Thought I'd share this around as it's quite interesting and could shape the future of browsers for years to come.

Google is about to release their first browser named 'Chrome'. It's expected to be fast, functional and future-proofed, and although only it will be released later today as a beta, it's already gone through some heavy testing on thousands and thousands of websites.

I for one will be downloading it and having a play :)

FYI it's based on Webkit and has a new Javascript engine inside with some funky tabular action and memory controls.

The link was : http://gears.google.com/chrome/?hl=en

Doesn't work for me in either vista x64 from both opera and ie7, maybe they don't actually want us to use it as its not as good as either of those

EDIT: got it to work and it covers the start bar meaning I actually have to press the windows key. Suppose it is a beta after all.

I'm in Vista x64 right now and haven't had any of those problems.... So far, so good for me.

It definitely has an IE7ish look about it.

Another way for Google to get more of our personal information. I will not be using it.

actually think its slower than opera 9.5 and its supposedly meant to be the fastest out there

Atleast my site works although the 'lyteshow' effects are a tad slow and juddery compared with everything else.

I'll stick with opera for the time being.

Remember it is a beta guys. Still havent tried it but someone on the radio this morning was saying that Google have spent most of their time making sure sites look right in it first. Speed and that should come later.

I`ll stick with FF for now though :D

Well my middle click doesn't work for scrolling up or down and I can't use those text buttons on Facebook, like "Join Group".

Having said that though, when it comes out of beta I may well use it.

Playing with it now. Will try using it exclusively for a week or so and see how I get on I suppose.

I've never got on with FF except when I've absolutely had to, but I've found so far that Chrome 'feels' better. We shall see :)

Think i'll try and compile the source code for my Ubuntu...
People have said the compiled source works better than running in WINE .:D

I am liking it but the EULA kind of worries me a bit. That was the reason I dont use GMAIL

[GPO]Solitaire
03-09-2008, 16:36
Well got it to start. but it won't connect to the internet using WINE :(

The Source code won't compile to a browser, just to testing modules :(

Quite annoying - when displaying the url of a link moused over at the bottom, it only shows it half the page long, which means some urls fall off then end. Highly annoying for checking links and url tracking on client's websites.

Woo!!
Got it to run in WINE using the following commands:

wine "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/windows/profiles/$USER/Local Settings/Application Data/Google/Chrome/Application/chrome.exe" --new-http --in-process-plugins

But it's SLOOOOOW!!!
Very Very Slow!
but ok for a BETA :D

That fine print issue has now been resolved... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7597699.stm

I've been using Chrome for the past 2 days now and I can safely say its fantastic. A few niggly things here and there such as it not being too fond of facebook...

It's great though :D

Going OT a bit here, but on the subject of 'new' browsers... has anyone tried Beta 2 of IE 8?

I read this short article (http://techtalk.pcpitstop.com/2008/09/02/ie-8-rains-on-firefox-parade/) earlier this morning, which mentions 10 of its new/updated features, and some of them sound quite promising?
I even sat through [the whole of] this 20min launch video (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/launch-videos.aspx), which explains many of them in some detail.

I know I shouldn't be admitting this (and some of them may be in Chrome as well?), but... I'm quite impressed

Unfortunately however, I can't try them for myself, because IE 8 crashes immediately after it opens on my new laptop

I think IE7 is a good browser as it is. It has a very nice interface, low memory usage, feels fast etc.

True but GMAIL is supposed to be prett immense now and most of their other products are pretty useful now .

Initial launch beta is always a bit sketchy but they get better

it loads some sites faster, but a lot much slower. i cant be arsed waiting for addons to be released that organise favourites like IE on a side box, im to used to that system to ever change. if it loads sites 1% faster i will never notice it and it will never give me any benefit.
back to IE8 beta 2.

im not bashing it, its just not for meh.
