One user "accidentally" spent $999 on a picture of a shone red gem stone on his iPhone..

An American man has accidentally spent $999.99 on an iPhone app that does nothing but display a glowing red ruby.

Dubbed "I Am Rich," the app is meant as a status symbol for the wealthy (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/08/06/iphone_pointless/). But in reality, it's a scarlet letter for the gullible.

As reported by our friends at Valleywag (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/04/01/april_fools_2008/), a Jesus Phone user known only as Lee5279xx spilled $1,000 on some red pixels because he was addled enough to think Steve Jobs has a sense of humor.

"I saw this app with a few friends and we jokingly click 'buy,' thinking it was a joke, to see what would happen," he says, recalling his ill-fated encounter with the Apple iTunes App Store.

What happened was that when he clicked "buy," iTunes assumed he was interested in buying. "I forgot my wife had 'iclick' activated on my laptop, and it really bought this app for $999."

As Valleywag points out, there is no iclick. He probably means the iTunes one-click feature that lets Apple addicts buy stuff without facing an "Are you sure you want to buy this?" message.

Lee5279xx is peeved. But he doesn't blame himself. He blames Apple. "THIS IS NO JOKE," he says. "DO NOT BUY THIS APP AND APPLE PLEASE REMOVE THIS FROM THE APP STORE...APPLE MUST MUST MUST START TO SCREEN THESE FAKE APPS AND RIDICULOUS SCAMS."

And it seems that Apple has responded.

Though it was available as late as yesterday morning UK time, "I Am Rich" has now disappeared from the App Store. Steve Jobs doesn't have a sense of humor. But he does take pity on the slow. ®

Goes to show you....
Stick a shiney button on your touch screen and some idiot's gonna push it... :D:D

The guy is a tool.
The writer of the App is a genius and a tool at the same time.
This is why I never use one-click purchasing on shops of any kind- it's asking for an accident like this.

And of course, as Apple fans know, Steve Jobs' sense of humour is not bluffing, which everyone discovered with the iPod Socks, the most silly and at the same time most awesome iPod accessory of them all, but were released on April Fools Day, and turned out to be genuine.

Hahahahaha, proof one click purchasing is a bad idea. Probably the reason the creator of this app wrote it.

The guy that created it is still waiting to get paid the $5,600 he's owed by apple! Nice to note apple get 30% of all sales to cover costs!!

I'd say if this guy gets his refund, it should come out of apple's pocket, since they're responsible for the app once it's on the store...
Apple have to approve the apps, so if they don't want to pay him- they shouldn't have approved this one!

I don't see why he should get a refund - the app clearly says that it does nothing

Depends on the small print in the one-click service... It's not a case of false advertising, the guy's trying to blag the refund under the pretence that he didn't realise one-click was switched on.

It is indeed his own stupid fault... The one-click service has a confirmation message, which you can choose to switch off, so it is possible to genuinely accidently click, but if you've switched off the confirmation message, you should know better- you will have definitely agreed to be charged without notice when you click the buy button.
I don't think he's got a leg to stand on either tbh.

I don't think he should get his money back. He clicked it to se what would happen? It says "Buy" what did he expect????
