While trying to connect my daughter's pc to her university's wired network, we came up against the following problem:

On the Authentication tab in Local Area Connection Properties we were meant to check the settings for 'Authenticate as computer when computer info is available' and 'Authenticate as guest when user or computer info is unavailable' but these do not appear on the Authentication tab on her pc.

I guess there is a setting elsewhere that would make these appear, but we just don't know where. She has XP Home service pack 3 (or maybe 2) and the pc had been connected via cable to our router at home. It does not have a wireless network card.

She has not had time to sort it out with the IT dept yet, so I was wondering if anyone could point us in the right direction.

first guess - probably down to being xp home, its more limited when it comes to networking options

Hmm, I don't think that any self-respecting University IT team would be able to expect/demand XP Pro from every new student.

Those options are related specifically to 802.1x port authentication (a switch-port technology, usually) so make sure that the check box above the options you mentioned, "Enable IEEE 802.1x...", and also make sure that the EAP Type in the drop-down is set to PEAP (change it if instructed to do so, or if it doesn't work first-time round.)

If there's no authentication tab at all, or it's empty, then that's not something I've come across before!

The op is connecting into the uni network giving access to a central server etc. So from my perspective and my experiences during uni it is entirely possible they need xp pro still.

I just checked and the requirement simply says XP service pack 2.

He's connecting his daughter's machine to the campus network, presumably from halls. They cannot expect every user-owned PC to be running XP Pro. The mere idea is laughable!

You're also not talking with any prior experience/knowledge, as a simple web search shows that there has been 802.1x support in XP Home (http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/20464/windows-xp-to-support-8021x-wireless-network-standard.html) and Pro, since the early betas...

At my uni we were required to have xp pro and if we didn't have it we could get it free or for a few quid.

Right, they expect everyone with XP Home (almost everyone that purchased an OEM machine - i.e. a lot) to reformat with XP Pro?

Pull the other one, it's bull.

Think about it: how many students bring Macs? How many run Linux? They cannot demand XP Pro. The IS team here are pathetic, and they wouldn't pull a stunt like this. They'd be lynched if they tried!

That was the situation while I was at uni, xp was still new (it had only been out literally a year if that) and as such a lot of people were still using ME.

Linux and mac os is different os and as such isn't relevant at the moment.

ANyways we've gone off topic - we'll see what the op comes back with.

This is now sorted out. Don't ask me how. My daughter got a lad who lives in her block to carry the pc over to the IT dept and they fixed it there.

Thanks
