View Full Version : Redhat or Mandrake?
I've been planning to get an SS51G and dual boot Windows and Linux. Does anyone have experience of installing/running RedHat or Mandrake? Which would you recommend to a Linux beginner? I know it's an age old question, but I'm having trouble deciding on which to choose!
Mandrake for the lesser experienced, it guides your hand more.
For a bit of advice, all I can suggest is read lots of documentation, and google becomes your new best friend.
Thanx for that. Google is already becoming a good friend! I have to admit that the idea of partitioning my HD is starting to scare me somewhat!
HEHE, google is a very close friend of mine, if it aitn on google, its either too old, or it dont exist. :D
Not used redhat but have used suse and mandrake and I like Mandrake 9

Mandrake is a damn fine distro, an done of the best choices for a newcomer to Linux as it includes lots of GUI tools for configs, whereas many other distros have to be configured partly in terminal mode. I'd be using Mandrake on my desktop myself if it wasn't for the fact they don't support my Highpoint RAID chip - bah! I've just installed MDK9 on a mates PC, and she loves it.
I prefer RedHat for server apps though, although I'm itching to give Debian a whirl.
Thanx for the feedback. Think I'm gonna go for Mandrake. Now I've just got to get the Shuttle to run it on!

I'm going for Mandrake too, but I'm not sure whether i need to change half the hardware on my PC though,
Anyone know if there's some way of checking my hardware compatability with Mandrake before I install it?

Get yourself a copy o' 'Partition Magic 8.0' , and your worries will be over :D
Dark Angel - check this link out.

Linux doesn't support winmodems.
Creepy, yeah I might resort to PM8 in the end! Still haven't got the Shuttle yet - taking a while thinking about the hardware as I don't want to end up making an expensive mistake! Next job is to format my brother's HD. (First time I've done that :D)

Thanks SjH, I've been looking for something like that...
(/me notices that most of my hardware isn't listed there... :( )
No problem! Bad luck with the hardware.
