A new movie trailer which fails to reveal the film's title is leaving U.S. cinema audiences desperate for more information. The strange promo, which is being shown across the country before screenings of America's number one film Transformers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0418279/), features a bunch of New Yorkers enjoying a dinner party before the lights go out and fireballs drop all over the city. The trailer contains no title, but reveals a release date of January 18, 2008 and that the movie is produced by Lost (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411008/) co-creator and Mission: Impossible III (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0317919/) director JJ Abrams (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0009190/). The film is known as Cloverfield (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1060277/), although Hollywood studio Paramount Pictures (http://www.imdb.com/company/co0023400/) insists that will not be the movie's title.
Got that from IMDB
I think it's a fantastic way of promoting it!

Interesting!

On another note, I like how Feisty's version of Totem now plays those Quicktime SD and HD vids without a fuss (still ends up stopping to buffer the damn 1080p stream every 5 seconds though, I blame UKO/Apple for that )

Shall have to keep an eye on this one anyway. Any ideas as to what it is? Godzilla 2?

And the FAQ now answers my original fear. It's not Godzilla.

Hopefully it'll be better than Godzilla was, though. And oh god, if it's not better than King Kong then they might as well stop now...

Cloverfield trailer is at the start of I Am Legend, and its a monster film based from the point of view of some people who were out partying or something....lots of wobbly camera moments....and America getting smashed muahaha.

I heard it was going to be based on the game Rampage, where you have a selection of monsters to destroy the city.

Haha now that would be awesome, think you'll see him pick people off the ground or out of their houses and eat them? Looks like it will be worth a watch but I don't think I will go out of my way to see it.

Some of my friends were talking about it today they said it was rubbish although I do think they miss the ability to understand the beauty of non-contemporary films like cloverfield, apocalypto, sleuth and so on. I desperately want to see it but my gf is reluctant have to use my pimpin hand to change her mind me thinks :D. What is the basic outline of the plot I heard it was a giant mutated whale woken up that then nails New York and everyone dies?

Saw this tonight. Visuals were absolutely awesome.

Camera guy was not awesome, and quite thoroughly annoying.

I'm such a geek though - see at the start ? It says 'SD DIGITAL' (like as in camera on-screen-display stuff) but then the film regularly references about stuff being 'taped over'.

Surely any camera with digital media creates new files every time you hit record?

Yes, I know, hang my head on shame. I'm nearly as bad as the people that turn up at conventions and pick out some ridiculous detail that happened 10 years ago and expect everyone else to care.

I saw it yesterday, I really enjoyed it. Was nice to see a different type of film for a change, I don't think the film would have been half as good if they hadn't used the 'handy cam' effect.
I didn't pick up on your point Graeme but now you mention it you're right. *Goes to check IMDB goofs*

EDIT: It's not there. ;)

One more to add to the list: I saw this last night, and I can whole-heartedly say that it was one of the most captivating films I've seen in a long time.

The genius was in the subtle ways they used the 'handycam' effect. Eg. Putting the camera down to do something, but in such a way that only let you see half of what was going on, thus allowing your imagination to fill in the rest.

But yeah, I liked it. Went with a film student too, and as critical as they usually are, she was really impressed too. :D

I should probably expand on my remark above - the camera footage was really well done and added a lot to it, making you feel you were really there.

My grievance was more with the guy himself - the way he questioned everything constantly and repeated himself was really irritating ! Naturally it will be deliberate though - giving the hosting character a more 'common' personality rather than some calculated action hero. Makes it easier to identify with the viewer I guess?

Funny during the trailers though : 'Awww man, they've made Robocop 4! How cool! '

It was 'Ironman'. Cue giggling in my direction. :)

If they do, I'll be severely upset. A sequel would ruin the otherwise extremely well-done ending.

The director wants to do a sequel, but set at the same time. On Brooklyn bridge, you briefly see another guy filming and they film each other. He likes the idea of having the two films meet at that point. In all the chaos that was going on, there could quite easily have been other people filming their story.

Cheers,
Stephen

exactly what i thought they'd do, have at least one shot where the cameras sort of overlap each other and it makes perfect sense for others to be filming in such a situation, just maybe not for the same reasons?
i mean personally i'd be running rather than filming, it's always the one who stays behind to film that gets nailed imo.

Cloverfield 2 - Sequel Plans (http://www.movie-moron.com/?p=126)? / Cloverfield 2 - Coming your way (http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Cloverfield-2-Coming-Your-Way-7531.html)?

But this one might see the complete undoing of Tom's normally calm nature: It's Official: 'Cloverfield 2' is Coming! (http://www.cinematical.com/2008/01/31/its-official-cloverfield-2-is-coming/)...

According to Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117979910.html?categoryid=13&cs=1&nid=2564), Matt Reeves (http://imdb.com/name/nm0716257/) is "in early talks with Paramount" to direct a sequel to this month's smash Cloverfield (http://imdb.com/title/tt1060277/).
This should come as a surprise to exactly no one, as Cloverfield was made on the super cheap ($25 million) and scored a whopping $46 million in its opening weekend alone.

From the way the announcement is worded, it looks like they want Cloverfield II underway ASAP, as soon as Paramount can complete discussions with Reeves, producer J.J. Abrams (http://imdb.com/name/nm0009190/) and writer Drew Goddard (http://imdb.com/name/nm1206844/), who penned Cloverfield as well as episodes of Lost, Alias, and Buffy, the Vampire Slayer.

*Raises arms above his head and screams*

No, seriously, I won't be too miffed if they do the 'alternate angle' sequel. Much like Opposing Force was to Half Life (hey, why stop at the 2nd cameraman? Why not a full-blown, gung-ho US Marine version?) it probably won't be too bad.

I would start the Zoidberg-style screaming if the sequel turned out to be a continuation of the original storyline. :p
