Metal Gear Solid 4

What do people think? Do you need to play the previous 3 games to understand the story? I want to get MGS4 but haven't played any of the others...

I really want this game but I hear that you should play the previous ones to fully appreciate the story (which I intend to) so I wont be getting this for a while.

From what I've heard ( from Edge, so it must be true ) yes, playing the previous 3 is quite essential. This is basically a tieing up of the series and will be full of references and in-jokes from the other games...

You could sit with Wikipedia open, but really, go play the others, they are great ( well, I've only finished 1 and 2...haven't even had a shot of 3 yet...).

On the plus side, by the time you've played through the first 3, MGS4 will be reduced in price. Back of the net!

Can't believe there has been a few mags giving this 80% while most are giving it 99 or 100%, deffo dosen't deserve 80%, compared to what other games get higher marks. This game just seems completly polished in everyway.

The folk giving it 80% prolly haden't played all of the others or maybe didn't like some of them, cause its deffo worth more than 80%.

Just read one of the 80% reviews and what they seem to be getting at is that the cut scenes are too long, common! its a metal gear game the cut scenes are ment to be too long. The cut scenes are that well done that you want to sit through them.

I know 80% is still a great score for a game these days but it deservers a 90% at least.

Ive only ever played the 1st one (had demos of the others) it was one of the first games i completed by my self lol it was a brilliant game. I think i got help with some one fox rings a bell it was out in a snowy area. I might have to play 2 and 3 as well now lol. Even the special missions was good! It coming to pc??

Yea the game is brilliant I hav been playing it. I suppose you have to fan and played the previous games to get the most out of the game. But I think that even if you havent you can still appreciate the game. "Epic" is the right word for this game.

Definately deserves a 100. One of the defining features of metal gear is the cinematic cutscenes and they are brilliant in the game aswell. You can pause a cutscene or skip it anyway.

So far as I can tell it has been worth the wait.

its amazing completed it in the first 10 hours i got it and the online play is not to shabby either :) 10/10 on story and 10/10 on gameplay been worth the wait.

having played the first 3 games you realize speed and stealth = rewards :D

and in this new game the rewards are awesome :P

sadly my ps3 is broken =( "hard disk read error" so i've not had a chance to beat 10 hours yet which is gutting

Never heard of the hard drive failing on the PS3, that's bad! Had mine from day one and it's still going strong! I want to play the first 3, but eBay prices have shot up!

yeh its a real pain in the **** look on youtube I've tried everything for it tired to reformat it like it says online but i cant initializes the drive so thats useless, when you load it up it says "disk read error press x to reformat drive then when you do it, it restarts and asks you to do it again i might just cut ma losses and get a new drive since my mum is having trouble trying to get were she got it from to replace it.

Phone up Sony, they do a next day swap over plan if your PS3 fails. They'll take a few details, ask you to check a few things and you should have a new PS3 the next morning.

Its the only game worth buying a PS3 for and possibly the only decent game on said PS3....having said all that you REALLY need to have played the prior games to get all the story.

It is UTTERLY BLOODY GENIUS THOUGH
