i have .net server and windows xp server, they are the previous incarnations of this.
they are basically standard 2k server with a few more whistles, the cartoon gui, and a lot of .net stuff bolted on
fairly stable, esp. considiring they are beta

Whats the XP server software like for running a web site from my system at home??? Plus does your version of XP need to be the one with the service pack, cause mine doesnt have it, ahem if you know what I mean.

Is the software built into XP, or do you need to download it as a bolt on???

Very intreasted in this, all help apperiated.

Gotta echo stormuk here; if you absolutely have to have a webserver running at home, use Linux.

You can get lots of free webserver stuff for both WIndows and Linux (namely IIS by MS and the old Apache/PHP/MySQL servers by the OSS community). ISS is a security nightmare, Apache is slightly better (although bear in mind that vulns can totally root your box).

We have a local webserver in that flat (combined with the mail/fileserver, RH8 on my old P3 system), but access to port 80 is disabled both at the router and in iptables (except for machines on the local subnet) so it can't make any in-or-outgoing connections. We just use it to test our web based code and provide a PHP based streaming jukebox in the living room. If we made it available to the outside world, we'd be fixing security patches left right and centre, our upload speed would be crunched if we ever put anything interesting on our webpages (not to mention the possibilty of the server getting fried by too many incoming connections - ie the dreaded /. effect - but we'd most likely run out of bandwidth waaaaay before then), and it'd kill the computer doing what it was meant to do; serve files and grab our mail.

On top of that, most cable/DSL providers don't provide you with a static IP and have strict rules saying you're not allowed a server of any kind at your end of the line. This is cos DSL and cable were designed with low uploads in mind, and using up lots of UL bandwidth costs them a packet.

If you're still not convinced, I think you can get IIS as a free download from MS. But I'd use Apache if I were you. Even better, I'd have a look for a decent host.

I believe the WinXP server is the reincarnation of Win2k server, in that it's Win2k with some stuff bolted on (typically, support for more than 2 CPU's, buckets of RAM, tools for web/mail/file serving etc etc). Still wouldn't touch a windows server with a barge pole though :p

Dont bother with this M$ fsking rubbish. I have had experience of it and it sucks.

Due to the nature of my work, I work with many varied servers doing many roles, not one of them are Microsoft based, most arent even Linux.

Webserver software: Apache
Webserver extensions: PHP, MySQL, ModSSL

DNS can be done blindfolded in *nix, try it in windows and it has you setting up active directories, restarting 3001 times and a few wasted hours of boredom.

dns on ms 2k server and above is a doddle
can do it witha couple of mouse clicks.
only thing you need ad for is if the box is going to be a domain controller.
for simple dns you are looking at a few mins from finishing the install to being up and running...

Compared with *nix

- Enable it
- Modify the forward lookup files
- Modify the reverse lookup files
- start dns
- rejoice

I know which I prefer :)

It is a complete OS.

Take Windows 2000:
Win 2000
Win 2000 Pro
Win 2000 Advanced Server
Win 2000 Enterprise Server

Then in XP:
XP Home
XP Pro
XP .NET Server
XP .NET Enterprise

:)

Got it, just not installed it yet due to no room on HDD's...
