View Full Version : DVD to DivX
I have been playing around with this DVD to DivX software, trying to carve those 7Gb DVDs down to 1Gb.
Wondering if other people have done this. I have carved Minority Report down to about 1Gb. Ideally, I want it down to fit onto a CD-R. The quality is near DVD quality.
I currently have 20 movies on my 80Gb hard drive.
BTW, what kinda file sizes do you guys get when downloading DivX movies?

I look for around 600Mb+ files however if its a long film look for ones that are splint in 2 with both around 600Mb+
You should have Minority report on 2CDs rather then one (its rather a long film)
Ive got about 90 films over 2 40Gb hard drives (all backups of cource)

I've tried to get DVD to Divx only a few times! the fact that it takes nearly 8 to 10 hours to encode a film is just to long for me :) lol!!
But you should try to split all movies over 2 CD's that usualy gives the best quality for size ratio!! the biggest part of any movie is the Audio part! that's what usually hoggs all the file size!!
Try lowering the audio bitrate by a notch or 2 you won't notice the diffrence unless you got a GOOD speaker and amp system.
I usually go for good images and slightly lower audio quality. With my speaker system the 5:1 digital sound is wasted so why waste time with great audio when good sound quality will do me just fine! it's only a backup ain't it :)

there is a few progs about that you could use!
my personal fave is "FairUse" it's a video only DVD to Divx convertor that's easy to use, you'll need to get a separate audio converter.
check out DVD.box.sk (http://dvd.box.sk) it's got a good list of software and guides for DVD to VCD,SVCD, Divx.

By 'ech inder, you're gorgeous!
Oh, thanks for the tips guys too. :D
8-10 hours for encoding minority report on my Notebook - which is a PIII UltraLowVoltage 933Mhz.
Haven't yet encoded using my 2.4 PIV, but pretty sure it will be a lot quicker.
I used GordianKnot, which is available from www.digital-digest.com - good site
In my opinion Gordian Knot is the best software for converting dvd to divx.
Its very easy to use and you can encode using divx 5.
Encoding usually takes 3-4 hours for a film
All you do is split the avi and burn it to 2 discs of course all the options in relation to file size is controlled in the program
Worth checking out

I use Dvd2Avi and VirtualDub together.
Works on everything,
Supports every codec known to man,
Gets best results.

Is an excellent program......for DVD ripping......
Whilst Divx offers excellent compression and quality the vast majority of DVD Players today won't play it.
I suggest trying the freeware DVD-2-SVCD which automates the processes using other programs, it re-encodes the video, audio, puts it back together, splices it, and ends up with however many ISO files, which you can just burn using Nero.
Its excellent and easily dvd quality if done correctly. Takes around 5-6 hours to do a average film on my XP1800+,512mb,KT266A PC, which isn't too bad all things considered.
