Hi All,

Its been a while since i was last here so i thought i would drop by and at the same time ask for some help.
I have recently fixed up a old laptop i was given (p4 2.4ghz) and i want to run linux on it. To begin with Fedora.
The Laptop has an internal 10/100 lan adapter but i want to go wireless, i have been looking at the usual people, belkin, buffalo, d-link, netgear and they all seam to only support micro$oft.

Could anybody recommend a decent usb wireless adaptor.
Cheers,
Chris

A quick google suggests that the belkin stuff can be used... http://opensource.bureau-cornavin.com/belkin/index.html all chipset dependant rather than manufacturer.

im assuming before i buy one i can check somewhere what the chipsets are that they use and see if linux is compatable.

stay away from anything based on the broadcom chipsets as they are crummy as hell under linux.

my compaq laptop has an inbuilt broadcom so i will keep that in mind. im using a advent laptop for my linux project and i just recieved this morning a Edimax which used a Realtel chip, and drivers came on it for debian, fedora, mandrake and suse.

You can do all the research you want, but it's best to Google the chipset used than the manufacturer/model name of the card.

From teh Intarwebs (Googled: Fedora Wireless Support):

* RT2561 (PCI and PCMCIA)
o Works reliably with Debian Etch and Ubuntu 6.06 and 6.10
o Works 'out-of-the-box' with Ubuntu Feisty 7.04
o Works reliably with openSUSE 10.2, but needs work from a SUSE expert on the ifup/down scripts
o Works reliably with Fedora Core 6 and Fedora 7
* RT2571 (USB)
o Works reliably with Debian Etch and Ubuntu 6.06, 6.10 and 7.04
o Works reliably with openSUSE 10.2, but needs work from a SUSE expert on the ifup/down scripts
o Works reliably with Fedora Core 6 and Fedora 7

And these are used in a variety of Belkin products - find one you like, and simple Google it's model with 'Fedora' on the end of the search. You should find some info.

Also, remember you can boot up the Fedora and/or Ubuntu live CDs to test these things before taking the plunge. :)
