TVR Tuscan S: Its fast, pretty and what a noise.
Mercedes Gwagon 300D: Yes its a 4x4 yes its slow and has the areodynamics of a brick but you'll be hard pushed to get it stuck, its a merc, its got hydrolic diff locks, loads of pulling power and theres a petrol version with a 4 litre V8 that brabus and many other companies will happily tweek.
Your also forgetting the exsistence of classic cars like Jag E and D types I mean the D type is one of the most beautifal cars ever made. hmmm what about the ford GT40 nobodies mentioned it.
Yes the skyline is an amazing car but you do realise the engine block was an acident tis a big solid cast iron lump. Can it really be classed as the best car ever not really imo for a start its got quite a tacky interior and when compared to my dads Rolls Royce a skyline is quite uncomfortable.
The best car in the world should be a well balenced car something with speed, power, looks whilt retaining practicality and have some reguard for those on a smaller budget as to what this wonder car is I have no idea but one possibility that comes close is the Subaru forester turbo. I know its not to everyones taste but there are so many good cars which are good for so many different reasons.
As a final note before anybody says classics car cant turn corners take a drive in a Jensen interceptor FF: A car that can turn a corner on ice at 100 mph and it has no electronics controlling it instead it uses a mechanical traction controll system.
and this really is my last thought on the subject: To find the best car in the world you should only be looking at cars in their stock form not what mods can be done as if you include mods that lada that was on top gear with the lotus running gear would be a contender.

I'm really surprised that nobody mentioned the E-Type Jag... arguably the best car of its day and recently voted the best car of all time by Autocar magazine.
What about the McClaren F1 (still the fastest)?
Not to mention the original BMW M3: left-hand drive only but unbeatable on the road and track - one of the finest chassis ever made.
The Pagini Zonda has to be at the top of the pack too!
Well if you wont fast check out a Bugatti Veyron
check the specs
Engine =7993 cc
1001 BHP
0-186mph 14secs
max speed 272
oh and btw price try 600,000 and thats the estimated selling price.

'nuff said?
I CAN'T BELIEVE no-one's mentioned the RS200. How dare thee all talk about silly track cars, when what really matters is the rallying - the most grueling test of a car.
The RS200 was amazing, the RS200 Evolution was absolutely astounding.
The latter model, at the stock 600BHP, pulled off 0-62 @ 3.07s, and was in the Guinness Book of Records until mid-2003 for doing so.
Ford, and the Rally drivers privelledged enough to race one, claimed it was even faster than this.
An example of which is one of the only RS200 Evos that's still around, owned by Pat 'Someone'... Running 750BHP, it runs the 0-62mph in 2.4 SECONDS.
0-100mph is an astounding 5.2s... Faster than the 0-62 figures of most cars.
So... That's my ultimate car - chance of owning one? 1/100000000000.
You can, however, get a kit for one - £4000... Then you'd need a donor 4wd Cossie to get it anywhere near the original's performance. Guess what I'll be doing one day? ;)
Realistically speaking, I'd love an Escort Cosworth - Rally car, bred for the road. Sure, Skyline's have super power and super handling - but I don't think it'd win a Rally. A Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VII/VIII would be almost as nice to have, as a Cossie.
Still can't get over how you've all neglected the Group B rally cars!!

not really into cars at all, I wouldn't pay more than a grand for a car, with one exception.

Oh yes. And the 205 T16, the Audi Quattro, the Lancia's ... All amazing cars.
But the RS200 was the pick of the bunch in my opinion. The 6R4 was amazing (as were all the Group B's), but it didn't have the fibre glass shell (crafted by Reliant, I might add) of the RS200.
