Heard it is ok but very instance based and high spec needed to run it well. Apparently the combat is good as it's not just click and go, but the chat system is a little poor.

Still hooked on WoW here myself too :p

I did enjoy the combat....had to actually think about what you was doing and not just spam hit the keyboard.

sometimes i dont want to have to think to hard when playing a game, this games makes me think to hard, meaning i cant play it while sleepy or wasted.... also my pc struggles with it at high res, and i dont plan to upgrade my 7900GTO anytime soon.

I like this game so far, but there's a lot wrong with it.

First, the whole technical thing. The engine feels pretty terrible. In the city I get 10-15fps average with the 1900XT rig in my spec below. And that's on the lowest possible graphics (which look pretty poor by the way) and latest drivers. You'll notice this spec is well within the recommended specification in all but the GFX, which is above the minimum specification.

I don't have any idea what the graphics engine is doing, but I can look straight down at the floor in first-person mode, and my FPS won't increase one bit. Somehow rendering a floor comes at a price of 15fps. I think not. I don't know what it's doing, but it's doing it badly.

The heavy, heavy use of instancing is another thing that I'm not fond of. The game is barely an MMO at all. Many areas (and I'm talking proper, outside zones here) will have half a dozen instances. It's absurd. It is, of course, impossible to know which instance you will be dropped into (you have to manually switch instance from a button when you are in the zone). As far as I can tell, this is simply a massive shortcoming due to the zones being far too small.

When the inevitable comparison to World of Warcraft arises (and, oh, it will; this game almost feels like a graphically-enhanced carbon copy) the biggest difference is that WoW offers large, single-instance zones. And not only are they single-instance, but they are completely seamless. You can run from Silvermoon City to Booty Bay with no loading screens.

Conan? You even see loading screens when entering a tavern. It feels like a gigantic step back in online gaming and one done to make the developer's life far, far easier. It's a lot simpler to make a tavern if you just stick a door somewhere and then give another team the job of actually making it. It's horrible and breaks immersion.

So, yes. I suppose Conan does have "great" graphics (though darned if I can play with them), but it comes at the expense of real immersion. When something this convoluted, messy and uncomfortable turns up, it makes me realise why WoW, which is now polished to the extreme and runs as though it's slaked in butter, has 12 million subscribers.

I'll be playing to the end of my thirty days but doubt I'll be renewing my subscription. But, hey, if you're on the Aquiliona server before then and want to say hi, my nick is 'Zesh'. :)

Thx for a good review of the game Zozart. As you correctly pointed out that they will compare this to WoW and yes it's very well polished. It's a shame because this game showed promise but one would assume thats where the patching comes into play.
I'll be staying away from this mmo.

As for WoW servers you'll find me on Turalyon. Hordie = Trottersinc/Formaata.

It's not so much a review as it is a summation of the worse things I've found!

There is plenty of good to say about the game, however. The graphics (when all working well and good) are very nice. The bank and auction house has now been activated which will set the economy going. The quests (so far) don't seem quite as mind-numbing as WoW (we all know how painful it is farming 100 enemies for a freakin' quest drop) and the first 20-levels, with plentiful voice acting and a unique "single player" destiny quest line is really well done.

If there's ever a free trial I would recommend checking it out. It's likely that by the time there is a trial most of the kinks will have been ironed out too.

FUncom are playing a bit of a dangerous game alienating a huge chunk of the market by making it need a high end system but It is an adult game and I think they are aiming at the type of ppl who post on places like here who have ninja pc`s.

THey have supposed to have sold 700k in the first week so they have done something right :D

I am looking at getting it today I think

I play on Battlescar PvP server, lvl40 Conq.

Games ok, early days so afew bugs. Some classes are inbalanced, rangers are over powered and healer classes dnt seem to die.

Grahpics is impressive and so is the system requirments, 30Gig hhd space

Ps. I only got this to take a break from WoW

My nick is Dunpeal. Gimme a shout if you need a hand. I can assist you on most quests except White Sands as the lvl cap to enter that zone is 25.

The first zone (Tortage) like all mmos is a 'noob' zone, which has striaght forward quests. If you do get stuck, follow the advice given on quest log and also all objective(s) are marked out on map.

Word of advice, as your on a PvP server once you leave Tortage when you hit 19/20 you will enter the world of very annoying gankfest. You will get ganked in the world, at rez points and in towns as some NPCs dnt work.

But, if you love PvP (like me:p) than just focus on lvling until you can gank your self

The problem with the assasin is distance, I destroyed a lvl 35 assasin last night and i'm a lvl 30 Tempest of Set, stuck her miles away from me and by the time she was up close she was dead.

you go to the shops and spend £30 lol.
There is no free version as you're effectivly getting a single player game at the same time.

ISnt there a 7 day friend trial in the box?

It's a brilliant game. I have found Asda to be the cheapest place to buy it atm.

You pay £30 for the game and get a 30 day trial with it.

ArTizan

Doesn't it run like a dog though? i.e there's no point getting it unless you have a 1.5 grand beast?

kopite
04-06-2008, 16:25
Yeah but im sure there is a 7 day trial inside as well for inviting a friend.... I`ll check when i get home.

Well it runs fine on my computer although it is a quad core q6600 cpu with 4 gig ram. The graphics card is an x1900xtx though so its a bit on the old side.

Basically Funcom have decided that they want this game to be the best looking MMO on the market. Its an adult MMO aimed at Adults. The market I believe they have aimed at are ppl who post on places like here who keeop their pc up to date.

Cod Ball
04-06-2008, 16:27
hmm, there may be....I know there is a buddy program on the site but it says its not available yet.

Yeah its quite demanding but my machine cost me £800 about a year ago and it runs it fun =/

I've got a bit bored of this already. The instancing has just gone too far. I don't want to play an "MMO" which has about 10 instances of every zone. Dungeon instances I can understand and appreciate, but typical zones should never be instanced. Guild Wars gets away with it by not having a monthly fee!

And before anyone says "if there weren't any instances, the zones would be overrun and you'd never get to kill anything" - that's a terrible excuse. Fact is, they have designed all the zones with heavy instancing in mind. This lets them get away with much, much smaller zones which equals less content.

WoW has really set a standard here with the gigantic, single-instance zones in Outland. Even with the frenzied Burning Crusade launch day they didn't resort to splitting people up over instances; instead they employed clever solutions such as (the obvious) gigantic zones and (the less obvious) a mechanic where enemies spawn more frequently depending on how many people there are.

And the funny thing is? Playing AoC, I have still, on several occasions, found myself waiting 10+ minutes for a boss to spawn for a quest. The whole instance situation is a total mess as far as I'm concerned and I will certainly not be renewing my subscription.

Im enjoying it atm :D

Im playing as a dark templar and its great

Khan
04-06-2008, 23:43
Gotta love waiting for a Boss with another 10 people to get the kill, respawn time is nuts at like 15mins

AoC is really pretty to look at but thats about it tbh, I really thought in the long run it might (not over take WoW) be one of the most talked about mmo. I did enjoy the first week of game play but since than its kinda gone down hill for me.

Gone back to WoW :p

Khan

Ps. Might come back to AoC after some updates.
