Im using a normal dial up conection via a analogue modem.

Im just wondering if all modems are basically the same and go the same speed or is there one thats speeds things up on the internet? If so whats it called?
Or is there a downloadable program / utility that we can download that will speed things up?
Of course broadbands the way 2 go but i only have a normal dial up conection.
Its just im a little bit frustrated surfing the net - its far to slow!!!

I NEED SOME SPEED!!!

Analogue modem?

If so, afaik no, unless your line quality is affecting speed.

They are, so unless you upgrade to a broadband connection, there's nothing you can do really.

well to be honest you're not going to really speed up dial up, there are some packages which supposedly speed up sites by going via a proxy and giving compressed images etc - not worth the money in my view.

You could try getting something like opera/firefox and tweaking it but still doubt it would help, the other option is use a browser which can disable images till you click on them.

You might even be quicker buying a 3G modem from 3 or vodafone and using that as your internet! Might even work out cheaper-and you won't hold up the phone line...

Jesus, don't say that.. I'd prefer my 56K at times. :(

I've used an Orange one in a Dell laptop, and I've been pretty impressed. But I have to say it was in the centre of Edinburgh, so it had quite a good signal strength (3.6mbps IIRC).

My friends iPhone hits 6mbps in some areas. I think most of us would envy that for our broadband connection.

And in Japan they're rolling out 4G. I heard Google is hosted off some Japanese kids phone.

Ok thanx for ur replies, was worth asking I supose!

Speaking about the I-phone does anyone know how to "unlock" it so that we can use it on other "pay as ya go" net works? instead of being tied 2 o2?
Is it indeed actually legal to unlock the i-phone?

Go and google for quickpwn and follow the steps. To be honest, if you have struggled to reinstall Windows 98, I'd not really recommend you try and jailbreak and unlock an iphone.

Its not possible anymore since you have to sign the contract and hand over your credit details before leaving the store.

Also the iPhone will not work with Windows 98 :D

I own an iPhone and I certainly do NOT have a contract with O2, nor did I acquire it from either O2, CPW or Apple.

The throughput isn't a problem (in the right area) but the latency of the services is absolutely shocking. 500ms+, and I fancy most of that is due to the DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) that the carriers utilise. Want a JPEG? Oh it's only been converted to a smaller file for you. On a 1Mbit connection, I'd rather they didn't do it.. Sadly, both T-Mobile and Vodafone do this.

Not to mention if you don't live in the centre of a city (currently I'm struggling to obtain 1Mbit here in Bournville) there really are none of the perks.

And they seem to think 12-24month contracts are acceptable!

Yes, the long contracts certainly are annoying, 12 months used to be the norm, now its at least 18 months unless you pay a premium :(
