View Full Version : ADSL Max Training Period :(

Right, I'm getting annoyed now.

Moved into our new place a couple of weeks ago, and after messing round trying to get the new phone number recognised, we finally placed an order for O2's Home Access Package (non-LLU ADSL MAX). When the line activated, it came up at 576KBps download speed which worried me as we're only 1.8km from the exchange. So I used the test socket, and there was no change. The line stats were excellent (no errors, 30dB downstream attenuation, 30dB downstream noise margin) and online calculators suggested I should be getting at least 6Mbps.

I spoke to O2 (who I have to say have been pretty good at answering technical queries up to this point), but their hands are tied during the initial 10 day training period as it's exclusively a BT process. They advised me to wait until the 10 days were up (this coming Thursday), but everything I've read tells me that the sync rate should have changed at least once, when it actually hasn't budged at all.

I've been careful not to reboot my router too often in case it sees that as a line fault, so I've only forced a resync three or four times in the last week. Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm just concerned that I'm going to be stuck on 576Kbps for the next few months whilst BT and O2 blame each other.

The only thing I can think of is that I've got a stuck BRAS profile, but that doesn't seem to exactly match my problem as stuck BRASers (fnarrr) tend to be stuck at their pre ADSL MAX 2Mbps.

Please help!

Wait ten days and then worry. These guys supply broadband for a living, they do have half an idea of what they're doing.

If it's still low after ten days and a router re-boot or two, THEN start panicking.

Hmmm, I know you're probably right. But everything seems to suggest that my router should have been talking to RAMBO et al over the last week negotiating different speeds all the time, instead of sitting on the safest most ridiculous SNRs.

Besides, they SHOULD know what they're doing, but they already c*cked up my router install as it won't connect automatically, and insists on trying to form an ADSL2+ connection until you dial in and force it back to ADSL.

As soon as the training's up and sorted, I'm going back to Netgear.

I am in similar position as you with sky (granted with better speeds), I signed up for their ADSL2 Max 16Mb package and they told me it could take up to a month to end up synching at the max obtainable speed. When I first fired it up I was on 2.5Mb then later that day it resynched at 4.5Mb, I have some faith in them that they will get it sorted, but I will start panicing if it doesn't get faster after a month (only last Thursday activation). I did see it resynch a couple of time over the weekend there.
