SB51G
2.53 P4
PC3200 @ 333
Radeon 8500.

Now to me it's a bit too loud. Idling at 34°c atm. I do do a lot of LANs about 1 a fortnight so I don't want it dying from heat when I'm there, but I do want it quiet enough so I can hardly hear it when I'm catching Zzz's. Max temp from this last weekend's LAN was 54°c

I'm pretty sure that the PSU fan is making the most noise and the air that comes out of it at a LAN is pretty warm. If I changed the fan in there for a smaller one would it effect the cooling much cos I've also heard the shuttles have a poor life expectancy in the PSU dept.

For the Radeon I did have a Zalman sink on there, but due to the lack of air flow moving over it like I had in the PC60 I decided to play safe and pop the original sink back on. Once again, if I 7volted it would it be ok when I'm gaming for a few hours straight. A lot of yes and no's are heard when the question is asked about the newer Zalman heatpipe sinks fitting in Shuttles. I also don't want to go cutting holes in my Shuttle to fit fans. The shuttle is a lovely looking PC without cutting it up. Suttle mods such as a little cathode to create a glow though the holes looks really nice. :)

If I do change the standard 80mm fan on the back for a Papst 12db one how is that going to effect my heat situ when gaming and when sat there doing nothing?

Many thanks in advance. :)

how is your CPU running so cool, mine is running at 58C, and ive only got a 2.4b. :(

My shuttle owns j00 - why? Paxmate installed all round, including under motherboard.

TT Smart fan running silently at 1500rpm, just psu to sort out and then true silence.

I changed the standard fan on my sk41 for a 19db, i also removed the grill for better airflow, by doing this .. is also removed a low pitched humm i was getting .. temp wise .. may risen 1 - 3*c .. but nothing to worry about ..

What i would suggest is .. switch the standard over to the 12db and see how it goes .. i think that may be a bit touch and go .. if the temps rise to much .. just swap back .. you'll always have a need for a silent 80mm fan

My ex-gf's SS51G idles at 49°c with a 2.0a. I'm sure it's a hit and miss affair when you mount the sink. Some people have said to remount it with a clean spread of AS3 to see if that helps.

I think the PSU fan is the hardest to sort out imo. There's nothing you can do to change without loosing the little cooling that 40mm is providing.

Mine is mounted each time with a fresh spread of AS2.

Hmm I have paxmate all over my scorpio and it helps quite well, but I didn't find my shuttle very loud even with the sunon fan. I have 2x 80mm antec trilight fans in it now.

I built a shuttles system for my ex and compared to my last 2 pcs it was silent.

True the pc`s in question were a juno p3 case with 6 80mm fans, 1 120 mm fan and a delta fan on the heatsink and the other is my current setup which is a lian li pc70 with 5 80mm fans

The lian li is soon gonna be my quiet project although i`m looking at getting a shuttle and getting it silent.

My shuttle is almost inaudable :)

I have a 12db main fan, the graphics card is 5volted , and I swapped the psu fan for a silent papst fan .

Along with some paxmate , its very quiet my most quiet pc ever :)

I think thats what ill have to do, mines high fifty's constantly, then im gonna change the fan and add some paxmate.

Ill just remove the monitoring software hehe.

I think it needs some more air getting into it thoug, the grills are obscured.

I never understand all this temp lark , if its stable its fine :)

Every time I see some1 mentioning high temps they are still well within the operating temps of the cpu :)

See no evil and all that , I'll have a look at the temps when I shut down in a mo for u if ya like :)

I aint fussing over them, i know there within the working ranges and all.
Just that when im playing games for a few hours at a time it gets a little toasty, hence why shuttles are called toasters heh.

Well just had a lookie in the bios and it was running at 46 and 37 :)

Fine to me :)

If yout thinking of replacing the fan have you concidered replacing it with a larger fan running slower?

Keeps airflow up and noise is often less.

you cant fit a larger fan in the shuttle without changing the fan carrier/radiator and all of the case and mobo layout etc.

80mm only.

ah ok, well thought i'd mention it! Haven't had a shuttle myself yet!

Dremelled out the dopey square holes in the back of my XPC last night. Now a big square hole with an 80mm chrome guard across it.

Also found a Panaflo H1A, fitted that in, and the PC is much, much quieter. The fan doesn't spin up so often now, thanks to the easier airflow. The little PSU fan isn't as noisy now either, bizarrely.

Just thought I would add to the discussion on quietening the shuttle power supply. I drastically reduced the noise from my SB51 by adding an extra 40mm fan.

While trying to work out the various noise sources I discovered that when my Radeon 9700 was connected, the power supply made an aweful lot of extra noise. As I understand it, the PSU fan is temperature controlled, so it must be the heat generated by the extra ~50W of load from the video card that is causing the fan to run faster and louder. I didn't want to invalidate the warranty yet by replacing the fan, so I opted for more cooling.

To this end, I just used a sticky pad to fix an extra 40mm chipset fan to the bottom of the drive cage about half an inch ahead of the PSU (too close and it starts to make more noise). This blows air into the PSU and has enough of an effect on the cooling to calm down the main PSU fan.

I swapped the main fan for a TT smart fan too, but now I have the problem that the fan on the Radeon (it's a Saphire one) is the most vocal source of noise and it is starting to annoy me.

Anyone have any top tips for silencing a Radeon in a shuttle? Would scrapping the stock fan for a crystal orb help (I assume that one of those would be adequate to cool a 9700) or is that still going to sound loud?

Kynoch

Crystal orb will be noisier than the stock fan on a Radeon.

Just 7 volt the fan on the radeon it will drop the noise in half :)

to quieten my psu i decided to invalidate the warranty.
removed the 'gril' replaced that with a 40mm real one... replaced the 40mm fan with a £4 jobbie from maplins.

i didn't connect it to the fan controller in the psu. the 40mm fan came with a mobo header. so it is coneected to the mobo and controlled by speedfan. usually at 1% but jumps to 100% when hot. but the air is still only warm when running at 1%.

so quiet i can hear my 80mm zalman (20db) running at 4% (controlled from speedfan) so that is no where near 20db. the loudest thing in my case is my 120gig 'cuda V.

A normal molex will go yellow-black-black-red which is:

12v-gnd-gnd-5v

The fan connector will use the yellow/black which is 12v and 0v (+12v)

Move the black wire or whatever colour is in the 0v (ground) line and move it to where the 5v pin would normally go. This is your new negative "terminal"

This gives you +12v + (-5v) which results in +7v

The same goes for 5v, but you just move the positive pin from the fan to the 5v side.
